Touching the heart

Church of Ireland Cross
I love musicDo you like singing? As I write we are preparing for this Sunday evening’s Songs of Praise in Templeport while harvest hymns are just around the corner. I am struck by how much music and song play such a key part of church life.
I wonder what your favourite hymns are? I wonder if they change? I know my top ten would be quite different now than say 10 or even 5 years ago. I am pleased to say they have changed as God has touched me anew through the power of other songs old and new.
Consider for a moment the power of song and music to touch our hearts. Sometimes songs have deep memories attached to them from our past. Whenever I think of the “William Tell Overture”, I think of the lone ranger on TV and a Christmas toy I had! Other songs and music might recall a painful memory perhaps attached to someone we loved no longer with us.
Music and song have a power to unite and divide. Watching Olympians with medals and anthems unites a whole country so proud of their identity.
Church HymnalMusic and song have a power to teach. Many parts of the Bible that we think we don’t know we actually may know through words of a song!
Some songs are written to carry great truths like the simple refrain . – “How Great thou art!”
Some songs speak of hope and have a great power to lift us up when we are low like “What a friend we have in Jesus”, or the children’s song, “Our God is a Great Big God! “
As our Songs of Praise will remind us, music and song have been written over generations often with great personal stories attached. Music written from the heart speaks to our heart.
I’m reminded of the great debt we owe to songwriters and composers in the past who still speak to us today.
I also want to say thank you both publicly and to God for our church organists and their commitment week on week. They are each a precious gift to our church family. Thank you.
Richard's signatureCaptain Richard Beadle
May God continue to bless us through the power of song and music.
May God continue to inspire new musicians and songwriters.
May Songs of faith of all generations old and new, continue to fill our hearts, not just on Sundays in church but carry into our Monday to Saturday lives.
Give thanks to God for Music and Song!

A Special Weekend! Bishop Ken & Beryl Baker at opening of the refurbished Tomregan hall

It was wonderful to have Bishop Ken visit us to mark the opening of the refurbished Tomregan Hall in Ballyconnell. We are very thankful to the International Fund for Ireland for their assistance as part of the Rural development Programme, for enabling this work to be completed and special thanks must be given to all those who have worked so hard behind the scenes to make it happen. The challenge now is to make the most of this wonderful resource.
The weekend was made even more special with the visit of Beryl Baker who came over from England especially to see us. It was brilliant for parishioners to finally meet Beryl, having helped her ministry through prayer and giving these past 4 years through SAMS. Beryl was home from Paraguay for the first time in 7 years.
In a quite memorable service we heard more about Beryl’s work as a nurse and how she came to faith. Bishop Ken described her as one of the heroes of Christian faith, one of the world’s lesser known’s. Beryl has served over 30 years in a country few know much about and even fewer have visited. As Beryl shared meetings with parishioners across the group over the weekend we were all touched by her humble service and commitment to Jesus.
Bishop Ken and Beryl Baker presented with copies of 'Folk Tales of Breffny'Both the Bishop and Beryl were presented with a copy of Folk Tales of Breffny a reprint of stories originally collected and published one hundred years ago by Bunda Hunt, a Templeport parishioner. Copies of the book may be bought for €5, €4 of which goes to charities, Beryl Baker in Paraguay, Dr Jay’s Orphanage in India & two others.
Driving Beryl back to Dublin airport we were reminded of God’s goodness. We discovered Beryl was returning to a town in Kent to visit her brother Ted in hospital. With family 5 minutes away from the station I was able to arrange a lift for Beryl to the hospital. My family there also arranged for a church minister to visit Beryl’s brother. Beryl has written to say the minister and brother have had some wonderful conversations. Beryl hopes this relationship will continue when her brother Ted is transferred to Grace Manor Care Centre in the same town. She comments, “I do pray that Ted can go there as this seems to be the best place for him and it certainly has the right name!”
Beryl has been busy since she visited us for a ‘fantastic time on the Emerald Isle’. She writes, ‘I have been here, there and everywhere and the time has flown. There is still a lot to do but I thank you so much for your hospitality and encouragement. As you read this Beryl should now be readjusting to life back in Paraguay.

Kildallon Parish Treasure Hunt

Treasure chestMany thanks to everyone who was up for a challenge! Cars raced across Kildallon and Ballyconnell following clues set by Rev Brendan. It was a great challenge, on a fabulously warm evening finishing with food and prizes at the home of Gerty and Roy. A few answers were hotly disputed and debated only adding to the fun and laughter, while Brendan was requested to explain his answers in his next sermon!

Newtowngore Community Hall

Hospitality at its finest was on display in Newtowngore at a wonderful barbeque. What a wonderful night that was so well organised and so well attended. Thank you to everyone who came and supported the evening. An even bigger thank you to everyone from the parish who hosted and served us. In particular we thank Robert and Alma for enabling it to happen at the back of their shop. Over €6000 was raised during the evening.
The money will be well spent as the 2nd phase of work on the hall is already underway thanks to the award of the Leitrim Leader Grant. The end wall has been demolished to allow the main hall to be extended. The outside walls of the present hall will be renewed and the heating system replaced.

Harvest Giving

Having supported India last year, this year our giving will be nearer to home. To help us further our partnership with Operation Mobilisation we want to help them get a new red bus.
The current vehicle has been in service since 1974 and was previously used as a city bus in England and Scotland. In the early 90's, the Associated Bus Ministry purchased the vehicle and used it for Christian Ministry. A few structure modifications were made and a small kitchen unit was fitted downstairs. Towards the end of 1999, ownership was passed to Operation Big Red BusMobilisation in Ireland, where major modifications took place.
Over the years, volunteers have helped adapt and maintain the vehicle for ministry. Currently the vehicle is in need of major engine, structural, and aesthetic repairs, which in total are not cost effective and would not demonstrate good stewardship to invest in the work needed. A new bus is needed to continue and develop our bus ministry. Further details can be found on the website: www.om.org/give/the-big-red-bus-project
Members of The Big Red Bus team will therefore be helping us with our Harvest Social.

Operation Mobilisation

Big Red Bus     Big Red Bus

What a wonderful few days we have had. Around 75 children experienced a full week of children's clubs in Ballyconnell and Newtowngore. The children's faces alone made it all worthwhile. A huge thank you to everyone who has worked so hard to make this week so special. Thank you to families who provided evening meals, to both our schools for allowing use of their buildings, to parishioners from every parish who provided very welcome lunches and the Slieve Russell for showers for the team. Not least a huge thank you to OM whose team led the work so well and to all our own helpers who gave their time so enthusiastically through the week. Without a huge team effort the clubs would not have been possible. As reported elsewhere in the Newsletter we can all get a better sense of what went on at our forthcoming Harvest social on September 29th. Most of all we give thanks to God for the privilege of serving him in this way. €207.40 was generously given by families for the Big Red Bus project to help the team seek to get a new bus.

The group members take their ministry and faith very seriously and believe that God has given them important opportunities to spread the Gospel through their music.

Susan (age 4) was drinking juice when she got the hiccups. "Please don't give me this juice again," she said, "It makes my teeth cough. "

Children with MumDJ (age 4) stepped onto the bathroom scale and asked: "How much do I cost?"
