The Church at work!He is not here! Words which many of us can possibly identify with in our own lives – perhaps when we have called to see a friend, or rung to hasten someone regarding something which they have promised to do for us, or even in my own work when I have called at hospital to visit someone, we have heard those words He is not here! Imagine the whole range of emotions which we may have all felt at times upon hearing those words in some of the foregoing circumstances or others which you can perhaps identify with better. Perhaps amongst other things you have felt disappointed, let down, frustrated, disheartened, angry or even sad. Now put yourself in the position of Mary Magdalene and the other Mary (not the mother of Jesus) as they arrived at the tomb on that first Easter morning full of grief and sorrow at the crucifixion and death of our Lord. Two women who had risen early in the morning, as the new day was dawning, approached the tomb with their own burdens and expectations only to be told by an angel of the Lord He is not here! We can only speculate regarding their feelings at that moment but I believe that some of the emotions already mentioned above may have been flowing through their veins and could well have swept over them and overwhelmed them in that moment of hearing. Ultimately they left that scene with great joy in their hearts, why, because the stone had been rolled back, not to let Jesus out of the tomb, but to let the women in to see for themselves. The stone was rolled back and they were able to discover for themselves the discarded grave-clothes, the empty tomb and the truth behind the words He is not here! A truth which means that same discovery by men and women in the 21st century turns sadness and disillusionment into great joy. A truth which will continue to change the lives of countless people in years to come as they discover for themselves the glorious truth of the resurrection of our Lord. And a truth which we need to claim in each of our hearts if we are to profess with confidence and integrity a faith in Christ, who died for each one of us and rose in glorious triumph over death and sin. This Easter, I want each one of us to reflect on our faith and as we do so I would encourage you to imagine that you are standing alongside Mary Magdalene and the other Mary as they heard the words He is not here! for the first time. Imagine that you are hearing those words for the first time and that you then enter the tomb and see the evidence for yourself and ringing in your ears are the words of the angel He is risen! The reaction of the women was quite simple go and tell. And as they did so their hearts were filled with great joy as they shared the news that The Lord had risen. For them it was a defining moment – a time when their faith took on a whole new dimension as their hearts were filled with the knowledge and truth of the Risen Lord. We also need to make that same discovery in our own lives, we need to share in the women’s sense of elation and great joy and then go and tell others about the discovery we have made, not as historical fact but as life-changing resurrection truth. May we all experience that truth in our hearts this Easter and may it be a time of joy and peace for each one of us.
