Fishing

Church of Ireland Cross

Family fishingI wonder if you like fishing? Living in such beautiful countryside full of lakes for a while now; dad thought it was time to introduce the kids to a spot of fishing the other weekend when we went camping. Armed with a small rod suitable for kids and a couple of spinners so we didn’t have to mess with those lively maggot things, we got underway. Catch any fish? - well it didn’t take long and we were all tangled up!
It didn’t take too long and we were snagged on the bottom as well!
Still we persevered and slowly we all got the hang of casting and reeling in with four of us taking turns.
The next morning dad sneaked 5 minutes peace and caught a pike. An afternoon spell saw a perch caught as well. One daughter made a telling observation , “How come daddy you catch all the fish when we’re not there?” In truth dad and daughter had much to learn!
FishermanJesus knew a bit about fishing as did his disciples. Peter, James and John were expert fishermen who knew the joy of a good catch, yet who also knew hard work and effort yielding disappointment.
Famously Peter was turned from a fisher of fish to a fisher of men as he devoted his life to introducing men and women everywhere to the joy of knowing Jesus. There was excitement at catching fish but this was nothing compared to the joy of seeing men and women committing their lives to following Jesus, their lives forever changed.
As I write, this coming Sunday is Pentecost. It is a day that is often celebrated as the birthday of the Church - the day the church was born. Filled with the power of the Holy Spirit the disciples led by Peter shared Jesus and lives were changed. Three thousand people joined the church that day!
The task of the church remains the same as that given to Peter - that we would be fishers of men.
I suspect we often feel as ill equipped and lacking knowledge when called to share Jesus. We might even resemble my family fishing - all tangled up and snagged!
We may feel poorly equipped but that‘s where the Holy Spirit comes in.
Where the Holy Spirit is present and able to reveal the love of Jesus, the lives of ordinary people are changed.
We may not have the right words
We may not have all our ideas sorted out
We may not feel able to contribute very much to the building of God’s kingdom.
Yet all of us are able to choose whether to follow Jesus, all of us are able to pray “Come, Holy Spirit come.” Far more important than anything we have to offer, the Holy Spirit, the presence of Jesus himself is the one who brings real change.
Some of the exciting events this summer in our group are away overseas. It’s brilliant to see a team going to India visiting a children‘s orphanage, while I go to Paraguay for a long awaited meeting with Beryl Baker. Out of our comfort zone may all going be open to see more of the God who loves us and longs to use each one of us. We go to be a blessing yet I suspect it will be more the other way around - we will be the ones most blessed meeting ordinary people with far less, humbly following Jesus.
Presently Brendan and I are planning harvest. We want it to be about real lives, ordinary lives, changed through knowing Jesus. Summer goes all too quickly - why not begin in prayer now that God would use our harvest season for his glory? I wonder how we can learn to be fishers of men the Jesus, Holy Spirit way?

Newtowngore Hall Tomregan HallHalls

We hope to see Tomregan and Newtowngore halls start major works in August / September. Both projects are presently tendering for builder’s quotes for work to commence. While neither work will completely refurbish the halls, there will be huge improvements to both. The detail will be dependant on how far available money will go. The priority for Tomregan is the roof while Newtowngore’s priority is the kitchen and toilet area which will be enlarged and redesigned to include an additional meeting room. It is a credit to both hall committees that we have got this far and our thanks once again to the Rural Development Fund for making these works possible. Please note the commencement of work will mean these halls will be unavailable through the autumn.

Paraguay

Richard BeadleWell it’s only a month before I travel to Paraguay for just over two weeks. On behalf of this group of parishes who have given so generously since we established the link in 2009, I am really looking forward to meeting up with Beryl and having the opportunity to feed back a little from my visit. My flights are booked, I’ve had my injections, (yellow fever was the really important one) need to sort out the travel insurance and I’m ready to go. Due to a bereavement I was unable to meet up with the rest of the team but will see everyone this Pentecost Sunday. The team of eight are from four counties in Ireland.
Paraguay mapFor much of our visit we will be staying with a church group in Concepción and I will get way for a couple of days especially to see Beryl. Team leaderClaire Holmes has lived in Paraguay before with Sams though presently lives near Lurgan. She wrote recently to me to say “The church in Concepcion has been going through a hard time and I know it will be a big encouragement for them to have us there. I know they are very excited.”
Beryl BakerI depart from Ireland on 7th July and return on 24th July.
Please pray that God would use my visit and the visit of the team to be a real encouragment to the local church in Paraguay
Please pray that the visit will deepen our own appreciation of Beryl Baker’s work and the wider work of SAMS in South America.
Please also pray for my family as I suspect I will be out of contact much of the time I am away.
Finally please pray for the team I am with - for God’s protection in travel and relationships.
I really look forward to reporting back in services on my return! Thank you once again for all your support.

