Growing Matters!

Church of Ireland Cross
After such a slow start to the spring, it’s great to see the growth all around the countryside recently. Here at the rectory the starling and swallow fledglings are out after weeks of feeding by busy parents. The cattle are in the field next door and the meadows have been mowed. There is good news and optimism shared. The grass is growing again and we can look forward to second cuts of fodder for winter.
In contrast we remain all too aware of the economic outlook and stalling of the economy continues to cause widespread concern and pain. Jobs are scarce and the financial cuts hurt.
Happy cowsI am reminded that in all walks of life growth really matters and as we look forwards at our own lives and think of faith it resembles in some ways life on the farm. There are growing seasons, times in our lives when we burst into new life. There are difficult seasons where we wonder if we will ever grow and times we question God and his plans for us. Yet grow we must.
I was thrilled recently reading a book that shared stories of Christians whose lives had been touched in a new way by God, as they realised how dependant their lives were on Him. Here are some moments of growth where God was clearly at work in the lives of individuals:
“I often found the church dry and remote. I believe in God as a being vaguely ‘out there’. I wanted to know him but didn’t really know that this was possible. When I prayed set prayers I felt I was talking into a vacuum. Now God’s Spirit has completely transformed my prayer life and given me a desire to pray. I want to know more about Him. I want Him to be the centre of my life; his will to be my will and his path for me to be the one I choose.
“I realised I had grown to love certain people whom I couldn’t stand before.”
“People began to mean even more to me. I saw then in a new light, the personal love of God for each one of them.”
“I felt a great desire to praise God”
Groe in Christ“Problems do not disappear but are seen in a different light; the light of God giving them meaning and transform and resolve them.”
“It was very much in the Lord’s time rather than my own... a seed planted earlier had begun to sprout... I wanted to read the scriptures because they were really interesting. A new purpose came into my life; that of serving the Lord.”
“We now know in a most extraordinary real way that Jesus Christ is alive. Before this we knew this in our heads, we had been told it; now we know it in our hearts and we believe it. We also know that God is our Father in the fullest and most complete way possible. We know that this is His world and everything in it.”
As I read these accounts, I am struck that God changes everything. The way we think about life is changed totally in his hands. The way we see the church, the way we view our neighbours, the way we view our purpose in our limited time. All can be changed by him.

As our parish group goes through a season of change. As we prepare for and welcome Rev John Woods and say farewell to Brendan, may we ask God that our faith would be helped to grow.
Please do make sure you keep the 6th and 8th of September free as John Wood is ordained in Kilmore on the Friday evening and then welcomed in our group on the Sunday afternoon.

Every Blessing in Christ

Brendan’s Farewell ServiceRev Brendan

A number of parishioners have asked about the arrangements for Brendan’s farewell. Brendan has been working with us since Easter 2010 and will be missed. Brendan has asked that his final Sunday service would take place on Sunday 18th August, marking the day with a united Communion service in Templeport at 11am. A letter will shortly be going to parishioners regarding the arrangements for this.
Brendan will be continuing to work in the diocese after he leaves us..

Bishop Feran Glenfield entering Kilmore CathedralWelcome Bishop Ferran!

June marked the arrival of our new Bishop. A number of parishioners took the opportunity to meet Bishop Ferran and his wife Jean when they opened the new See House to visitors. The new See HouseIt really is quite a stunning building that has been well thought through to be as practical and economical as possible. It has been financed with money from the sale of the old See House.

Many parishioners have said to me that they hope our new Bishop will be as approachable as our last Bishop was. While he will have different gifts to our former Bishop, I sense that many have been greatly encouraged having now met the man!

John Woods with Richard BeadleJune 16th marked the installation of Bishop Ferran as Bishop of Kilmore with a memorable service in Kilmore Cathedral.

