When the Pharisees saw Jesus keeping bad company, they had a fit, and lit into Jesus' followers. "What kind of example is this from your Teacher, acting cosy with crooks and riff-raff?"

On hearing this Jesus said “Who needs a doctor: the healthy or the sick? (Mt 9:12 NIV)

A very wise person once said to me “If you ever find the perfect Church, don’t join it as you will make it imperfect!” At first, I was puzzled by this, then offended and then enlightened. The enlightening thing about this statement is the fact all of us are far from perfect even though we might think of ourselves as “not too bad really”. Rick Warren in his book The Purpose Driven Life writes; Every Church could put out a sign like this ?

No perfect people need apply

This place is only for those who admit that they are sinners, need grace and want to grow

How would we feel if a sign like that was put outside our Church? I heard a comment levelled at a Church leader in an inner city Parish by a disgruntled parishioner of long-standing. Changes had taken place in the Church, people were being reached with the Gospel and were responding to the love of God, but the parishioner in anger said to the Rector “You have destroyed our beautiful Church with all of the scum you have brought into it”. Comments like this come from a place of pain and hurt that things have changed. But they also come from a place of misunderstanding regarding the mission of the Church on earth to reach the lost.

Jesus encountered this problem as well as he challenged the status quo and mixed with all kinds of people, because the Good News is for all kinds of people! We read in the gospel that he was eating a meal in Matthew’s house with friends and many tax collectors and sinners. Self-righteous Pharisees saw this happening and said “What kind of example is this from your Teacher, acting cosy with crooks and riff-raff”? (Mt 9: 11b The Message)

The Pharisees did not want their Holy huddle to be upset and blemished with scum. The comments of the Pharisees did not deter Jesus from bringing the Good News to all he met. As we continue the mission of Jesus in our Church, we need to be careful that we do not become like the Pharisees and make our Church into a lovely social club where good, decent people come to see and be seen.

But we do need to keep our focus on bringing the Good News to all people, in the knowledge that none of us are perfect, that the Church is a place for those who admit they are sinners, are in need of grace and need to grow.

SWANLINBAR GROUP NEWS

WWW.

WWW. What is it? An event for our young adults (18 and over) which will offer a time for Worship, Word and Witness (WWW!!) followed by tea/coffee and chat.
The next meeting of WWW. will take place on Saturday 31st March in Kilmore Cathedral Hall at 8pm. Shane Tucker, the Church of Ireland Youth Officer for the Republic of Ireland, will be speaking at this event. Shane is a fantastic communicator and I am looking forward to how God will use him to speak to us that evening. Geoff will be travelling up to Kilmore that evening, not as a young adult though, or even close to it!! But if you would like to come along then give Geoff a ring as there is little point in two or three cars making the same journey. Remember, Kilmore is only 40 minutes away from the Rectory, it is not the other side of the world!

Happy Tots

I am absolutely elated with the start that we have made with Happy Tots – four mothers and their tots are now coming along between 10 & 1130 each Tuesday morning in the Parish Hall, Ballyconnell. Through Happy Tots we are trying to both reach and support young mothers and their children so please, if you know of anyone in the community who would qualify, then encourage them to come along. Whilst Happy Tots is organised by the Church it is very much for the whole of the community.

Holy Week Bible Club

Bible Study         Holy Bible

It is hard to imagine that Holy Week is almost upon us! It scares me in a sense when I think of how quickly this year has passed so far and I am particularly anxious when I think about all the things that still have to be done in preparation for our Bible Club. As I explained in last month’s Newsletter, Music, Arts & Drama, in conjunction with Alliance Youth Works, will be running a Bible Club for 6-12 year olds in Tomregan Parish Hall, Ballyconnell – details as follows;
Where – Tomregan Parish Hall, Ballyconnell;

