Disappointment with God

Church of Ireland Cross

My Singing - My God is so Big! If you asked me what song I remember most from my time in Paraguay it would be that well known children's song - "My God is so big so strong and so mighty, there's nothing that he cannot do." We sang it in English, Spanish and Guarani! Just don't ask me for a solo!
It's a song that of course is mighty in faith. It makes bold statements about God being able to do anything and yet I was struck by the poverty and dire circumstances of those who sang it with such gusto.
Faith by its nature forces us to ask difficult questions. At the moment I am all to aware of many praying that we would see a great big God in action as many parishioners face the most difficult trials and circumstances.
Rob Parsons in his great book," Getting your kids through church without them hating God" shares how on one occasion he was due to speak to a conference of parents with challenging children. Just before he was due to speak he heard the awful circumstances many were going through, tales of bereavement, illness and evil crime.
Rob asked them about their children and how they love them despite the challenges they provide. While longing that the children would be completely well, parents love them anyway. That is how they loved God too. They didn't love God simply because all their prayers were answered and all their dreams fulfilled. They loved him anyway!
As many broke down in tears, Rob went on to say that the test of our love for God is when we can say along with an old prophet, “Though the harvest has failed... yet will I rejoice in the Lord.” Loving God like that is hard, as we carry doubts and fears. But how precious to God is love like that?
Rob then mentioned a little phrase in Daniel. Three young men were to be thrown into a furnace if they refused to bow before an idol. They refused saying, "If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it; but even if he does not, we want you to know, O king that we will not serve your gods." Rob writes, "Their faith in God was not based on always getting what they wanted: they had learned to trust, “but even if he does not."
Many servants of God have been healed and rescued. Many have not. Their stories are just as important as those great stories of rescue. Our God is a big God make no mistake, but he does not remove all our disappointments. Be sure of this: He loves us through all our circumstances but he does not always choose to remove all our pain. Can we love him anyway?

St Peter's Church with graveyardLooking after our Graveyards

Cavan - Monaghan Leader (CML) intend to run a Care and Conservation of Historic Graveyards Training Course in September / October 2011. This practical training course is targeted at volunteers and community groups who are or may be considering maintaining and conserving the historic graveyards in their areas. The training course will consist of four evening sessions and two all day sessions. The venue (likely to be Cavan based) and study trip will be decided based on the location of participants. It may possibly be most beneficial if we are able to get representatives from Kildallon, Swanlinbar, Templeport and Tomregan along to this. If you might be interested please have a word with Richard.

Visiting Beryl Baker in the ChacoVisit to Beryl Baker in the Chaco

For the last three years we have been giving financial aid for medical supplies for Beryl, a missionary nurse working with The South American Missionary Society. Beryl lives in the Chaco in Paraguay, an area that is rough and wild. She is not easy to contact as the post is totally unreliable. A Christmas card may come the following October! Internet connection is available when she gets to Asunción, the capital city once a month for supplies.
Visit to Beryl Baker in the ChacoIt was therefore brilliant to finally get to meet Beryl and to see where she lives and works. I have already spoken a little about the visit in some churches but here are a few impressions.
Beryl is a remarkable lady who has given her life to serving the people of the Chaco. She has now been there 32 years. Beryl is a nurse who has had to persevere in the most difficult circumstances and yet she is still radiant with the love of God.
Having been in hospital for a wee while last year, some of you have kindly asked after Beryl's health. I can report happily that she is looking very well indeed.
I discovered Beryl loves people and animals too. It was a shock to find Oscar the Giant Anteater in the living room when we arrived! As well as people an owl and a turtle have been among her other past patients! While she helps with practical medical care, Beryl has a wonderful manner with all those she meets, young and old.
Perhaps most of all I was struck by two things. Beryl has a love for Jesus that she takes every opportunity to share in the most lovely gentle way. In my short visit patients with time on their hands were invited into the home to watch a Christian DVD. Her young maid 17yrs old is a new Christian who delights in Beryl sharing in a bible study every morning.
Secondly Beryl lives by faith - trusting in God for the future - finance, health and security. This is how she has lived her last 30 years in Paraguay! At some point she will retire, probably to the capital city in Paraguay. Even then she hopes to get involved with serving others perhaps helping addicts and young people.
Beryl was so encouraged by my visit on your behalf and she was very keen to say thank you for all the support we continue to give. All our money goes on medicines for patients. If it is ever practical she would love to come and visit us to say thank you in person.
As well as seeing Beryl, I spent 11 days with the Anglican Church in the town of Concepción (over four hrs drive from Beryl). There is no space to write about this here. The children's and youth work especially were memories I long to share with you all shortly. The whole trip to Paraguay was an enormous blessing.
There should soon be many new photographs on the Paraguay pages of the web site.

