But just as you excel in everything – in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us – see that you also excel in this grace of giving (1 Cor 8: 7 (NIV)).
I don’t know if you would agree with me, but the more I live and experience life, the more I have come to realise that there is nothing in this world for absolutely nothing! I’m sure you have received the phone calls, as I have, congratulating me on winning a Caribbean Holiday. Or the letters dropping through the letter box, almost weekly, advising me that I have won £250 000! Well I still haven’t been on a Caribbean Cruise and I’m still trying to make ends meet like most other folk!! You see with these amazing offers, there is usually a bottom line which involves entering a prize draw with 110 million other people and you usually have to ring a premium rate number which costs an absolute fortune. I conclude, therefore, that there is absolutely nothing in this world for absolutely nothing.
The apostle Paul would certainly not have agreed with this statement, and he would have been right not to! You see in his letter to the Romans (Rom 3: 23, 24), Paul speaks of the sin in each of our lives and the fact that we are made right in the sight of God freely by His grace. GRACE, something freely given, yet undeserved. When I stand in that place of grace I am truly amazed at God’s boundless love for a wretch like me. Every time I think of this gospel truth, I am humbled and amazed and I ask a very, very simple question; Why? The answer to this simple question has a profound impact upon how I live my life; Because I love you! That is God’s answer to each one of us who ask that question and when we truly hear that for the first time, we begin to understand GRACE; something freely given yet undeserved.
That is the grace which Paul speaks of when he encourages the Corinthian community to give with generous hearts, not counting the cost, but rather seeing the need of others. You see the Macedonian churches had given generously out of a situation of extreme poverty, because of God’s grace. Let this encourage each one of us in our giving this Lent as we contemplate the need of folk still suffering a great deal following the awful earthquake in Pakistan. I am conscious that as a church we have not responded to the plight of those affected, but now I am asking you to give generously to the work of Tearfund in the affected area.
In this Newsletter, you will find a self-adhesive label with the words “JAR OF GRACE” written on it. Beginning on the 1st of March, Ash Wednesday, I would ask you to stick this on a jam jar and place it in the centre of the table where you have most meals. Each time you sit to have a meal, I would ask you to place a coin in the jar and say a simple prayer for those who may go without a meal that day. Please do try and remember this each meal time, as a note shoved in to make amends for forgotten coins and prayers is not quite the same as regular giving and prayer. On Easter Sunday, we will collect in all of your offerings and give thanks for this grace in giving.
Each coin, no matter how small, can make a difference. Each prayer, no matter how small, can make a difference. Let us give together and pray together and together we can make a difference.
(The loose offering at each of the mid-week Lenten services, in our own Group of Parishes, will also be going to the work of Tearfund.)

Getting Closer, Growing Stronger, Moving Forward

That is the theme for our forthcoming mini-mission in Tomregan Parish Church. The whole theme of the Mission will be on our relationship with one another and our relationship with God. The Mission begins on Thursday evening, the 16th March with a united service with Derrylin folk in our Parish Church in Ballyconnell. Services continue the following evening, again in Ballyconnell at 8pm. And our series is concluded on Sunday morning, the 19th of March, as we come together in celebration in our group at 11am in Ballyconnell.
Bishop Ken Clarke will be the speaker on each occasion and we are delighted that he is able to join us over such an extended period. The Bishop will also be bringing along someone to share their testimony at each service. Please do make this a priority in your diary. We will be distributing more literature for distribution closer to the time, but do tell your friends and neighbours and bring them along to one of the services as we seek to extend the Lord’s Kingdom here on earth.

SWANLINBAR GROUP NEWS

MAD Craft Circle

This is a group who have regular gatherings around the Diocese and are coming to St Paul’s, Kinawley on Monday the 20th of February at 8 pm. In the course of the evening there will be demonstrations of things you could make with limited resources, recycling existing materials. This should be of particular interest to our Sunday School teachers and also anyone who just has a general interest in crafts. The whole evening is very informal and great fun.

ARROW Leadership Programme

Way back in December 2005, I applied for a course with the Church Pastoral Aid Society (CPAS). I am delighted to inform you that I have been accepted on this course, along with 2 other clergy from Northern Ireland. It begins on Saturday 18th March 2006 with a day in Warwick, (right in the middle of our Mission!) and will mean being away from the Group for 4 six-day residentials over the next eighteen months. Between these residentials I will be required to meet up with a number of my course peers twice for support and prayer. The demand on my time will amount to approx 3 hours per week. One of the first people I told about this course asked me if this meant that I would be leaving the Group. I was able to say without fear of contradiction that this course is not about moving on!! But this course is about developing leadership skills modelled on Jesus himself. Please support us prayerfully as we embark on this new chapter in ministry. Undoubtedly this will bring more challenges on my time as well as on family time, but with God’s help and your support, we hope and pray that our Group will be blessed through more effective leadership modelled on the Good Shepherd.