When – Mon 2nd April to Fri 6th April inclusive;
Times – 10am to 3pm Monday to Thursday and 3pm to 7pm on Friday;
Cost – £2/€3 per day, £8/€12 for the week with concessions for families;
Food – bring your own packed lunch.
This club is very much a joint venture between Derrylin Parish and Swanlinbar Group of Parishes, but is open to absolutely everyone who would like to bring their child along. Literature will be going to the schools in the local area, so please do not feel that your non-Church of Ireland neighbour is excluded from bringing their child to the club as it is for the whole community.
You will find a registration form enclosed with this Newsletter and it would be really very helpful if you could complete this prior to arrival with your child/children at the club – this is largely due to the limited access to suitable parking at the Parish Hall, and therefore the smoother we can make registration and drop off, the safer and better for everyone.
And if you are 14 or over and would like to be a part of the team who will run this club then please give Geoff a ring. We are seeking to train up the next generation of young people to pass on the faith. Passing on the faith is not just Geoff’s role, though he carries a larger responsibility than most in our community. Each one of us is called to share in this work and each one of us can contribute to this work, according to the gifts God has given us. By volunteering your name for this work this will not mean that you will be doing the Bible teaching with everyone else watching! But what it may mean is that you will be working with a group of 8-12 children, helping them to discuss something they have heard or do a little craft that relates to the teaching. I would say that most of us could do that, but having said that we do not want anyone to feel that they have to do this as that would be like trying to force a square peg into a round hole. Lastly, there is no need for a commitment from you for the whole week. So even if you could give us one day, it would help you in your development and help us as we seek to share the faith. Even if you are remotely interested, then please give Geoff a ring to have a more in depth chat about what is involved and be assured no pressure will be put on you. If you do end up being part of the club, you will have an absolute ball!!

Jar of Grace

Jar of Grace

I wrote in the last edition of our Newsletter;
According to Tearfund sources
More than 1.1 billion people worldwide lack access to safe water and 2.4 billion lack basic sanitation facilities. As a result 2.2 million children aged under five die from diarrhoeal diseases each year.
I hope that these statistics caused us to feel unsettled and moved us out of our comfort zones as we think on our own privileged position in the society we live in. I hope that they caused us to reflect on those who literally thirst each day due to lack of or stinking drinking water. I also hope that the living waters which Jesus gives us through faith, have flowed through our actions as we dropped coins into our Jars of Grace at each meal time in order that we can bring about a change to this dreadful state of affairs.
The proceeds from our Jars of Grace will be received at our Easter Day celebrations as we give thanks for the victory that is ours through Jesus’ death and resurrection.

Informal Praise

And our next informal praise service will be at 8pm on Sunday 8th April in St Paul’s, Kinawley. This will be an Easter Sunday celebration of the New Life which is possible through the wonderful resurrection of the Lord Jesus. I would love to see a packed church for what should be a very special time of giving thanks and praising God for the victory of the Cross. Please do not feel that by coming out for the Easter Day Communion you have done your bit and I’ll just sit at home and watch telly! Switch off the telly, get out of your chair, and come along to share in the celebration, something which we should be doing every day of our lives.

Mike Edwards

Mike Edwards will be sharing the Easter message with us that evening.

The next practice for our informal praise service will be at 7pm on Wednesday 28th March in St Peter’s Parish Church, Templeport.

Lenten Services

I would really ask people to make a huge effort to support these services as much as time permits, but do try to make them a priority in your calendar rather than an optional extra.

A pen picture of Revd Desmond McCreery

Desmond is going to be our Holy Week speaker and I thought that it might be useful to provide some background on him in preparation for his visit.
Born of Christian parents in Ballygawley, Desmond in a booklet written by himself and his wife Frances describes his childhood as happy. He boarded at the Royal School Dungannon and it was during that time that he strayed from the teaching of his parents. He writes of this time as follows; Secretly I had thrown overboard the teaching of my parents. As far as I was concerned the Church was irrelevant. I only went because the school authorities made it compulsory! How many of us can identify with words similar to these!! But tragedy was to strike in the life of the young Desmond. In his sixth form, his mother took ill and died after a very short illness at the age of 46. At his mother’s funeral he reflected as his mother’s remains were being lowered into an open grave as follows; I knew if my body had been in that coffin I certainly would never have been in the heavenly home she was now enjoying. Not one who considered himself to be a spiritual scaremonger in his later work as an evangelist, this episode never the less caused him to reflect on the question “Where will you spend eternity?” Tired of the battle going on within himself following his mother’s sudden death, Desmond prayed the prayer of a sinner looking for God’s forgiveness by simply using the words of a well known hymn
Take my life and let it be
Consecrated Lord to thee.
Desmond’s life was transformed as he writes; The days and weeks and months passed and I felt elated, as the truth and wonder of what had happened began to dawn upon the young life.
At 18 years of age Desmond felt that God was calling him to the Ordained Ministry. He trained for three years at Oakhill College, London and was ordained in 1962. He subsequently served in Parishes in the North of Ireland and retired from full-time Ordained Ministry in 2003.
I hope that this gives you something of a flavour of the life of our Holy Week speaker and an appetite for coming along to hear what God is going to say to us through Desmond.

