Swimming Lessons

Church of Ireland Cross
Swimming I wonder what kind of swimmer you are? Recently Pauline encouraged me to go along with her to swimming lessons. I must admit I have gone reluctantly. Swimming is not my favourite pastime. I could only see the point of it in younger days if firstly it was warm and secondly I could see fish below in Spain or somewhere exotic! You can see I am not a regular swimmer! So what kind of swimmer am I? Well the sort who kind of get by with a couple of strokes that I feel fairly comfortable with but would be exhausted after one or two lengths. I would be happy out of my depth but not for too long! Proper swimmers (like my children!) laugh at my technique. It won’t win an Olympics that’s for sure! Many children locally are coming on in leaps and bounds, they have been to lessons regularly. They have been taught the correct techniques, are increasingly confident and indeed some are now training to save others! I was never taught properly, I have just made do and am now trying to unlearn lots of faulty techniques! Most importantly I am learning to breathe properly, though I still have much to find out. swimmerLearning to breathe properly changes everything. There is no sense of panic. There is no sense of mad hurry. Instead there is a sense of order and peace. Breathing is a great key that helps a swimmer cover great distance. My swimming classes have made me think about my faith with God. In a way taking time to be aware of God and your place in his hands is like learning to breathe when swimming.
Richard's signatureCaptain Richard Beadle
An awareness that I am in God’s purpose for me makes a vital difference. It can give me confidence to stay the distance. The sense of panic when I feel out of my depth is lessened. As a swimmer trusts his knowledge of breathing and learned technique, I trust. Thinking upon an image used by Brendan at our last harvest service I trust that God is holding my hand. Like my swimming, sometimes our journey of faith needs some unlearning too. Sometimes our views on God need correcting. Keep on learning and growing whatever age we might be. It is so worth it!

Prayer letter from Beryl Baker

Dear Praying Friends,
The Lord Says:- "I Will Instruct You And Teach You In The Way You Should Go; I Will Guide You With My Eye." Psalm 32:8.
Beryl BakerJune 12th seems a long time ago but looking back over the three months in the U.K I can see how the words of Psalm 32:8 were oh so true for that time.
My brother Ted's 85th birthday in the Medway Hospital was a very important appointment that the Lord helped me to keep with the help of my niece June and her husband Tony who met me at Heathrow and took me straight to my brother's bedside.
The next ten days were spent acclimatizing to the British summer weather - 28C on leaving Asuncion - 14C on arriving in London and preparing for Ted's homecoming by way of getting his beloved garden shipshape. Then the next 4 weeks caring for him 24/7 and assessing his capability of coping with life at his home. The result of a fall on my first weekend away landed him back in hospital where he remained until 31st August. Now he has started a new lease of life at Grace Manor Care Centre which is just outside of Gillingham.
Seven years absence from the U.K. meant I had a great deal of catching up to do from as far afield as Chipping Norton, Oxford, Harlow, Northern and Southern Ireland, Switzerland, Northumberland, Heath, Bexley, Ferring and Walton On Thames. Hospital visits made me realise that the wards are places where
patients and their relatives want to know about Jesus and are ready to step into the kingdom of God if there is someone around to show them the way.
On 4th September I was seeing a Paraguay that seemed different from the one I'd left 3 months previously. My vision had so adjusted in the U.K. to neatness, order, an nth degree of cleanliness and hygiene that the sight of broken pavements and un-repaired roads, buildings in sore need of some maintenance and a lick of paint, litter and total disorder plus the heat which all added up to a daunting culture shock. After 3 days I headed back to the Chaco and I was relieved to find the dogs and the deer healthy and happy to see me. Patients soon started to arrive plus most of the Indian Health Promoters. Cleaning and replenishing stocks took up the hours until the arrival of Jo Hazleton from C.M.S. on Friday 14th. A medical trip to La Patria some 110 kms off the beaten track with a temperature of 41C was an endurance test for everyone as the number of patients seemed to be without end.
Beryl Baker Sunday morning Jo was whisked away to Makthlawaiya with Tim Curtis, and I headed to the church at Rio Verde.
Monday the clinic was full from 6.30 a.m. until late afternoon followed by Tuesday with a winter temperature of 42C. At 11.30 p.m. a storm arrived which brought an end to the heat. Very high winds, thunder and lightning were quite something but no damage was done, however in Mario Roque Alonso a suberb of Asuncion near the river, a tornado had demolished numerous homes and other buildings and several people were killed by falling trees and collapsed buildings.
On Thursday I traveled back to town for the Centenary of St. Andrew's Church. I had the privilege of working as a guide and counselor for the visitors who came to the display of photos, historic documents and books every afternoon and evening.
A tea on Saturday afternoon was followed by the debut of a documentary DVD.
On Sunday the church was packed for the 10 a.m. Holy Communion service.
Points for praise and prayer.
Pastor Augustin Maidana is making a good recovery from his major heart attack.
My brother Ted at Grace Manor and his ongoing walk with Jesus and the Anglican vicar Rev Suzanne Prattle from Rainham who is visiting him every Wednesday.
For my niece June who has a broken leg, her sister Marion who has a dicey heart condition, Ann who is 58 and has arthritis, Paul still doing shift work at the Ford Motor works at Dagenham and Alan who has the brunt of the burden of renting or selling his Dad's house to cover the costs for his ongoing care at Grace Manor.
Finally, a big. big "thank you" to everyone for help with traveling,
hospitality and such warm welcomes. My regrets are that I could not
see everyone.

