Out of the fog!
Church of Ireland Cross

I remember a day walking with Pauline in mist and fog in the Yorkshire Dales. It never lifted all day and there were a few moments we felt lost and confused as we tried to make sense of the map and compass. Looking back on the last year it too felt a bit foggy. For a while that’s fine but if we stay in fog too long we can feel lost and confused.
PenticostWhether news of a new Rector is around the corner or a long way off we need to keep looking to Jesus for the way ahead. Easter reminds us that as God’s people our purpose is clear. We are to discover and share the Risen Lord.
How fitting this letter is likely printed on Ascension day when Jesus leaving his disciples told them,

“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you.
and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem,
and in Judea,
and in Samaria
and to the ends of the earth.”

This verse is so exciting and I really believe is a verse for us today in the Swanlinbar Kildallon Group. It is like a carpet that we can put down. On the different areas of this verse we can place the different parts that make up the life and witness of the church.
This verse highlights four different areas with very different needs. Each needs our witness to the risen Christ.

And you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem
Jerusalem was the worship centre for the Jews, home to the Temple. For us Jeruslaem would be the worshipping community, the regular church goers.

And you will be my witnesses in Judea
Judea was a land full of Jews by birth. For us Judea is made up of those who are largely church of Ireland or Protestant by birth. For all sorts of reasons many of these folk struggle to connect with the life of Christian faith. These include all ages but some clearly notable groups - young families, teenagers and adults in their 20’s and 30’s. There is a tremendous work for our group and as individual churches with these folk.

And you will be my witnesses in Samaria
Geese flying in formation Samaria was made up of the Samaritans - a people that the Jews had a long history with that was not always very good. It is a challenging reminder to us to look to share the risen Christ in our largely Catholic communities. We look to bless our neighbours with the love of Jesus. The shadow of history around this will inevitably raise issues that will vary hugely from Corrawallen to Kinawley, yet Christ‘s call remains.

And you will be my witnesses to the Ends of the Earth
The early Christians spread the message of the risen Christ to every corner of the known world. We help in this when we support Beryl Baker in the Chaco or raise funds for Christians in Haiti or here in Ireland for Church Army. The opportunities to be witnesses to the ends of the earth are incredible.
To be a healthy growing church I believe we are called to seek God’s heart and work in each of these 4 areas both as a group and as individual parishes.
We will first do this as a group. Quite simply there are some things we do better as a group. A day away with representatives from each parish will look our witness as a group with the carpet of Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, Ends of the Earth before them.
Just as importantly we need to look at this call to be witnesses in each of these areas as individual churches. We will make important time for this also in the days ahead.
The mission is clear - we are to discover and share the risen Lord. Working together we pray that the coming year will encourage us greatly as we seek God’s way ahead in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the earth.

Rev Brendan McCarthy

It’s great to have Rev Brendan McCarthy with us at the moment for a couple of days each week. Those of you with us at the Vision day would have heard Brendan share a little bit about his work with us through to the end of the summer. With us a couple of days a week Brendan will be doing a parish profile gathering information that will help us look at our life and help a new Rector too. At the vision day Brendan gave out some opinion finder questions. (Questions are on page 5 of the print version of the Newsletter and available for download and printing by clicking on this link:
www.swanlinbar-kildallon.kilmore.anglican.org/temp/opinion-finder-A4.pdf
You will need Adobe Reader which is available free here: http://get.adobe.com/reader/
If you didn’t get one or can not download one and would like to help there are extra copies in each of the churches. Completed forms (these do not need to have your name) may be left in vestries. Brendan and Richard will collect them when conducting services.
While he won’t manage to get to everyone Brendan will be trying to visit a number of folk across the group.

