United in Love

Church of Ireland Cross

Church Army logoWell; after all the busyness of Easter, and a wonderful week walking and exploring in sunny Wales, I went to the Church Army Conference in Derbyshire. Held every 2 years I count it both a privilege and a priority to go to keep in touch with the ongoing life of the Church Army of which I am a part. I suspect there were about 200 Church Army officers present. As the only Church Army Officer presently employed in the Republic of Ireland it’s hugely important I keep in touch.
It’s always great to catch up with lots of friends, some of whom I’ve worked or trained with. I have to say that this year was particularly special for a very different reason. Looking at the programme, I and many others had been concerned about a discussion which was planned for near the end of the conference. It included a very difficult issue that had caused much pain and controversy in the past. In recent years the conference has left business and thorny issues for other days in the year because experience had shown they could cloud the whole atmosphere.
Well I’m pleased to say the discussion did take place. Instead of being the part of the conference we had feared it turned out to be the most important and special part of the week. Pain and hurts were shared. People listened. Fears, hopes and uncertainties were all shared in the most wonderful atmosphere of love. The Church is often pulled apart for it’s disunity and yet here was an example of something quite special. Different views were shared, yet a beautiful love in action prevailed. Praise God.
The Hayes conference centreLove is a distinctive mark of the church as it should be. This was a quality that was found in the early church. It’s what made the church so attractive and different. The church took note and acted upon Jesus instruction in John‘s gospel, "A new commandment I give to you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this will all men know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Years later the ancient historian Tertullian reported that the Romans would exclaim, “See how they love one another!” Justin Martyr sketched Christian love this way: “We who used to value the acquisition of wealth and possessions more than anything else now bring what we have into a common fund and share it with anyone who needs it. We used to hate and destroy one another and refused to associate with people of another race or country. Now, because of Christ, we live together with such people and pray for our enemies.”
The church had taken note and so did everyone else and the church grew.
Of course it’s much easier to love those whom you already like and get on with. The Christian love stands out because it seeks a love even for enemies. Paul perhaps shares an important key in Philippians 2:3 where he tells us, "with humility of mind, regard one another as more important than yourselves." Jesus showed that love in action as he put each of us before himself on the cross.
I love the church here in this quiet rural land where God has called me. I love the warmth and generosity I find. Yet we must never be complacent. As we journey with hopes, fears, joy and pain may we continue to bear the marks of Christ’s church - his family. May we grow in a deep love for Christ and for one another.

Gospel Concert

About 170 people attended a very successful evening of Gospel singing in Swanlinbar during which approximately £1,930.00 was raised. A great supper was served afterwards in the school hall. Brendan compered the evening which was arranged by Margaret Crawford, we thank her and also the ladies and gentlemen of Swanlinbar and Kinawley for all their hard work organizing the arrangements and providing the food. Victor Hutchinson and Margaret Johnston were great performers as were Brendan and his Daughter Cara and her friend Rob. An uplifting evening was enjoyed by all present.

Persecuted churchPeter from ‘Open Doors’ Christian Charity gave us a talk on the Persecuted Church in Tomregan Church in Ballyconnell on 19th April. Our eyes were opened to the great suffering that Christians endure in many countries and the incredibly brave witness of ordinary men and women in countries such as Afghanistan, Egypt, Pakistan and North Korea.

Looking back on a Holy Week

The word Holy means ‘set apart’ and yes this week was quite different to much of the year! The weather was splendid and 40 parishioners took part in our week’s walking to each church in the group with stops to pray. We ended the week all fitter and knowing each other a little better than before.
The week held many other highlights. Guests Rev Jean Mackeral, Andrew Harwood and Brendan gave us all insights into their faith on a question night that was really good fun as well as informative. In a very different tone many were moved and disturbed by the presentation by Peter from Open Doors. (If anyone might want to follow this up in a practical way please speak to Richard).
Wednesday welcomed Canon Eric Magirr and a well attended healing service making you want to continue to pray.
Thursday saw members of Omagh-Waterford Peace choir thrill us both with their story and their singing.
On Good Friday children made hot cross buns and shared in the Easter story in the morning, while our final walk took us to Kinawley to renew our baptism vows.
It didn’t just happen, thanks to all concerned.

Good Friday Hot Cross Bun Bake

hotcross bunOn Good Friday the children of the combined parishes had a great time making hot cross buns on which many put their own initials. The buns had a Marshmallow in the middle which melted to leave a hole to remind us of the empty tomb.
The fun filled morning of activities ended with the children showing the hot cross buns they made themselves.

THE VALUE OF OLD AGE

Remember, old folks are worth a fortune, with silver in their hair, gold in their teeth, stones in their kidneys and gas in their stomachs.
I have become a little older since I spoke to you last and some changes have come into my life. I'm quite a frivolous old girl. I am seeing five gentlemen each day.
Elderly lady As soon as I wake up Will Power helps me out of bed, then I visit Lou. Next, it's time for Mr. Quaker to give me my oats. They leave and Arthur Ritis shows up and stays for the rest of the day. He doesn't stay in one place very long so he takes me from joint to joint. After such a busy day I'm ready for bed with Earl Grey. What a life!. And; Oh yes I'm flirting with Al Zymer.
The minister called the other day and said "At your age you should be thinking about the hereafter." I told him "Oh I do, no matter where I am, in the lounge or in the kitchen, upstairs or in the yard, I ask myself- Now what am I here after???"

Thoughts from an elderly lady (contributed by Andy Richardson).

Church of Ireland Cross   Prayer Points for the remainder of May and June  Church of Ireland Cross

Let us continue to listen to God in prayer and develop a daily routine of praying for the following on the day of the week indicated;

Sunday: Pray for your church here in this community. We ask for the renewal of faith, hope and love among your people today
Monday: Pray for the work of vestries as Easter vestries are underway again. Grant wisdom, purpose and fun in a necessary part of church life;
Tuesday: Pray for all those going away this summer to see your church at work overseas. We pray for all those going to India to visit the children's orphanage and for Richard visiting Beryl Baker in Paraguay;
Wednesday: Pray for those in employment especially thinking of those in the Quinn group and local farmers as they win silage and hay.
Thursday: Pray for those who are missing loved ones through the pain of death. We ask that the sure and certain hope of Christ would lighten our darkness;
Friday: Pray for many struggling with the pain of illness. As we pray for healing and hope we ask for a renewing of trust in God's Fatherly care;
Saturday:

Pray for the work developing church halls in the group particularly Tomregan and Newtowngore as they shortly tender for major works. We pray for the use of the halls after the work would really help build up the local communities;
