The World on Our Doorstep!
|
|
Well I hope you’re getting used to the Gardai and PSNI road checks at the moment. Our small part of the world is to be the centre of world attention as heads of state come to visit for the G8 Summit (17th - 18th June). It’s not every day that we have protesters from around the world, 2000 – 3000 media personnel, 10,000 security personnel, plus all the Ministers and personnel coming with the national leaders here on the Irish border.
I think for all of us, there’s a mixture of thoughts about this big event. For some it’s a great nuisance causing great work disruption and difficulty getting about. For a few there is joy at employment opportunities. Our local hotels are delighted with the bookings in the midst of a deep recession while Enniskillen has received a fair lick of paint!
Of course we have fears too. Whose going to pay the millions to host it? Some businesses may be affected, teenagers are in the middle of exams while the security threat is very real. Recent bomb alerts, real and hoax, have been painful reminders of dark days.
Perhaps the overwhelming sense is that we just want the summit to go peacefully and well, that a good impression of our fair land is left behind. Some economic benefit with a bit of sun thrown in would of course be welcome too, though it’s not a land of lakes for nothing!
Of course it’s not often that we have the issues of the world played out in our backyard. As we think about our concerns and needs it’s good to think about others too. What’s this G8 all about anyway?
G8 stands for the ‘Group of Eight’. Since 1975 this has been an annual summit of the Heads of State of 8 Nations. These nations are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, UK and USA. Originally established to overview global economic developments, it has extended itself to cover almost all of global affairs.
Between them, the 8 Heads of State, although only 14% of the world population:
Represent the majority of the UN Security Council
Represent about 51% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2011
Are the main donors to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.
Control 96% of the world’s nuclear weapons
2013 is the year of the United Kingdom’s presidency. David Cameron is therefore responsible for the agenda for the Summit. He aims to use the Presidency to “help generate growth, jobs and prosperity for the long term by focusing on open economies, open governments and open societies to support free trade, tackle tax evasion”.
All of the world’s eyes will be on Northern Ireland during the 17th - 18th June and as representatives of the Body of Christ in the land hosting the G8, we have a role to pray. These Heads of State each carry enormous responsibilities and huge pressures of the world, its difficulties and its problems on their shoulders.

|
Paul reminds us of that, it is on God’s heart for us to pray for leaders. Amazingly he said this in the days of power thirsty Roman emperors!
I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone— for kings, queens, presidents, prime ministers and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Saviour, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 1Timothy 2:1-4
Praying that the G8 will have a positive outcome in so many ways. Every blessing |

End of Vacancy Announcement
We are pleased to announce that Rev John Woods will be coming to us in September as Bishop's Curate to work alongside myself. John is married to Revd Stephanie who is Bishop's curate in the Drung Group. John has been working as a Deacon intern with Sligo Cathedral during the last year.
It will of course sadly mean that Revd Brendan will be leaving us. I want to say again how much we have appreciated his leadership through an important part of our 4 year vacancy.
Revd Brendan will be leaving us in August so we will have details regarding his farewell in the next newsletter. I hope to also have a lot more information regarding the new full time appointment. |
Important Service Changes
We have been advised to limit the number of services in our group on the 16th June to help everyone get to Kilmore Cathedral in good time for he enthronement of Bishop Glenfield. There will therefore be no services in Tomregan or Kildallon.
There is an open invitation to all parishioners to Kilmore Cathedral. Everyone is welcome to attend. The service is scheduled to start at 4.00 pm and it is important that everyone is seated (if possible!) before that time as the Cathedral door is closed before 4.00 pm to allow the Bishop to make the ‘Ceremonial Knock’ to seek permission to enter. Parking will also take a little time so please allow yourselves adequate time. |
Official Opening of the New See House
There is an open invitation to see the Bishop's new residence on Thursday, 13th June. Come along from 6.30-9pm to this open evening hosted by the diocese.

Early Giving A Help
It is difficult writing this at a time when many are feeling the pain of recession and farming worries, however it is important that parishioners are kept informed and able to help when they are able.
A common issue that nearly all our treasurers recognise is the juggle of money to pay the bills. Most of our giving comes at the end of the year while many bills come before! The biggest financial outlay each year is the assessment payable to the diocese. This pays for the staff in parishes and for the administrative work of the diocese and it's leadership.
Ideally this money would be due at the end of the year when all the giving is in, but sadly this is not the case and is due in instalments throughout the year. The diocese itself, is increasingly dependant on money payable on time. Regrettably it finds itself soon to charge interest on late payments from parishes.
To help your parish avoid any unnecessary payments please consider if you can give as early as possible in the year. I appreciate this may not be possible for everyone. If even a few parishioners are able to review the timing of their giving through the year it would be a huge help.

