Long Journeys

Church of Ireland Cross

Broken down car This last weekend we returned from what seemed an extraordinarily long journey. It wasn’t that we went especially far. The journey would only involve an hour on a plane, but unfortunately we really needed to take the car. The journey involved four hours down to Rosslare to get the ferry. Then we had another four hours on the boat. Arriving in South Wales we then had six or seven hours more driving to get to Kent. On a wet arctic morning we finally got to a chilly caravan overlooking the Thames Estuary. Only local bird watchers were seen out looking across the Thames for potentially rare birds lost in the storm!
Like us, a question probably comes to mind. Why were we doing this? It had better be worth it! Of course it was worth it. We had gone to see my family in Kent who lived a short trip from the caravan. Now unable to come to Ireland it was important we went and of great value, even if the journey home took even longer with a little car trouble!
Lost sheep savedOur journey made us think about the lengths people will go to for something of worth. Few would argue with the importance and value to seeing family. Travelling the length of a country or even across countries for a football match as many do today might be more questionable!
Our UCB Bible notes for today also pick up this theme of the great worth of a journey. It spoke about the lost sheep in Luke Chapter 15. Remember that wonderful story of the shepherd who leaves all the other sheep and searches everywhere until he finds that one lost sheep. Finding it, there is a great party!

Richard's signatureCaptain Richard Beadle
Like all of us, it had no intention of losing its way. Indeed, it probably thought it wasn't lost at all. This parable shows us two wonderful things about Jesus, our Shepherd: 1) The value God places on you! 2) The lengths to which God will go to save you!
Some of us would say, ‘It's only one out of a hundred sheep, no big deal, nobody will miss it.’ Wrong, the Good Shepherd will! Understand this: If you had been the only person who ever lived, Jesus would have gone to the cross and died just for you. Next time you feel worthless and unloved, think about that!

There will be no service in Killdallon to allow parishioners to support the GFS service.

Sustentation / Free Will Offerings

Gift dayGifts EurosWe really value the gifts of all our parishioners and friends of the various Parishes in our group - without your giving the work of the Church would not be possible. As in recent years may we once again gently encourage people to ensure that their offerings are with the various Parish Treasurers by the last Sunday of the year. This year it will fall on the 30th December so it really would be ideal if gifts could be received the Sunday before - 23rd December. If we can comply with this request then the treasurers will have opportunity to bank your gifts before the end of the financial year, ie 31st December. This will enable us to produce a set of accounts based on the balance in the account at that date.
Once again can we publicly share our appreciation of the work of our various money counters, recorders and the parish treasurers, and would ask you to get your gifts to them rather than then having to come to you, a task which is difficult, time consuming and embarrassing for all concerned. Unfortunately, if your gift has not been banked by the 31st December then it will not appear in the 2012 accounts. This is in accordance with recent charities legislation that tightens our recording procedures. Thank you all once again for your support in giving to the Church.

PoppyRemembrance Day - Today- 11th November

Let us Never Forget those who fought for us, so many of whom gave their lives to keep us free from Oppression and Tyranny. Lord, help us remember them.
On 11th November, especially, but also throughout the year, we have the opportunity to remember the efforts of those special people. In remembering, we pay homage to those who responded to their country’s needs. We should pause for two minutes of silent tribute to the many who died to keep us free.

I wonder if you were impressed with the development of the Scribe recently. It really is a publication the Diocese should be proud of. As you can imagine it involves a great team of helpers including our own distributors for each parish. To help ease the burden during the end of year festivities and weather uncertainties please encourage our Scribe collectors by giving your Scribe subscriptions for next year as soon as possible. The cost is €16.50 or £12.50 for a year.

operation mobilisation logoOM Big Red Bus Team are Back!

A Letter of Thanks

We have received a letter from OM thanking the church for our generosity as €433 towards the replacement bus was given following our harvest supper. (Please note other gifts have been sent individually by some parishes). News about the bus followed;

“You will be glad to know that in September, Colm drove the new bus to the OM team base in Roscommon. It was received with great joy, our hearts were full of praise as we took it on a test run. The Bus is now with the refitters and we hope to have it returned before Christmas. It will be exciting to see all the uses the Lord will put it to!
We would value your prayers as the Creative team will be sharing the Good news through two different Dramas this Christmas. They will visit more than 60 different primary schools between the two teams! (This includes 9 different schools locally in Newtowngore, Killeshandra, Kildallon, Ballyconnell, Swanlinbar, Kinawley and Florencecourt from 17th to 19th December.) We know that you were blessed by the team this summer so we hope you can pray with insight.
A further praise point besides the money the Lord has released to buy and fit out the bus is that the Maintenance team fitted a complete oil central heating system into Lacken House (our team base). The people who live there long term are so grateful it was in place just before the cold weather.
Finally we are delighted that OM are celebrating ten years in Ireland this November. May God continue to use this work. The Lord Bless and keep you.
Your sincerely Catherine O Brolchain

In God's Army
God's ArmyA friend was in front of me coming out of church one day, the minister was standing at the door as he always did to shake hands. He grabbed my friend by the hand and pulled him aside. The minister said to him, "You need to join the Army of the Lord!"
My friend replied, "I'm already in the Army of the Lord, Reverend."
So the minister questioned, "Then why do we only see you at Christmas, Easter and Harvest Thanksgiving?"
He whispered back, "I'm in the Secret Service."

Teaching the Lords prayerTeaching ‘The Lord’s Prayer’
Lords Prayer A mother was teaching her three year old daughter The Lord's Prayer. For several evenings at bedtime, she repeated it after her mother. One night she said she was ready to go solo. The mother listened with pride, as she carefully enunciated each word right up to the end..."And lead us not into temptation", she prayed, "but deliver us some e-mail, Amen."
