Then he returned to Bethany with the twelve disciplesDo you have a favourite
place? Perhaps for you it is somewhere you went to as a child and
it has since held fond memories. Or perhaps it is simply somewhere
you like to go to think about things when the walls begin to close
in on you! From my reading of Scripture, Jesus’ had a favourite
place and that place was Bethany. It was somewhere he went to at the
beginning of the week leading up to his crucifixion – So Jesus
came to Jerusalem and went into the Temple. After looking around carefully
at everything, he left because it was late in the afternoon. Then
he returned to Bethany with the twelve disciples ( Mk 11: 11). It
was somewhere he went to throughout that week, and at other times
in his earthly ministry. But what was so special about Bethany? Well
to understand that we would need to really examine what he did there
and who he did it with. First, Bethany was where his friend Lazarus
came from. Second, Bethany was a place where it was recorded that
Jesus ate at the home of Simon the Leper. And last, at Bethany, Jesus
was honoured by the woman who poured expensive perfume over his head
from an alabaster jar. In short, Jesus experienced friendship, hospitality
and blessing at Bethany. He went there on a number of occasions because
it was somewhere he could retreat to and experience rest and quiet.
It was a place where he could go and be among friends and not be concerned
about the demands of everyday life. |

+++ Recruitment of Homecare AssistantsSperrin Lakeland Trust is currently recruiting Homecare Assistants in the Kinawley area. Anyone interested who would like more information should contact Patricia Carlin on 028 6634 2404. +++ Mr & MrsI’m quite sure that the older members of our group will remember the quiz show Mr & Mrs with the question master Derek Batey. Well, we will be having our very own version of Mr & Mrs on Friday 8th September at 9pm in the Community Centre, Templeport. Our compere for the evening is no stranger to many of us, Archdeacon Andrew Forster from Elphin & Ardagh. The couples who will be showing how much, or indeed how little, they know about one another are Naomi & myself, Bishop Ken Clarke and Mrs Helen Clarke, Councillor Peter Mcvitty and Mrs Susan McVitty and Councillor Sean Smith and Mrs Anne Smith. This should prove to be a great night’s crack with music and drama on the theme of love and marriage as well as supper. I’ve enclosed a flyer with information regarding the evening for you to give to a friend or neighbour so that we might fill the hall on the night and all of the proceeds will be divided equally between group funds and Bawnboy Playground Fund. No tickets are available, simply come early and pay at the door (£7 / €10). +++
+++ Harvest services Our pattern of services for this year’s
Harvest Celebrations is as follows; +++ Congratulations! To two recently qualified Primary School teachers. Avril Graham (Kinawley) and Linda Kells (Templeport) have recently been successful in their respective studies through Stranmillis College and The Church of Ireland College of Education respectively. Linda has just been successful in her appointment to a full-time teaching position in Skerries National School, Co Dublin and will continue to study for her honours degree through Trinity College Dublin. Avril will be looking for a teaching position, something which is in short supply in the North of Ireland at the present. Very well done to both of you and every success girls in the future in your chosen careers. +++ Sunday clubGeorge Davison, myself and a small group have been planning a Sunday afternoon club for a number of months now and this will begin on Sunday 3rd September at 3.30 pm (finishing at 5 pm) in Derrylin Parish Hall. We intend to make this a monthly event on the first Sunday and it is open to all children in our group and beyond. It would be great if we could encourage children from neighbouring parishes to come along and be part of this new initiative. The afternoon should run along the same lines as the Pyramid Rock bible club ie some music, games, teaching, craft and singing – sounds so good I wish I was a child myself! If you would be interested in helping out at this club then please do contact me and we will find something for everyone to do. +++ Diocesan ReviewYou may have heard some horror stories about this and I would encourage you not to listen to the gossip and try not to be too alarmed. Change in our Diocese is inevitable, but the changes which have been proposed at this stage are only that, PROPOSALS! Please do not get entwined in the rumour mongering which will inevitably go on, but what you can do is pray for those who will make decisions regarding the best way forward for our Diocese. +++
+++ Friends of Tomregan ServiceAnd if you are a former Parishioner of Tomregan Parish, you will be interested to hear that we are hosting a Friends of Tomregan Service on Sunday 8th September 2006 at 4pm - Canon Reggie Twaddell will be the preacher at this service. Of course everyone is welcome to come along and catch up with people you grew up with and haven’t seen for years!! The service will be followed by refreshments in the Parish Hall. +++ New BirthWe are delighted to welcome a new member to the Parish of Templeport – Andrew Rhynn Hewson, the son of proud parents Ivan and Lorna, has weighed in at 9lbs 3oz!! Both Andrew and Lorna are doing really well and by now are back home in Ballinamore. We wish every blessing upon you all, not forgetting of course Andrew’s big sister Holly! +++ Street ReachGail Lovett and two other young people from Kilmore Diocese were involved in a Church of Ireland initiative called Street Reach. Street Reach seeks to reach people with the love of God in practical ways, people who perhaps have not been shown much love in their lives previously. Gail tells me that through her voluntary actions, many people asked her why she should want to help them and not get paid for doing so - what a wonderful opportunity to tell people about Jesus!! This is Gail's story...... On Tuesday 4th of July I travelled with two friends
to the Kings Hall in Belfast to take part in the 5 day Streetreach 2006.
The team we were with worked in the Beersbridge area. The work included
painting fences, making flower boxes, picking up street litter and cleaning
up a small river. We organised a fun day, a BBQ and a car wash. Each
night we went to meetings where we prayed and sang worship songs led
by a live band. Wouldn't it be great . . . . . ? +++