Bereavement

Our sincere sympathies are extended to Phyllis Cassidy and the whole family on the recent death of her father. Loss is never easy to deal with, but we pray that with the support of a loving family and kind friends, the family’s sense of loss will ease with time. Phyllis, may you, and the whole family circle, know the Lord’s loving presence at this difficult time.

Poet’s Corner

You never know what hidden talents there are in the country, but I was very pleasantly surprised to stumble upon a budding Poet Laureate in our midst just the other day. Their poem is entitled;

The Only Son

He was only a boy when his father died
On a lonely hillside farm.
His mother tried hard to carry on
With the willing help of her son.

And then one day when he came from school
His mother was very ill,
And as days passed by the doctor said
She would never work again.

As the weeks passed by he looked after his Mum
And then it turned into years.
He left his school for the lonely farm
And did the best that he could.

The years passed by, over twenty now
When one cold December morn,
He opened the door of his mother’s room
And she was to be no more.

And then one night when he went to bed
He decided to pray for a friend,
And since that night he’s been filled with joy
And he knows he’ll never walk alone again.

He still remembers his Mum and Dad
And the happy days at his school.
But he knows in his heart that the time will come
When he’ll be with his Dad and Mum, through God’s only Son.

Mothers’ Union Closing Service

This will take place in St Paul’s, Kinawley with a service of Holy Communion on Tuesday 21st March 2006 at 8 pm. Incidentally, if any of the ladies of the Group who are not already members of the Mothers’ Union would like to join MU then please contact Vi Breen (028/048 6774 8292) and she would be only too glad to welcome you into their membership.
I spoke at a Mothers’ Union meeting in Mohill on Wednesday 15th February and during the course of the evening became more aware of the significant work of this group of ladies. So many of us men, and perhaps ill-informed ladies, conceive of Mothers’ Union as a talking shop and a place where ladies talk about tray bake recipes and knitting. That is so far removed from the reality of the real work of Mothers’ Union. Undoubtedly there are times when there is a need for a cup of tea to be provided on the occasion of a funeral for example. And in a situation like this who do you turn to, The Mothers’ Union! Not because that is all that they do, but rather there is a recognisable group of ladies with a structure who can be mobilised very quickly to deal with the situation at hand. But what about the fact that Mothers’ Union are seeking to fund and engage a Development Worker to work across 6 Dioceses in Ireland, our own United Diocese being one of them. What about the work of the Mothers’ Union in African Nations where primary health care is delivered to those in particularly remote areas through a Mothers’ Union worker. What about the parenting courses being run in Ireland at the moment, seeking to develop better parenting skills and in doing so support the family unit at a time when traditional family values are being undermined and eroded. What about the giving of Mothers’ Union members through their Centenary Appeal, which enabled most generous grants to be made to folk preparing for ordination in God’s Church (on a personal note, whilst training for ordination, we received a number of these grants and very much appreciated the vision which was a catalyst for them and the generous hearts which made them possible).
I would encourage younger ladies in particular to read these words and contemplate them. Mothers’ Union is not something you progress into when you get your free bus pass!! It is something which brings ladies together, ladies who have a heart for upholding Christian Marriage and traditional family values. It is for ladies who have a heart for issues relating to social justice and inequality. And it is for all ages, no matter how young or how old.
Contact Vi Breen (028/048 6774 8292) if you would like to find out more about the work of Mothers’ Union or would like to become a member.

And what about some humour!

What about the three soldiers who had stayed out late and were trying to sneak past the guard without being noticed.
Guard: “Who goes there?”
The English soldier mewed like a cat and sneaked past without being noticed.
A few minutes later, the guard heard another noise and barked: “Who goes there?”
The Scottish soldier mewed like a cat and sneaked past without being noticed.
A few minutes later, the guard heard another noise and barked: “Who goes there?”
The Irish soldier replied: “It’s just another cat!!”

And then there was the bachelor in his fifties at the Parish dance who was bemoaning the fact that he hadn’t had a date in years. He said to his friend: “You know Joe, I now know how those wee chickens feel in the local supermarket late on Saturday night.” Joe’s friend was confused and replied: “What do you mean you feel like a chicken?” To which Joe replied: “Well I get a couple of squeezes from a few housewives, but no one ever takes me home!!”
