Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid. (Mark 16: 8)
Picture the scene on that first Easter morning; two women arrive at the tomb to find the stone rolled away and the body of Jesus gone. Compound their amazement and surprise at this as an angel tells them Don’t be alarmed and you begin to understand the confusion and fear these first witnesses to the glorious resurrection of our Lord may have felt. They fully expected to be anointing the body of Jesus and were told He has risen! He is not here.
The Empty Tomb

But how do you process such a discovery? Because they had not experienced the resurrection for themselves their response was to run away from the tomb trembling and bewildered. This fear and trembling was to turn to joy as Mary Magdalene encountered the Risen Lord for herself and she reported to the disciples I have seen the Lord! Jn 20: 18.
Until we ourselves experience the resurrection power of The Lord Jesus in our lives, we too can be like Mary and Mary Magdalene, fearful and trembling at the sight of discarded grave clothes in an empty tomb. But as we comprehend the empty tomb as the fulfilment of God’s promise and experience the Risen Lord through the power of His Holy Spirit the word’s of that angel are no longer empty and devoid of any spiritual meaning. When we experience the resurrection power in our lives the words He is risen no longer fill us with fear and dread but rather call for a response from deep within our hearts as we say with faith, joy, boldness and certainty The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia!
Then, and only then, can we begin to go about God’s business of telling others about Jesus. May we each experience that resurrection power afresh this Easter.

A Poet’s reflection on The Jar of Grace

He hinted throughout the springtime then we heard it face to face,
Wednesday first of March is Lent, so prepare your Jar of Grace.
The Revd Geoff made out a sticker, and told us what to do,
So at every meal time, together we’d throw in a coin or two.
We thought of all the hungry mouths as we added to the jar,
Then said a silent prayer to God for hungry near and far.
This Jar of Grace shows God’s love for me, and how I can in return,
Drop a coin into the pot each day and pray for all forlorn.
We need not make distinction, with the Sterling or the Cent,
The money added to the pot will be money wisely spent.
Put a smile on many faces with funds from Ireland sent,
Thank God we’ve made a difference this Holy time of Lent.
It’s great to know God’s love for us and that it’s totally free,
Because on that cross where Jesus died, he thought of you and me.
So that is why I think today as I toss in a humble pound,
That with this simple Jar of Grace, a new life may be found.
I’m far from the richest in the land, but my jar is freely given,
Just like my Father did for me when he sent his Son from Heaven.

Fundraising in Tomregan Parish

The Parish is currently considering extensive work in the Rectory, Parish Hall and Parish Church. We have already begun some work to the room to the rear of the stage in the hall with the help of the community training and employment scheme FAS. We hope to have this room finished in the near future and it will be ideal for meetings of up to 30-40 people.
In the next year or so, we will be commencing other projects and more details of these will be made available when known.
All of this will come at a cost and therefore the Vestry have decided to begin a fundraising campaign and have opened two new bank accounts specifically for this purpose. Over the course of the next couple of years there will a whole range of activities to suit all interests, ranging from a Fashion Show this November to a Flower Festival in May/June 2007. Please do keep an eye out for notices regarding these activities and support them if you can as we seek to maintain the buildings which are a necessary part of the Church’s Mission in our community.

Diocesan trip to Brasor, Romania

Dawn Cassidy, a parishioner of Tomregan Parish, will be travelling to Brasor, Romania this summer along with other members of our United Diocese. Dawn and the rest of the team will be working with Poplars Church, an independent Church who have a strong commitment to the development of the health and education system in this area. The team will be spending two weeks (12th August to 26th August 2006) working with disadvantaged individuals with special needs in all age groups. This will not only be of benefit to those with special needs, but to their carers as they enjoy a period of much needed respite. It will not be a holiday as I would imagine that this will be both physically and emotionally challenging work. Of course the team will be well prepared and supported under the leadership of Mike Edwards, Diocesan Youth Officer for Elphin and Ardagh.
If you would like to support Dawn in this trip then either contact Dawn or myself or you could come along to a coffee morning and cake sale being held on Saturday 29th April 2006 in Carnagh House (situated on the Bawnboy / Ballyconnell road), the home of Ray and Rosaline Howden. All proceeds from this will be going towards the cost of the trip.
Watch this space for updates on Dawn’s preparation!