Opinion Finder

Brendan McCarthyI have been told that many people don't like surveys or questionnaires, so tongue-in cheek I have made out an 'Opinion Finder' instead!
This is really a simple way of helping me find out what you think and feel about some aspects of church life in the Swanlinbar and Kildallon Group of parishes. It is completely anonymous, there are no right or wrong answers and any comments that you may make will be treated with the utmost respect.
Sunday by Sunday parishioners dutifully listen to what preachers have to say from the pulpit. While, personally, I have been delighted by the willingness of people to respond to questions that I ask from the pulpit during my talks I am also aware that it is also good for those of us who preach simply to listen to what others have to say. The Opinion Finder is one way in which I can do this.
As the Swanlinbar and Kildallon group of parishes prepares for the future it is important that everyone's views are taken into account. Needs and concerns as well as hopes and opportunities ought to be identified.
Part of my role over the next few months is to meet with Select Vestries, Church Office-bearers, leaders and individuals to listen to what you have to say about your church. I am already aware of much life and spiritual energy and enthusiasm in this group of parishes. This is evidence of the excellent leadership abilities of your former rector, Geoff and of Richard who continues to put body and soul into everything that he does.
By the end of the summer I shall present a report, reflecting what you have told me and I hope that this will provide a really good springboard for future development. Rest assured that anonymity will be maintained, no one will be embarrassed and no opinion shall be dismissed.
I have greatly enjoyed the few weeks that I have been privileged to be with you so far and I am grateful for all that has been done to make me and my family feel welcome and comfortable when we are here over weekends. I look forward to working with you over the next few months and I am certain that, together, we can help the church prepare for the future.

Brendan .

BFU - the Contemporary Service with young people in mind.

A young person commented it was better than Sunday mornings!!
We had a great B-4-U service in Killeshandra last month and the monthly service continues its travels. It is next in Kilmore hall on Friday 28th at 8.45 pm. It was great to have a good number of young people at the last service. It would be brilliant if we can get even more folk in their teens and 20-30's to come along to the next one. Parents please do your part getting young people there and let's take every opportunity to encourage those who might struggle with Sunday mornings. .

Mission News

Dennis Johnston This is an email we received from Dennis Johnson a couple of days ago.

Dear Swanlinbar Kildallon Group,
Trust you are all well. I am forwarding an email from Beryl which is specifically for the churches in Kildallon and Swanlinbar group.
It was good to see so many of you back in March and to share in the service.
Thank you for all the support.
Warm regards
Denis

Dear Denis,
Many thanks for your ''e'' mail of March 12th which has only just been registered on my computer so I am very sorry that this message is far too late for the churches in Kildallon and Swanlinbar but perhaps you could convey by your reliable ''e'' mail how grateful I am for all their prayers and practical support. Without medicines I can't do much, except pray of course but those medicines bought with the funds that you all generously send are life savers and the message that goes with them is of course a soul saver.
Beryl BakerCurrent prayer points. Firstly praise that the Ministry of Health's services have improved so much and that food supplements are now arriving twice a month for people with T.B. and milk for undernourished children in the Chaco. More of the Indian Health Promoters have received government salaries and more have the promise of a salary in the future.
A Paraguayan lady called Tomasa is in hospital with renal failure and her prognosis is none too good. Her daughter, Graciela and son-in-law Silvino who are studying at a Bible School in town are able to visit her frequently and we pray that Tomasa will accept the Lord very soon.
I'm at present purchasing medicines to treat scabies. The children ,especially suffer so much not just from this very itchy skin infestation but from secondary bacterial illnesses caused by them scratching themselves with dirty fingernails. Soap is given as part of the treatment to ensure their clothes are freed from the eggs and larva of this unpleasant mini tick.
The middle part of the Chaco still needs a lot of rain. The lord answered everyone's prayers for ""out of season"" rain last year and we look to Him for his blessing this year.
At last the weather is very pleasant and everyone is very relieved that the extreme heat has now passed.
love and prayers,
Beryl

Trip to South America?

