Out of the darkness
Church of Ireland Cross

Chile Miners rescue drill I wonder if you have been following the story of the Chilean miners. Lost and trapped underground. For a number of days feared dead. Then found and now please God rescued. As I write this half of 33 miners trapped underground are now safely returned to the surface.

Rescue cylinderIt’s been a gripping story that has caught the attention of the whole world. It’s an incredible story of rescue filled with drama, fear and joy. What joy to be rescued! The emotional pictures of reunion are incredibly moving to see and many have stopped and prayed and given thanks to God.

Our Christian rescue story is also from darkness into light. Amazingly it’s an even greater story than that we’ve been witnessing in Chile on our T.V. screens. God’s Son Jesus came to rescue us, so that we could know the wonderful reunion of the Father’s love.

As we think about the Christian rescue it’s good to ask what from? We are not rescued from rock over 2000ft underground. Christians are rescued from the darkness of sin that pollutes our world and our lives. The message of sin isn’t a popular one. Many folk think they are not bad people or that they are good enough.

Unless we realise we are in a cave we are not going to seek a rescue! If we are good enough anyway why was the cross necessary?

Our sinfulness lies at the heart of the Christian message – the bible famously reminds us, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” It doesn't say them over there have sinned it says all. That's you and that's me. All have sinned. Yes it's not popular, but without seeing our sin the good news of Jesus is empty and meaningless. How can you be saved if you never needed rescue?

Of course the call of Christ is not simply one of rescue. It’s also one of helping us walk in his light. As some friends recently shared in a letter, ‘God still asks us the same questions: Do you love me? Are you following me? Are you satisfied alone in me? Do you trust me? When we think we have grown or can do something for God, He reminds us we can do nothing apart from Him.’ In short, are we living in his light?

Harvest Supper & Concert

Well once again we had a great turn out with almost standing room only. What a fun night for the church family in the midst of our harvest season. There were delightful contributions from pupils from Ballyconnell Central and Newtowngore schools while parishioners of all ages acted, sang, shared poetry and played music making it a great night. It was I think you will agree a splendid nights entertainment. A big thank you to all those who helped make the event such a success. Thank you to all the brave participants. Thank you to the schools for taking time to be with us. Thank you to the ladies for the food and tea and to those who prepared the hall for our use. THANK YOU.

SmileTime for a smile!

Out of the Mouth’s of Children 1
A teacher was giving a lesson on the circulation of the blood. Trying to make the matter clearer, she said, 'Now, class, if I stood on my head, the blood, as you know, would run into it, and I would turn red in the face.'
'Yes,' the class said.
'Then why is it that while I am standing upright in the ordinary position the blood doesn't run into my feet?'
A little fellow shouted, 'Cause your feet ain't empty.'

Out of the Mouth’s of Children 2
A little girl was talking to her teacher about whales.
WhaleThe teacher said it was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human because even though it was a very large mammal its throat was very small.
The little girl stated that Jonah was swallowed by a whale.
Irritated, the teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a human; it was physically impossible.
The little girl said, 'When I get to heaven I will ask Jonah'.
The teacher asked, 'What if Jonah went to hell?'
The little girl replied, 'Then you ask him'.

Out of the Mouth’s of Children 3
One day a little girl was sitting and watching her mother do the dishes at the kitchen sink. She suddenly noticed that her mother had several strands of white hair sticking out in contrast on her brunette head.
She looked at her mother and inquisitively asked, 'Why are some of your hairs white, Mum?'
Her mother replied, 'Well, every time that you do something wrong and make me unhappy, one of my hairs turns white.'
The little girl thought about this revelation for a while and then said, 'Mummy, how come ALL of grandma's hairs are white?'

Out of the Mouth’s of Children 4
A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her six year olds.
After explaining the commandment to 'honour' thy Father and thy Mother, she asked, 'Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?'
Without missing a beat one little boy (the oldest of a family) answered, 'Thou shall not kill.'
