Memories
Church of Ireland Cross

I wonder what your memory is like? Mine could be so much better. I can relate to a quote like that told by Mario Rocco “Memory is what tells a man that his wife's birthday was yesterday.” Some things are good to remember others are fine to forget!
Life is full of memories. They shape who we are. Good memories can strengthen and encourage us to look forward. On the other hand, bad memories can have the capacity to cripple individuals, families and nations if not handled correctly. There is terrific power in memories to both heal and to hurt. I can remember some family members who blamed the Japanese for everything that went wrong in the world even Charles and Dianna’s divorce! They had never forgiven the Japanese nation for a family members illness attributed to his time serving in Burma. Sometimes we can easily hold on to and nurse hurts when God wants us to let the hurt go.
Chile Miners rescue drillRemembrance day in its proper context is a day to help heal and learn from the mistakes of the past. The painful and often heroic sacrifice of so many in wars past and present reveals the all too painful cost of conflict.
Remembering gives value to their sacrifice. It is a day to give thanks and to ask questions. It is a day to strengthen our resolve that we should do all in our power to find ways that seek peace.
Remembering is a key part of God’s word in the Bible. The Bible is a story of memories to remember Him; to look at the future with Him looking back.
Ecclesiastes reminds us to “Remember your creator” The nation Israel was built remembering the incredible escape from Egypt to a new land. The Passover meal is a meal of remembrance of that act of rescue. In the New Testament Jesus is the Passover lamb sacrificed for us. We celebrate Communion, the bread and the wine in remembrance of his body and his blood, following the command of our Lord, “Do this in remembrance of me.”
The criminal on the cross asked Jesus, “Remember me in your kingdom.” In this desperate moment he turned to Jesus. As he fixed his eyes on Jesus his life was changed.
The most incredible fact of Christ’s forgiveness at the heart of the Cross is all about remembering. Christ deliberately chooses not to remember. Our sin is left on the cross and dealt with once and for all.
What we do with our memories is incredibly important. Remembering with Jesus and in his presence reshapes, restores and renews our souls.

Community Christmas Carols

Choir singing carolsAt our away day in the summer one group of parishioners suggested we might do some carol singing in our local communities. Some of you might remember we had a very informal practice at our harvest concert!! Any way please watch out for news on this in the coming weeks. It's a really great way for our churches to be seen and be a blessing to our neighbours.

Swanlinbar Supper DanceSwanlinbar dance kitchen helpers

The Swanlinbar dance in Enniskillen was a good night out with great dancing and craic. Of course it didn’t just happen and a great team of parishioners served the supper and ensured the night was a great success.
Not long after this the parish held a gift day with a Songs of Praise Service to mark the occasion. At the time of writing it has raised £1095 & €293. Despite the atrocious weather many folk from across the group and neighbouring friends supported a most uplifting evening of praise.
A big thank you again to all who helped the night happen and all who came along.

Seniors Grand Night Out!

At the dinner table at last year's partyOur Senior 's Dinner will take place this year between 5.30pm and 9.30pm on Saturday 11th December in Ballyconnell parish hall. It's a feast not to be missed. We encourage all our senior citizens from the whole group to come along. Transport will be provided for anyone that needs it and the whole evening will be free. It would be great to get as many folk as possible involved in our ministry to the more senior members of our community. Here are some ways to help support our Senior's dinner;

You could perhaps provide some crackers to dress the table;
You could supply something like a box of chocolates or toiletries to be given as a gift on the day;
You could give a box of after dinner mints to be eaten with the tea / coffee;
You could offer your car on the day to bring folk to the dinner, home from dinner or both!

A much enjoyed highlight last year was the dance after the meal, it was open to all parishioners not just our older members. Please help us make it a grand night out!

The photo was taken at last year's party.

It was a real joy therefore to receive an email recently with a picture of Beryl Baker in receipt of some of our blankets following the visit of teams from Ireland to the Chaco. Next summer SAMS will send teams to visit the Chaco. If you would like to explore this please let Richard know.

