The Fog Has Lifted

Church of Ireland Cross

Hello everyone. Where is the time going? It is hard to believe that we are already in the month of April. It feels like the turn of the year was just last month. There has been a lot of sickness around and if you are one of those who are suffering I pray you will get better soon. Someone said to me recently “If you haven’t got your health you have nothing.” It is so true. Let’s be thankful to God for all of His blessings to us.
Hitachi digger at Swanlinbar rectory I am sure you have heard the phrase ‘What a difference a day makes.’ This came home to me just last week as a huge orange digger lumbered and creaked its way into the garden at the rectory. Within a few minutes the huge tree stumps that had nourished trees for over fifty or sixty years were uprooted and buried under five feet of clay. Already the garden looks completely different. Eventually it will be reseeded and new trees planted. Many thanks to all who have done this work and to everyone throughout the whole group who are working tirelessly, sometimes unnoticed and unappreciated, week after week.
Easter will soon be upon us and already there have been several Easter General Vestries. Thanks to all who have resumed or taken up new roles on the respective vestries. Can I encourage everyone to attend and participate in the forthcoming vestry elections. Can I also remind you to fill in the obligatory form of declaration. These can be obtained at the rear of the church or you can ask the secretary.
Hitachi digger at Swanlinbar rectory While out walking the dogs on top of a nearby hill I was amazed at how swiftly the fog would roll in and from having very good visibility I could hardly see ten feet in front of me. The speed at which the fog can come also played an important part in the Battle of Waterloo on June 18th, 1815. The Allies (British, Dutch, and Germans) under the command of Wellington were fighting the French under the command of Napoleon. The people of England depended on a system of semaphore signals (visual signals using flags) to find out how the battle was going. One of the signal stations was on the tower of Winchester Cathedral. Late in the day it flashed the signal: “W-E-L-L-I- N-G-T-O-N- - -D-E-F-E-A-T-E-D--.” Just at that moment one of the sudden English fog clouds made it impossible to read the message. The news of the defeat quickly spread throughout the city. The whole countryside was sad and gloomy when they heard the news that their country had lost the war. Suddenly the fog lifted, and the remainder of the message could be read. The message had four words, not two. The complete message was: “W-E-L-L-I-N-G-T-O-N- - -D-E-F-E-A-T-E-D- - -T-H-E- - -E-N-E-M-Y!” It took only a few minutes for the good news to spread. Sorrow was turned into joy, defeat was turned into victory!
Rev John     Rev John Woods
So it was when Jesus was laid in the tomb on the first Good Friday afternoon. Hope had died even in the hearts of Jesus’ most loyal friends. After the frightful crucifixion, the fog of disappointment and misunderstanding had crept in on the friends of Jesus. They had “read” only part of the divine message. “Christ defeated” was all that they knew. But then on the third day --- Easter Sunday---the fog of disappointment lifted, and the world received the complete message: “Christ defeated death!” Defeat was turned into victory, death was turned to life!
May I wish everyone a blessed Easter in the knowledge that we serve a risen Lord.

United ServiceSpecial United Service and Vote

There will be a special united service on Sunday May 4th at 11am in Templeport for the parishes of Swanlinbar, Templeport and Tomregan. At the end of the service we will elect 2 Parochial nominators and 2 supplementals. Regretfully in this triennial vote we do not get to choose a nominator and supplemental for each parish so a united service is the fairest way to get a good attendance to make this important decision. The parochial nominators are the first representatives the Bishop will look to in the event of a new appointment. This is to be considered both carefully and prayerfully.

Holy Week - Shadows to Light

This Holy week as every holy week we will be reflecting on why Christ had to die. You might well reply because of the evil in our world. We will consider evil through our week. Some of our visitors are travelling a distance – please make every effort to come to as much as you are able. Giving on Monday to Wednesday will be for the charities who visit us.
Monday 14th The Shadow of Poverty 8pm Tomregan Church
Our Sunday school sponsors a child through the charity Compassion. Others I know in our parishes sponsor other children through the India House of Peace and other projects. Pauline Beadle will introduce an evening where we see some of this work and be inspired.
Tuesday 15th The Shadow of Persecution 8pm Corrawallen.
How much do we prize our Christian faith? A speaker from the charity Open Doors will share about the persecution of Christians in other countries. What can we do? Come and be informed and humbled.
Wednesday 16th The Shadow of Injustice 8pm Kinawley (Please note change of venue from Swanlinbar as previously announced.)
Ruth Cooke from the charity International Justice Mission will be visiting. I.J.M. is a Christian human rights organisation that secures justice for victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression. Come to be challenged and changed.
Thursday 17th Kildallon 8pm Shadows at Passover.
In this service we will reflect on shadows at the meal, betrayal, denial and empty promises, followed by the aloneness of the garden.
Friday 18th Templeport 8pm Shadows at the Cross. A reflection on the Accusations and suffering, Jesus’ crucifixion and death.
Sunday 20th Gortalughany Viewpoint Kinawley 6am. The Light of Easter.
A community sunrise service at our usual hillside view point with our neighbours.