Trip to the Chaco 2011?Paraguay map

South AmeriacSams send teams of folk from Ireland to Paraguay every year. It might be we could send a team from our group to see Beryl in person. It would help our group of churches enormously to have some folk coming back sharing their experiences. Dennis Johnston tells me a team of six or eight would be great. Even if just one or two wanted to go they could link up with other teams. It’s something we need to be praying and thinking about over the next few months. We would have to let SAMS know in the autumn. If this is something that God might be putting on your heart please have a chat with Richard.

Her carer writes on her behalf:

Dear Swanlinbar and Kildallon Sunday school members.
I thank you for sending me this Christmas gift. May God bless you. Did you enjoy the Christmas? I have celebrated it with tatas (workers).
We played games, especially Biblical. We danced and sang to glorify the Lord.
When going home, tata gave me a nice present which rejoiced me.
Pray that the Lord to keep me in good health. See you soon.

Protestant Aid

In these difficult economic times we have correspondence from the Protestant Aid Fund for each parishioner. This letter should be in the envelope enclosed with this newsletter. Aware of the difficulties of this time for many families our Archbishops are asking those who are able to consider supporting Protestant Aid so that they can assist Protestant families in need through the local churches. I am very aware of a number of initiatives for funding presently and giving may not be appropriate for many folk. However if you can give without it effecting other important giving please consider doing so. Equally the letter also asks that "should you require Protestant Aid's help, please contact your local minister (Richard or Rev Steve Clark) to enable him to apply to the charity on your behalf for assistance."

Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. Is anyone sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. James 5:13-14
James reminds us to pray for the sick. Following this instruction there is a special service on the evening of Pentecost Sunday 23rd May. Rev Andrew Quill is leading a healing service in Teemore parish hall at 8pm. While it may not be in our group of parishes we are warmly invited.

Group United Service

United ServiceDue to a regrettable and most unfortunate clash in the Bishop's diary the date for the confirmation has had to be moved from May to June This does mean we will have two united services in consecutive weeks in June with the confirmation and Sunday School Prize giving. This is not ideal and can I make clear not our intended or preferred way of developing services in our group. In circumstance beyond our control I would ask for your understanding. These are both incredibly important services in the life of our group both now and looking to the future. Please give these days United Serviceyour wholehearted support.

The Confirmation Service will now be held on 6th June in Kildallon at 3 pm.

Vision Day

Geese flying in formationboy eating bar of chocholateThe Vision day was hugely encouraging. It was brilliant to have Rev Paul Hoey and Brendan assisting on the day and those present will not forget the geese!
Geese can teach us so much about working together as a team taking turns to lead and helping one another. Paul shared how even a little boy’s suggestion about taking gifts of chocolate to homes marked the turning point in the life of one church as they looked to grow. Every one of us has a key role to play. Honk Honk! If you missed out on the day we will try and fill you in over the next weeks and months. The geese and the vision won’t go away! On the left is a picture of the geese flying in formation and on the right the boy with a bar of chocolate.

Time for a smile! Smile

A Jewish lady named Mrs. Rosenberg who many years ago was stranded late one night at a fashionable resort - one that did not admit Jews. The desk clerk looked down at his book and said, "Sorry, no room. The hotel is full." The Jewish lady said, "But your sign says that you have vacancies." The desk clerk stammered and then said curtly, "You know that we do not admit Jews. Now if you will try the other side of town..."
Mrs. Rosenberg stiffened noticeable and said, "I'll have you know I converted to your religion." The desk clerk said, "Oh, yeah, let me give you a little test. How was Jesus born?"
Mrs. Rosenberg replied, "He was born to a virgin named Mary in a little town called Bethlehem." "Very good," replied the hotel clerk. "Tell me more." Mrs. Rosenberg replied, "He was born in a manger." "That's right," said the hotel clerk. "And why was he born in a manger?" Mrs. Rosenberg said loudly, "Because a jerk like you in the hotel wouldn't give a Jewish lady a room for the night!"