Called to be 'Kingdom Women'

Kingdom Women logoSix ladies from our group joined 170 women, from as far a field as Ballymena and Longford for a morning of worship and teaching in Ardess Parish centre, Fermanagh. It was fantastic that this new event was so full, a very tight squeeze!
The first speaker Heather Morris read from 1 Peter 2:9 and taught that we are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation and that we belong to God. We are called to live for Jesus and be distinctive, to ‘stand out in the crowd’.
Heather acknowledged that it is a high and a tough calling in this world and that we cannot do it on our own - we need to be totally dependent on God. Being distinctive - Heather said - means to trust God, and be constantly loving, not going along with the crowd, no matter what.
After a bite to eat Hilary McClay then led us through the Bible story of Ruth.
Ruth was a wonderful ‘Kingdom Woman’ even when things were going against her, as she experienced disappointments early in life.
She was a woman who made good choices in how to live; she worked hard, was thoughtful, looked after those in need and chose to be generous to others even when she had little herself.
We were challenged as to how we deal with disappointments: do we make good choices when life is difficult or do we behave the way the world behaves?
During the final singing there was time for ministry, when teams were available for those who wished to come forward for prayer.
So Ladies, if you want to grow in your faith why not consider coming on November 5th next year.

Sustentation / Free will offerings

Money collection plateMoney offeringWe really value the gifts of all our parishioners and friends of the various Parishes in our group - without your giving the work of the Church would not be possible. Once again can we gently encourage people to ensure that their offerings are with the various Parish Treasurers by the last Sunday of the year, ie 27th December - ideally the Sunday before - 19th December. If we can comply with this request then the Treasurers will have opportunity to bank your gifts before the end of the financial year, ie 31st December. This will enable us to produce a set of accounts based on the balance in the account at that date.
We are also greatly appreciative of the work of our various money counters, recorders and the Parish Treasurers, and would ask you to get your gifts to them rather than them having to come to you, a task which is difficult, time consuming and embarrassing for all concerned. Unfortunately, if your gift has not been banked by the 31st December than it will not appear in the 2010 accounts. This is in accordance with new Charities legislation that tightens our recording procedures. Once again though a huge thank you for your support in giving to the Church.

SmileTime for a smile!

Children’s Worries:
BirdSeveral children found a dead bird. Feeling that a proper burial should be performed, they secured a small box and some cotton wool, dug a hole in the garden and made ready to dispose of the deceased. The minister's 5-year-old son was chosen to say the prayer. And so with great dignity, he intoned, "Glory be to the Father...and unto the Son...and into the hole he goes."

The Way to Heaven:
Ladder to Heaven A teacher was testing the children in her Sunday school class to see if they understood the concept of getting to heaven. She asked them, "If I sold my house and my car, had a big garage sale and gave all my money to the church, would that get me into Heaven?"
"NO!" the children answered.
"If I cleaned the church every day, mowed the graveyard, and kept everything neat and tidy, would that get me into Heaven?"
Again, the answer was, "NO!"
Now she was smiling. Hey, they're getting it, she thought! "Well, then, if I was kind to animals and gave fruit to all the children, and loved my husband, would that get me into Heaven?" she asked.
Again, they all answered, "NO!"
She was just bursting with pride for them. "Well," she continued, "then how can I get into Heaven?"
A five-year-old boy shouted out, "YOU GOTTA BE DEAD."

Church of Ireland Cross   Prayer Points for November and December   Church of Ireland Cross

Let us continue to listen to God in prayer and develop a daily routine of praying for the following on the day of the week indicated;

Sunday: For our lives to be given wholly in worship to God. That God would continue to transform our hearts to follow Him;
Monday: For the life of prayer in our group of churches. May your Holy Spirit both sustain and empower the life of our group;
Tuesday: For our governments in the most difficult financial climate. Grant them wisdom in painful decisons and protect the lives of the most vulnerable and needy;
Wednesday: For all those known to us struggling with illness and for families in their loving and costly support;
Thursday: For those who have been killed or injured in conflicts around the world, particularly those involved in peace keeping duties. May lives not be wasted, rather ways be found for each sacrifice to truly help make this world a better place;
Friday: For families preparing for Christmas. That they would not be trapped by the financial pressures and hype. May the coming season be a time of real spiritual depth and meaning in the midst of the business;
Saturday: For Beryl Baker in the Chaco region of Paraguay. For her health and safety in travel and wisdom as she ministers in dangerous situations.