Bereavements

Alpha logo

With sorrow and shock our sympathies are extended to the Cassidy family following the tragic death of Jason from Ballyconnell.  David and Phyllis have lost a precious and dear son, Dawn, Glen and Mark a dear brother. For a great circle of family and friends life has changed profoundly.
As a church family may we each continue to seek to be a blessing and support to all those affected by loss. May we also seek God’s strength to see light in the way ahead.

Heavenly Father, give us faith and light in times of darkness. May our trusting in you help us live with questions unanswered. Grant us a certain hope in You, that will grow to surpass immeasurably the greatest depths of despair felt now. In you our Lord we put our trust. .

Ready Steady Cook

Ok who’s the best cook? Seán Cassidy or Brendan? I’m not sure we ever discovered the answer but we did have a great nights fun and many thanks to Pauline, Jennie, Seán and Brendan and the Tomregan hall committee for a great nights entertainment. As well as being a fabulous night the evening raised €435.00 for Tomregan hall renovation.

Trip to India India

When I first suggested a visit to the House of Peace orphanages in Salem, India a few months ago I had hoped that perhaps ten to a dozen parishioners and friends might be interested in going. I am absolutely delighted that on the 21st July twenty three of us will be flying from Dublin to Bangalore and then onwards by train to Salem. While there we will take part in voluntary work aimed at improving the health of the orphans and enhancing their living conditions.
The House of Peace orphanages are exceptionally well run by Revd Dr Jayaraj Krishnan and his team which includes his wife and daughter (who is a doctor) as well as his two adult sons. The orphanage has grown from two children that Jay and his wife, Christy, rescued from the streets more than twenty years ago to around 2,000 children today. When I first visited the orphanages in 1999 they were in the middle of a busy and crowded city. Living conditions were cramped and many basic facilities were lacking.
Today most of the orphans live in recently built accommodation in a wonderful rural site known as 'The Promised Land'. Jay now runs a number of schools for the orphans and other village children as well as training colleges for teachers and nurses. He runs a weekly outreach programme to some five hundred people with leprosy as well as supervising five village churches. The man, his family and the work that he does are truly inspirational.
Bishop Ken The orphanages and other programmes face a continuous battle to remain open. Jay has done much to try to make the orphanages self-sufficient in food by running a farm, but there is always a shortfall in provision. All orphans receive free education, food and lodgings from the orphanage and the cost of this constantly rises as the Indian economy expands. The challenge now is to ensure that the orphanages and other ministries are kept going .
I hope that our team will not only be of help to the orphanages while we are there but that all the team members (as well as those who are unable to be with us this time) will catch a vision for sponsoring children, supporting Jay's work and encouraging him, his family and his team of workers.
Rev BrendanI am delighted that we have been able to arrange for Jay and his daughter Neva to visit Ireland in November this year so everyone in our parishes will have an opportunity to meet them. In the meantime, may I thank everyone who has contributed to fund-raising for the orphanages so far and may I ask you to pray for the team as we travel and work together.
Bishop Ken will be with us for a special commissioning service in Templeport Parish Church on Sunday 17th July at 11am. This will be a very special occasion and I hope that as many parishioners as possible will be able to join in this united service and give the India team a great send-off.......I can hardly wait!

Sunday School Prizegiving

Thank you May I thank everyone who supported a great day. Even the weather turned out grand after the wind and rain of the week.
As always it is great to recognise the time and energy children and leaders put into the life of the Sunday School through so much of the year. Thank you to the Forward group who helped organise the food and refreshments. After the prize giving service and food many children and a few adults took part in some fun games including favourites like sack races and tug of war.

On the right are only a few thimbnails of the many photographs taken on Sunday May 29th.
All these and a great many more photographs taken on the day may be found at:

Church Needed Painting

It seems that there was a little church painted white and with a high steeple. One Sunday, the rector noticed that the church needed painting. He checked the local newspaper advertisements and found a paint sale. The next day, he went into town and bought four gallons of white paint. He went back out to the church and began the job. Painter up ladderHe got done with the first side and back. It was looking great. But he noticed he had already used more than two gallons. He didn't want to drive back in town and being the creative person that he was, he found a gallon of old paint thinner in the shed behind the church, and began to thin his paint. It worked out great. He finished the remaining two sides and even had a little paint left over. That night, it rained; it rained hard. PainterThe next morning when he stepped out of the rectory to admire his work, he saw that the first side and back were looking great, but much of the paint on the other two sides had washed away leaving streaky marks. The pastor looked up to sky in anguish and cried out, "What shall I do?" A voice came back from the heavens saying, "Repaint, and thin no more!"