CE World Convention

Two young parishioners from St Paul’s, Kinawley will be travelling to the 25th World Christian Endeavour Convention between the 10th and 17th of July this summer. Helen Graham and Mark Crawford will be part of a team of twelve young people under 25, representing Northern Ireland at the convention in Godollo, Hungary. The Northern Irish team will be engaging with delegates from Germany, France, Australia and USA as they explore what it means to be United in Christ. The delegates will share and listen and through all of this learn from one another. The team from NI will be sharing their experience of diversity under the heading Challenge or Chance. I have little doubt that there will be much to share upon their return!

Group Mission

We were truly blessed through the ministry of Bishop Ken in our short mission in Tomregan and I have heard nothing but positive comments to confirm my own experience of the touch of the Holy Spirit. We prayed that God’s Spirit would work ……. and work He did!! I have been with folk who have been reduced to tears, such was the impact of the message each evening and perhaps most profoundly on Sunday morning. It is my intention to chat with everyone regarding their experience of the Mission, something which I have not been able to achieve as yet. But when I do call with you it would be wonderful to talk with you about the way in which God spoke to you through these services.
Do keep praying for changed hearts and a continuing work of God’s Holy Spirit in our Group

During our Mission Services Bishop Ken Clarke shared with us his experience of the Love of JESUS throughout his life in a profoundly personal way using words and music.

Group Confirmation Service

This will take place in Swanlinbar Parish Church at 4pm on Sunday 30th April 2006. Our six candidates are Julie Clements, Julie Graham, Janine Stubbs, Hannah Wilson, Gary Crawford and Jack Wilson. There are services in both Templeport at 10am and Tomregan Parish at 1130am that day. As I have said consistently, the service of confirmation in itself is not what is significant but rather the faith which is expressed by the candidate. Please do support our young people through your presence on the day and pray that they might make a bold statement of a faith in a Saviour who means everything to them.

Easter Vestries

It is almost that time of the year again when we have our Annual Easter Meeting of the General Vestry. This is an occasion when you can come along and have your say regarding the election of Wardens and Vestry Members. This annual meeting is not just for the current Select Vestry, but it is for those who have a genuine interest in the Church and specifically its financial affairs. The Select Vestry are constitutionally responsible for decision making in relation to three key areas; Fabric (buildings), Finance and Furnishings (building contents). This is an extremely important function within our Church and should not simply be left to someone else. Please do come along and support these public meetings and enjoy a bite of supper upon conclusion of the business!
All the meetings are at 8 pm in the locations below.

And what about some humour!

Three Not So Wise Men
Three blonde men are stranded on one side of a wide river, and don't know how to get across.
The first man prays to God to make him smart enough to figure out how to cross the river, so God turns him into a brown haired man and he swims across.
The second man prays to God to make him even smarter, so God turns him into dark-haired man and he builds a boat and rows across.
Then the third man prays to God to make him the smartest of all, so God turns him into a woman and he walks across the bridge.

Bee in cow’s ear
Farmer: “Did you hear about the bee that flew into the cow’s ear?”
Friend: “No, what happened to the bee that flew into the cow’s ear?”
Farmer: “It ended up in a pail of milk.”
Friend: “How did that happen?”
Farmer: “It flew in one ear and out the udder.”

Time to quit!
The woman already had 10 boys and was expecting another child.
Friend: “What will you call the new baby?”
Woman: “If it is a girl we will call her Adele.”
Friend: “And if it is a boy what will you call him?”
Woman: “If it is a boy, we will call it “A Day”.”

   Prayer points for April and May

Let us continue to listen to God in prayer and develop a daily routine of praying for the following on the day of the week indicated;

Monday: For those who will receive the fruits of our giving through the Jar of Grace – that God would richly bless those who receive and those who distribute;
Tuesday: For the continuing work of the Holy Spirit in our Group – that more folk would understand the relevance of the Cross in their lives this Easter time ;
Wednesday: For our various building projects – that we would understand that unless The Lord builds the house, the builders labour in vain ;
Thursday: For growth in our Home Groups – that they would feed each one of us and build us up in the faith ;
Friday: For all those in our Diocese with responsibility for leadership – that God would inspire and enthuse each leader, especially in vacant Groups ;
Saturday: For the Diocesan Review Team – that they would be guided by the Holy Spirit in this difficult task ;
Sunday: For the Church throughout the world – that it might seek justice and peace for the marginalised in society.
