Do You Love Me?

Church of Ireland Cross

Table QuizThe other evening I joined a number of parishioners in Newtowngore for the table quiz. If I’m truthful, quiz nights are not a great favourite of mine as I always feel I might be a bit embarrassed with wrong answers. Sure enough it didn’t let me down - I got the Bible question wrong!
Fortunately Carl was a kind question master who didn’t highlight such errors. I was also very fortunate to be at a table of folk who were pretty knowledgeable in the things that mattered here – like questions on TV culture, celebrities and government. I think we came third!
Years ago at secondary school I was in a school quiz team. It was good to be selected yet I remember feeling humiliated when I got a question wrong. I was asked something like: “What is the plural of bacteria?” The answer was something like bacterium. I answered germ! When my teacher tried to help me reminding me that it was the plural like in French (seriously my worst subject) I responded germs with a big accent on the s. The laughter and sense of humiliation was very real. Despite the wrong answer my team got to the final. They may even have won. I can’t remember – I went sick that day!
Questioning My house football team also got to the school final. I was in goal, you know that position where you don’t do a lot but you end up as either a hero or a villain. The thought of the latter was enough to make me miss that final too!
My teenage years are a painful reminder that we can miss out on so much because we fear what other people may think. So much of what we do is shaped by what other people think of us.
As we enter Lent we think about Christ’s journey to the cross for us. I thank God that he was single minded in following his Father’s will even though it was to cost him his life in agony on a cross. I thank God that Jesus was free enough in his identity not to be swayed by the demands of others. He rebutted the calls of those who tried to turn him back. He refused to simply be a crowd pleaser, healing everyone and providing miracles on tap. He refused to be used or put on a pedestal and be the king in the way many wanted.
Jesus stands out because he refused to have his life shaped by those around him. He was free to be the one his father had called him to be. Sometimes on life’s journey we can feel so inadequate because of what we don’t know. The Christian life’s journey is all about breaking free. Free to love God and one another as he longs. Free from the prison of fear about what others think even in the small things. Small things like getting answers wrong.
Quiz NightI suspect Jesus was rather good at quizzes! His heavenly Father knew everything. He may not have needed Google or Wikipedia on his phone to cheat! In every sense he is the one to go to with all our searching questions in life, not trivial general knowledge questions but the stuff that really matters, our hopes and dreams for this life and eternity.
I’m reminded that at the end of our lives Jesus is in one sense going to be our quiz master. He’s going to see us face to face and ask just one question that will reveal everything about us. It is a question that he asked of Peter after the resurrection. “Do you love me?”
Richard's signatureCaptain Richard Beadle
It is the only question that really matters. All our faults and failure fall down next to this. Everything falls into insignificance compared to this one question.

Lent is well known as a time for self examination. It’s a special time to examine our lives in the light of his love for us. Jesus gave up everything for us. Have you discovered that love? We can only love if we know we are loved. His love led to the most incredible journey that we might be free. This Lent I encourage you to journey with him.

Bishop Ferran GlenfieldDiocesan Meetings

You may have read in the Scribe that the Bishop is conducting a series of meetings to help explore the way forward for the diocese. He has already spent a time with the clergy and is now seeking to listen to lay representatives from parishes. Lay readers and parish readers have been invited and John and I have asked a representative from each parish to attend the lay day on March 22nd. At the request of the diocese we have chosen representatives that between them represent different ages and gender in the group.

Make A Mothers’ Day Campaign
Millions will not get cards or flowers this Mothering Sunday: mums, grannies and care-givers who despite the most difficult circumstances achieve amazing things. This Mothering Sunday why not support more struggling families by buying an ethical gift from Make a Mothers’ Day Catalogue. Help us to change the lives of people all over the world by buying a gift through a campaign which will help raise over £150,000 to fund vital projects in the UK and Ireland and around the world. A gift, however small, can make a real difference to a mother’s life. The catalogue includes ten gifts, ranging in price from €5 to €120, all of which go towards helping mums, parents or carers to overcome issues they face in everyday life. Rather than simply giving hand-outs, Mothers’ Union uses the gifts to give beneficiaries the opportunities they need to learn skills that will help them build a better life for generations to come.

How to Make A Mothers’ Day
View the Catalogue and choose your gift. You will be sent a Mothering Sunday card to give to your mother which has details of the gift you have bought, unless you request 'No Card'. Alternatively you can give a gift in memory of your mother, as a tribute to a life-time of caring. If you would like your mother’s name can be placed in our Remembrance book which will be kept at the Mary Sumner House Chapel.
This Campaign is not just confined to members, anyone and everyone who would like to buy something different is welcome to buy the ethical gifts. View the Make a Mothers’ day Catalogue, these are available from all MU Branch Leaders and may be at the back of many churches to collect. If unavailable please get in touch with any MU member.

Entry is open to Children from our two schools and any children who attend Sunday schools in the Swanlinbar Kildallon Group of Parishes.
We would like you to draw, make or paint a piece of artwork that fits into the title, "The Easter Story". It might be a picture of Jesus riding on a donkey on Palm Sunday, or perhaps Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane where he prayed. The picture might be about Jesus' arrest or death on a cross or wonderfully Jesus surprising everyone on Easter Day.
We hope to display the work at some of our Holy week services. Winners will be judged on Tuesday 15th April by the Big Red Bus team. Entries to your schools or your Sunday School leaders by Friday 11th April.

Cut Shaving or Cut Sermon?

Time watchingA man went into to church and saw that the vicar had cut his face.
What have you done to your face vicar?" he asked.
Razor and shaving brush“I was concentrating on composing my sermon and I cut my face when I was shaving”.
“You should have concentrated on your shaving and cut the sermon”, the man replied.

Dad holding daughter's handUnanswered Prayer
The preacher's 5 year-old daughter noticed that her father always paused and bowed his head for a moment before starting his sermon. One day, she asked him why. "Well, Honey," he began, proud that his daughter was so observant of his messages. "I'm asking the Lord to help me preach a good sermon."
"How come He doesn't answer you?" she asked.