Bereavement

Alpha logo

Our thoughts and prayers are very much with Aubrey Hyland and the whole family as they bear the loss of Aubrey’s dear wife Ina. Her funeral was marked by a note of real celebration. Ina’s life touched many, not least through her many years teaching the young children in Newtowngore. We will all remember Ina’s courage and humour in these difficult last years. .

Heavenly Father, give us faith and light in times of darkness. May our trusting in you help us live with questions unanswered. Grant us a certain hope in You, that will grow to surpass immeasurably the greatest depths of despair felt now. In you our Lord we put our trust. .

Following the interest in the persecuted church that followed the visit of a speaker at Easter we are now receiving copies of the Open Doors magazine. We are also making a list of anyone who would like to keep informed by receiving this well written magazine every month to your door. At the moment the middle East countries are going through great national upheaval and the Christian minorities are especially vulnerable. Please pray and keep informed if you can. Lists will be in church for the magazine or simply let Richard know if you would want to keep informed

The Word for TodayUCB Word for Today logo

I received a phone call from U.C.B. thanking us for our support for “The Word For Today.” They were very appreciative of the interest shown, and the support given. It was very gratifying to know that we had been able to help in the establishment and success of many projects aimed at reaching more people with God’s word, and so helping them to make Jesus and his love known. I would also like to say a sincere ‘thank you’ to those from the different parishes who have helped in the distribution of the booklets, ensuring they have been received on time.

Beatrice Crawford

We currently distribute about 50 copies of “The word for Today”. If anyone would like their own copy of these Bible notes which have proved so helpful to so many please let Beatrice or myself know. There is no charge although donations to help cover costs are obviously appreciated. The notes can also be received by email and are available from this web page: www.ucb.co.uk/_for_today Richard's signature

Templeport Boathouse

Opening of the new St Mogue's Boathouse

It was brilliant to see so many parishioners supporting the Bawnboy Festival events once again this year. The bank holiday traditionally sees boat visits to St Mogue’s Island in Templeport lake and it was a delight to see the new boat house officially opened. The previous boathouse was destroyed in a storm. The new boathouse has been built with the support of the whole community and a great crowd turned up on a lovely afternoon for the opening ceremony.

Work

A man came home from work and found his three children outside, still in their pyjamas, playing in the mud, with empty food boxes and wrappers strewn all around the front yard. The door of his wife’s car was open, as was the front door to the house, and there was no sign of the dog. Proceeding into the entry, he found an even bigger mess. A lamp had been knocked over, and the throw rug was wadded against one wall. In the front room the TV was loudly blaring a cartoon channel, and the family room was strewn with toys and various items of clothing. No housework todayIn the kitchen, dishes filled the sink, breakfast food was spilled on the counter, the fridge door was open wide, dog food was spilled on the floor, a broken glass lay under the table, and a small pile of sand was spread by the back door. He quickly headed up the stairs, stepping over toys and more piles of clothes, looking for his wife. He was worried she might be ill, or that something serious had happened. He was met with a small trickle of water as it made its way out the bathroom door. As he peered inside he found wet towels, scummy soap and more toys strewn over the floor. Miles of toilet paper lay in a heap and toothpaste had been smeared over the mirror and walls. As he rushed to the bedroom, he found his wife still curled up in the bed in her pyjamas, reading a novel. She looked up at him, smiled, and asked how his day went.
He looked at her bewildered and asked,
“What happened here today?”
She again smiled and answered, “You know every day when you come home from work and you ask me what in the world I do all day?”
“Yes,” was his incredulous reply.
She answered, “Well, today I didn’t do it.”

Marbeth Hill,