May the Lord bless you all.
Love and prayers,
Beryl.

Prayer : Thank You Lord

At this time of thanks-giving let us think about the more mundane ‘Thank-yous’

Lord, thank you for this sink of dirty dishes; we have plenty of food to eat.

Thank you for this pile of dirty, stinky laundry; we have plenty of nice clothes to wear.

And I would like to thank you, Lord, for those unmade beds; they were so warm and comfortable last night. I know that many have no bed.

My thanks to you, Lord, for this bathroom, complete with all the splattered mirrors, soggy, grimy towels and dirty lavatory; they are so convenient.

Thank you for this finger-smudged refrigerator that so much needs defrosting; It has served us faithfully for many years. It is full of cold drinks and enough leftovers for two or three meals.

Thank you, Lord, for this oven that absolutely must be cleaned today. It has baked so many things over the years.

The whole family is grateful for that tall grass that needs mowing, the lawn that needs raking; we all enjoy the garden.

Thank you, Lord, even for that slamming door. My kids are healthy and able to run and play.

Lord, the presence of all these chores awaiting me says You have richly blessed my family. I shall do them cheerfully and I shall do them gratefully.

Amen.

By Georgy

Church of Ireland Cross   Prayer Points for October and November  Church of Ireland Cross

Let us continue to listen to God in prayer and develop a daily routine of praying for the following on the day of the week indicated;
In light of a season of thanksgiving let us give thanks to God;

Sunday: We give thanks to God and count our blessings, thinking back on our week and praising God for all that he has done for us;
Monday: Thank God for the difficult but eventually successful harvest and the celebration of it. Thank God that even at our worst we have so much when we take a serious look at the pain in our world;
Tuesday: Thank God for the gift of freedom which we often take for granted, that we would be mindful of the sacrifice of the many who gave their lives that we might be free from oppression and tyranny;
Wednesday: Thank God for our refurbished halls, that He would grow His kingdom through the use of our buildings and be a benefit to the community;
Thursday: Thank God for Beryl Baker, Sue Trenier, Pastor Jay and the many missionaries who carry your word with healing to countries around the world;
Friday: Thank God for the schools and colleges, all the teachers and the many other staff necessary to keep them going;
Saturday: Thank God for the hospitals and clinics, doctors, nurses and the many others who work tirelessly to provide for the care and well being of the ill, infirm and injured who rely so heavily on them.

C of I Cross Continue to thank God for so many other gifts as you look around. C of I Cross