As we write we have learned that after several years of illness Wilson Crawford died in the Breffni Commnuity Centre. Wilson was a member of Templeport Parish all his life. Our sympathies are extended to his sister Marion and all his family and friends.
We were shocked and sorry to hear of the death of Charles Mitten, late of Gorteen, Derrylin, passed away on May 31. Dearly beloved son of the late John James and Edna Frances, and dear brother of Dora, Joan and the late Edna.
The pain of parting is very real and we bring both families before God, seeking his way, his strength and his hope.
Bereavement Prayer
Heavenly Father, give us faith and light in times of darkness. May our trusting in you help us live with questions unanswered. Grant us a certain hope in You, that will grow to surpass immeasurably the greatest depths of despair felt now. In you our Lord we put our trust.

Kildallon Vestry Update
At the recent Easter vestry a number of ideas were shared to help plan the coming year. These need not be confined to vestry! If any Kildallon folk want to join the following planning groups they are very welcome.

Quiz Night for January: David, Roy and Dessie
Songs of Praise and Gift day in March: Norman, Jim and William
Parishioners are also encouraged to begin to think about how they wish to celebrate Kildallon parish celebrating 300 years in 2016. How would we want this special year to be marked? It may seem a long way off but will be here all too soon! ?

MU Outing
Members joined with ladies from Derrylin Parish for their annual outing on 11th May. The first stop was to visit the garden of Mary and Kathleen McKeown, near Draperstown which had featured on the B.B.C. TV programme "Greenmount Gardens". Rev Andrew Quill's parents who had served in that parish were alsoto greet us and donations were given towards the local Parish Church for the lovely tea and refreshments served.
The next stop was the village of Gracehill, a settlement founded by the Moravians in 1765 where the layout of the buildings and the unique Georgian style of architecture remain very much the same. A guide explained that the Moravian village is built around a square with the Church remaining the central and focal point.
In the 18th century the village was highly structured, all the inhabitants belonging to the Church. The Moravians were renowned for their high standard of education and there were day and boarding schools for both boys and girls. The residents followed trades and crafts for the benefit of the settlement and in return were provided with a home and the essentials of life. The intention was that the settlement should be self-sufficient and support its local evangelical work. Worship still continues in the Church, the only Moravian Church in Northern Ireland and the motto of the Church is “In Essentials Unity, In Non-essentials Liberty and In All Other Things Charity”. After a few hours shopping in Ballymena the day concluded with a meal in the Viscount Restaurant, Dungannon.

Lugnaquilla Mountain Challenge
Last month we mentioned Alan Morton was planning to take part in the Barnardo’s Lugnaquilla challenge which involves trekking the highest peak in Leinster through the Wicklow Mountains. This sponsored walk is in support of the Barnardo’s charity that seeks to give practical and professional support to vulnerable families and children. The walk has been postponed and will now take place on June 29th. If anyone would like to support him it would be greatly appreciated. His phone number is 0833675243 (corrected from last month) .

Some Thoughts to Help Us Pray for the G8 Summit
There are huge Global Concerns at the backdrop to the summit. These include:
Poverty. According to UNICEF about 22,000 children die each day due to poverty. Pray for hope and that the poorest people would get a fair return for their labour so that they get out of the trap of poverty. Pray that exploitation would be exposed and not prosper
Human Rights and Human Trafficking. Pray for the recognition of the rights of individuals and for cooperation between authorities in different nations and that all people would be treated with humanity and equity
Natural Resources. Pray for responsible stewardship of the world’s natural resources, that the natural resources be utilized in a responsible, sustainable, fair and just way.
Global Terrorism. Those caught in acts of terrorism sometimes have genuine issues at heart. Pray for the grace to meet terrorism robustly but in a just way. Pray for co-operation across nations in working towards preventing acts of terrorism
Pray that as the G8 leaders meet there would be a spirit of Co-operation – that rather than seeking to gain advantage over each other that together they would work for the greater good.
Please also pray for summit and it’s local effect.
Especially pray for the security, safety and peace of the summit:
Pray that any protests being planned in Northern Ireland or other parts of the UK and Ireland will be peaceful and that people’s property and businesses would be protected.
Pray for Chief Constable Matt Baggott and the PSNI as they liaise with other security agencies to ensure the safety of the G8 leaders and local residents. |

Green Fingers in Ballyconnell Central
Thanks to the work of the Parents Association in creating vegetable patches for the children who are enjoying watching the fruits of their labour grow.
Tasty lunches await us in the future, with peas, beans, onions, potatoes, cabbages, lettuces and cauliflowers.
Ballyconnell school had their inspection report last month. It was very affirming of the school's hard work and can be found at www.education.ie then search for Ballyconnell central. Alternatively click here. |

Time for a Smile!
Memories! |

"Mum," asked her five year old son,
"What does 'married' mean?"
"Why, darling, it means mothers and fathers promise to love and honour each other all the rest of their lives." she answered.
"Then you and daddy aren't always married, are you?” he countered. D.M |

When I was a teacher of book keeping, I frequently lectured my students on the importance of keeping their personal accounts in order. “An overdrawn account without permission is inexcusable,” I often said. Many years later the inevitable happened, I received a letter from my bank to tell me that my account was overdrawn. Pencilled in lightly on the corner of the attached statement were the words: "Greetings teacher!" E.M. |