New Parish Grouping

At a recent meeting of our Diocesan Council it was agreed that the grouping of Swanlinbar Group of Parishes and Kildallon Group of Parishes take place with immediate effect. This proposal now has to be presented to the Executive of the Representative Body in Dublin at their April meeting and assuming it is agreed at this level the new Parish Grouping will take place with effect of the date of that proposal being adopted.
One of the consequences of this new grouping is that Tomregan Parish and St Peter’s Parish will alternate services and you will notice from the worship rota that this will commence after Easter. This is not news to us, but I do recognise that it will be difficult for some of us to embrace this change readily. Please do move with us as we genuinely are seeking to move Forward! together throughout this process. As I have said since coming to this Group of Parishes I am totally committed to seeing our communities grow in confidence and faith. I remain convinced that under God, this development is a move in the right direction for all of us. Please do give me your support and lets keep on moving Forward! together.

Ballyconnell Central National School

I am delighted to announce that the Dept of Education and Science have responded very favourably to a Board of Management application for a grant under the New School Scheme – we have been awarded €460, 000!!!! There are still a few legalities to be tidied up but suffice to say that this is wonderful news for the School, the Parish and the community. The time scale for works is still unclear as we are very much in the early stages of the process and still coming to terms with the news! But we would hope to be looking at Autumn of 2008 for completion if all goes to plan. Please do pray for the Board of Management as they now handle this significant change in a way which will build not only the School community but also God’s kingdom.

Forward!

Forward Logo

Cast your mind back to the Slieve Russell Hotel on Sunday 12th June 2005. A remarkable thing happened that day – Forward! was launched at an extraordinary service in a function room in a secular Hotel. Some were sceptical about such an idea in the lead up to the day, but few were afterwards, having experienced a truly wonderful service with around 1200 other Church of Ireland folk. You couldn’t repeat that service, but the Forward! steering group have organised a similar day for 3pm on Sunday 20th May, again in the Slieve Russell Hotel. Guests on the day will include TV personality Paul Clarke and Marion Gibson, sister of our last Primate Robin Eames and an expert in her own right in the field of Trauma counselling. Make a note of this day in your diary and make it an absolute priority to be there. There will be no other services in our Group of Parishes that day.

Easter Vestries

It is almost that time of the year again when we have our Annual Easter Meeting of the General Vestry. This is an occasion when you can come along and have your say regarding the election of Wardens and Vestry Members. This annual meeting is not just for the current Select Vestry, but it is for those who have a genuine interest in the Church and specifically it’s financial affairs. The Select Vestry are constitutionally responsible for decision making in relation to three key areas; Fabric (buildings), Finance and Furnishings (building contents). This is an extremely important function within our Church and should not simply be left to someone else. Please do come along and support these public meetings and enjoy a bite of supper upon conclusion of the business!
The meetings are at 8pm in each of the locations:

Parish Venue Date
Tomregan Ballyconnell Minor Hall Tuesday 24th April
St Peter's Templeport Templeport Community Centre Wednesday 25th April
St Augustine's Swanlinbar Minor Hall Kinawley Thursday 26th April.
Please note the change of dates for the St Augustine's and St Peter's meetings

Now have a smile at one aspect of education in America

According to a news report, a certain school in Washington DC was recently faced with a unique problem. A number of 12 year old girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom at school. That was fine, but after they put on their lipstick they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints.
Every night the maintenance man would remove them and the next day the Girls would put them back. Several memos were pasted about this, without effect.
Finally the Principal decided that something had to be done. She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the maintenance man. She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the janitor who had to clean the mirrors every night.
To demonstrate how difficult it was to clean the mirrors, she asked the maintenance man to show the girls just how hard it was.
Under careful instructions, the man took out a long handled squeegee, solemnly dipped it in the nearest toilet bowl, and scrubbed the mirror. There was complete silence in the room. Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror. - There are teachers and then there are educators!

 Church of Ireland Cross  Prayer points for March and April  Church of Ireland Cross

Let us continue to listen to God in prayer and develop a daily routine of praying for the following on the day of the week indicated;

Monday: We continue to remember families affected by road deaths and that people would drive with more consideration for others ;
Tuesday: We pray for those families who have lost loved ones through lack of clean drinking water – approximately 210,000 children under five died since our last Newsletter ;
Wednesday: For our amalgamation with Kildallon Group of Parishes – for wise leadership to steer the ship through this change in the coming months ;
Thursday: For our Church in this area – that our vision of being Church would extend beyond bricks and mortar ;
Friday: For a fresh sense of how God desires we should reach those who are lost, both within and outside our Church;
Saturday: For Happy Tots – give thanks for the mums and tots already participating and pray that more would hear about the place of welcome and rest it is for those who come;
Sunday: For all who are troubled for whatever reason at this time – that God would set them free from darkness and oppression .