Latest News from Beryl Baker

Beryl Baker in the truck which was stolenWe have received news that Beryl’s truck, with a cargo of medical supplies and animal food, was stolen last month from outside her home. Julie Fagan writes, “If anyone is in need of proof of the power of prayer, they especially will be delighted to learn the following.
The Lancashire village of Ribchester has contributed, a church in Switzerland has contributed, the travel writer John Gimlette has offered to contribute, and the British Ambassador to Paraguay has expressed his support. No figures have been added, for the sake of the modesty of donors, but at present it is likely that Beryl has already enough for a perfectly serviceable used vehicle. We only know that Beryl is at present in the Chaco, incommunicado. We don’t know how she got there, either in a borrowed vehicle, or by bus. If the latter, then you can’t take much animal feed on a bus.! Rhett Butler the owner of the ranch has expressed his readiness to “sort it all out” when he returns, and may already have done so by now. It is worth stating that immediate needs are met, and the insurance company does not pay out before 30 days have elapsed from the date of theft.
Beryl in her clinic It’s therefore with great pleasure that we can report her pressing needs are satisfied, but it’s not too late to help her further. Above all, it’s a total vindication of the power of prayer. Thanks be to God!!!”
Beryl explained to us: The police have been helpful and Sylvia who helps with Project Paraguay arrived at the house last night with two bags of dog food and she has circulated many people in Paraguay and one of the English ladies is willing to take me back to the Chaco - it's the one who has the Rhodesian Ridgeback she also has two horses and has a share in a ranch way to the north in the Chaco.
I know the Lord is in control. People have put money in my bank account so I have been able to buy some food for myself and have the bus fare to go back down town to the Insurance office. The church office manager has been very helpful, too.

Our Support for Beryl
While we have not advertised a grace jar collection this year for Beryl, I am aware that there may be some folk who have filled a jar. If that’s you, please bring it on Easter day to churches where they will be received.
While Lent service collections have been for Beryl’s work, we are aware that this amount is less than we would like to give. We are therefore hoping to arrange two or three coffee morning /afternoon tea days to support Beryl’s work. These might be held in homes or church halls. If anyone would like to help with this please let Richard know.

Visit of All Ireland President
Some of the Swanlinbar Kildallon members enjoyed an evening with Mrs. Phyllis Grothier in the Cavan Crystal Hotel on Saturday 22nd March 2014. Joy Little DP extended a special welcome to Phyllis, a farmers’ wife and mother of five from Fenagh, Co-Carlow who has recently taken on the position of All-Ireland President of MU.
The evening commenced with a Power Point Presentation entitled "Growth and Discipleship." Phyllis then shared in a very interesting and inspiring way "the ingredients in her mixing bowl that makes up for life". She also spoke about the work of Mothers' Union here in Ireland and worldwide.
Following a beautiful supper we enjoyed a "Sing-along" of songs and hymns by the Belturbet Praise Group led by Mavis Magee on guitar. Some members of the Trustee Body together with the All-Ireland Chaplain of the MU – Dean Raymond Ferguson then entertained us with two very entertaining sketches. The evening concluded with Mrs Leila Beatty encouragin g everyone to participate in chair exercises followed by barn dances which were thoroughly enjoyed by all present. For photos of the event please visit the MU Diocesan Website at: www.mothersunion-kilmore.weebly.com

Talk on Photography by Jennifer RichardsonThe speaker at the March meeting of the MU which was held in Newtowngore Hall was Mrs Jennifer Richardson who gave a talk on photography. Members who had brought along their digital cameras were shown how to use them and the different settings explained. MU OUTING: This year the outing will be held on Saturday 10th May. The day will start with a coffee stop and shopping at the Linen Green Centre, Moygashel, Dungannon followed by a visit to Garden Show Ireland at Antrim Castle Gardens. The day will conclude with a meal in Corick House, Clogher. Anyone interested in going should give their name together with a €10 deposit to Linda Lovett as soon as possible.

FlowersChurch Flowers and Cleaning

Our churches look fantastic each Sunday and visitors comment on how well they are maintained. This work is not done by little green fairies, but by an army of cleaners and flower arrangers throughout the group. This number needs to be increased so as to alleviate the burden. If you would like to help in this valuable ministry can you please contact the respective organisers in each church, or Rev John.
If you are unable to help in this way you may be able to help with the financial burden of providing flowers, this usually amounts to about €30 for the month. In a previous church members would give money for flowers in a month that had special significance for them. Perhaps this was in memory of a loved one or a special event. Again you can contact the respective people in your parish, or Rev John.

Smile!

How about a Smile?

CowThe five-day cow

I long for a cow of modern make,
That milks five days for leisure's sake
that sleeps on Saturday, snores on Sunday,
And starts afresh again on Monday.
I wish for a herd that knows the way
To wash each other day by day
That never bothers to excite us
With chills, or fevers, or mastitis.
I sigh for a new and better breed
That takes less grooming and less feed,
That has the reason, wit and wisdom
To use the seat and flushing system
I pray each weekend, long and clear,
Less work to do from year to year
And cows that reach production Peak
All in a five day working week.
I look for officials by the mob
To guide the farmers at their job
And show these breeders how
To propagate a five-day cow.

Jelly Beans!

A bag full of Jelly Beans
colourful and sweet, is a prayer, a promise, is a special treat!

Jelly BeansOn Easter Sunday at a village church in England the children gave the congregation a bag of Jelly Beans with the prayer above on one side and the verse below on the other side.

Red is for the blood He gave
Yellow is for the sun so bright
Orange is for the edge of the night.
Black is for the sins we made
White is for the grace He gave
Purple is for His Sorrow
Pink is for our new tomorrow.