Please do pray for Bishop Ferran and his wife Jean as they settle into their new home and get to know the diocese. May God give his wisdom as the Bishop seeks to lead this diocese in it’s life of mission and witness to Christ. Bishop Ferran with his wife Jean and Rev John Woods

Senior’s Tea Party
Mothers' Union Tea party Forty senior members attended the Tea Party in Kilmore Hall on Wednesday 12th June. The Service of Holy Communion was conducted by Dean Raymond Ferguson assisted by Rev. Sandra Lindsay. Dean Raymond gave an inspiring talk on the story of Noah and encouraged the senior members to consider prayer ministry as their sacrifice of giving. Mrs. Joy Little thanked everyone involved with organising the event, Dean Raymond, Rev. Sandra, the car drivers and the ladies from Kilmore for all their help. Joy spoke about MU events which had taken place during the past year and the success of the Mums in May Tea Parties and also how the proceeds are being distributed. Following the service everyone enjoyed the beautiful afternoon tea and the opportunity to renew friendships.

Bereavements
Cross

On behalf of all our group of parishes we would like to extend our sympathy to the family of Pearl Browne who was buried on 20th June. Pearl was well known to many here, married to the late George Browne. George served so faithfully alongside Rev Sue Patterson in the Kildallon and Arva parishes and later with Rev Geoff in our newly formed Parish group.
It is with sadness and with thanksgiving that we remember Olive Bartram (née Morrow) wife of the late Freddie, who died on 6th July in The Breffni Care Centre, in her 94th year. Very much missed by all the family circle.
We remember too John Gerty formerly of Killyran in Templeport Parish who died in England in May.

The pain of parting is very real and we bring both families before God, seeking his way, his strength and his hope.

Bereavement Prayer
Heavenly Father, give us faith and light in times of darkness. May our trusting in you help us live with questions unanswered. Grant us a certain hope in You, that will grow to surpass immeasurably the greatest depths of despair felt now. In you our Lord we put our trust.

Paraguay Update

Bishop with Claire and Gillian in ConcepcionBishop Ken with church members in ConcepciónIt’s good to be able to tell you that Bishop Ken has just returned from a visit to Paraguay. As part of his trip he was able to visit the church in Concepción where Richard was based on his trip to see Beryl Baker two years ago. Claire Holmes who led Richard’s trip in 2011 and spoke at our harvest service is now working with the local church there full time. The Bishop also managed to meet Beryl for a brief time following a church service though he didn’t manage to get to the Chaco this time around. May we give thanks to God for Bishop Ken’s ministry of encouragement in his new role with SAMS. Please also remember a team from this diocese led by Rev Alison Calvin going to Concepción in August. We hope to have an update from this visit in one of our harvest services.

Sunday School Prize-giving and the Big Red Bus

Operation Mobilisation Ireland logoSunday School Prize givingIt was great to have the team from Operation Mobilisation with us once again. Junior from Brazil brought a team of 4, all from America and later Colm from Dublin. The Big Red Bus visited 5 schools locally in Ballyconnell, Kildallon, Newtowgore and Killeshandra with a great programme of activities, games, bible stories and crafts. One principal’s report at a school we are not connected with commented, “the Red Bus team are superb – super job. Really well worth having.”
May I say a huge thank you to all who helped accommodate both the team and the bus. Thank you also to Neville Pratt for helping with a electrical job on the bus. Your help was much appreciated.
After the schools work, the team held an event on the Saturday in Tomregan hall. It was great to see some 27 children present and they had a great time.

On Sunday 23rd we held our Sunday school prize giving and the big Red Bus proved a great attraction with many of the children. Many thanks to all who came and supported the children on this special day. May I once again take this opportunity to publically thank the Sunday school leaders for their work throughout the year. It is a great commitment and a vital investment in the lives of our young children. Many thanks also to all who helped with catering on the day.

Valium"Everybody I meet is so irritating," a tense nervous patient complained to her doctor. He prescribed a tranquiliser and told her to come back in a week and tell him how she was feeling.
"Have you noticed any change in your mental attitude" he asked her on her next visit.
"None at all" she replied. " I feel just the same -- but I've noticed that other people are behaving a lot better!"

Getting on train in the snowA University professor was waiting in the bitter cold for a train to London when the supposedly non-stop Cornish Express astonishingly stopped at the station. The professor promptly got on board. He had one foot in the carriage when a railway official called out to him: "You can't get on here, sir. The train doesn't stop." That's all right," said the professor. "If it doesn't stop then I'm not on it."
