The Journey of Lifecar

Many of you will know one of our cars was written off in an accident recently. Praise God no one was seriously hurt! The fortnight after was difficult as we looked to sort out getting a replacement. Our remaining car was much in demand and it was awkward juggling its use. Then the day before we were to go away this car too broke down in the centre of Ballyconnell - yes you know the tricky crossroads in the middle of town!
Rural living is great providing you've got transport! We are dependant on cars and being without even for a short while made me realise just how dependant we are. In this modern age we simply could not manage without cars. We are dependant upon them. It was something we took for granted until we went without.
It makes me think about our relationship with God. How dependant are we upon him?
Some folk seemingly manage live without God altogether. They have discounted his relevance and reality. Of course we live in a world which encourages independence and life can do without God.
For many others God is kind of there, but daily life goes on without him until a crisis, illness or death. Crisis makes us look at what we really need and depend upon. When they are forced to reassess what is important in life there is suddenly space for God in the picture.
Yet God is not like a bus or a taxi or ambulance to journey with only in emergency, breakdown or accident! There is so much more. The truth is we need to be totally dependant on our heavenly Father all the time. We need our creator even more than we need our cars to get through our daily living.
Over the years I have met some wonderful and incredibly attractive people. I have to say the lives I am most drawn to, the lives I find most attractive are those that seek to be totally dependant upon our heavenly Father all the time. To depend is to trust and so these wonderful folk trust God to lead them through life. They are some of the most joyful people I know yet have also been through the greatest trials of sacrifice and pain. Following Christ has not removed pain and difficulty - indeed it may have added to it, yet there is such depth, meaning and purpose in their lives.
Their shining examples help me realise I kid only myself when I try and get through life without God. He always welcomes us back yet I dishonor him if I only run to him in times of crisis and miss out on so much. There is so much more and our Lord is worthy of so much more - he gave everything for us. Life is too fleeting and shallow without him. We deceive ourselves when we think we can manage without him. In our journey of life, let’s make our lives count and depend on Him.

Seniors Grand Night Out!

Our Senior's Dinner Party will take place this year between 5.30 pm and 9.30 pm on Saturday 12th December in Ballyconnell parish hall. The feast will begin with soup and then a choice of roast beef or chicken with three vegetables and all the trimmings, topped off with a choice of three sweets and tea or coffee and more! If you weren't hungry you are now! This event is not to be missed. We encourage all our senior citizens from the whole group to come along. Transport will be provided for anyone that needs it and the whole evening will be free.
It would be great to get as many folk as possible involved in our ministry to the more senior members of our community. Here are some ways to help support our Senior's dinner;
You could perhaps provide some crackers to dress the table;
You could supply something like a box of chocolates or toiletries to be given as a gift on the day;
You could give a box of after dinner mints to be eaten with the tea / coffee;
You could make a gift of a bottle of fruit juice or some other soft drink. You could offer your car on the day to bring folk to the dinner, home from dinner or both!
A highlight last year was the dance after the meal. This was open to other parishioners not just our older members. Please help us make it a grand night out!

I am delighted to tell you we have some prayer cards for Beryl. These will be given out at our weekly prayer meetings. Additional cards will be provided in the churches. Please do take the opportunity to get one to help pray for Beryl and her work.
A few people have asked about donating glasses and blankets and warm hats to the work in the Chaco. SAMS hope to take a team next summer with the donated items so we will expect to start a collection nearer the time. One of united services before Easter will celebrate our mission link.

Edoh - the 6 year old Togo child that the Sunday school are supporting through the Christian Charity Compassion has also sent us a letter. (remember it takes a few months for us to get correspondence) Edoh lives in Togo between Ghana and Nigeria on the coast of Africa.
A helper writes on her behalf:
Dear Swanlinbar and Kildallon Sunday Schools, I am happy to send you this letter. The school days are over. The holiday has started since the 17th July. I am not happy because I failed at school. My aunt is not happy. I want to begin the school. I promise you that next year I will succeed. I will help my aunt during the holiday to sell rice, bread and sweets. Where will you spend the holiday? Pray for me to have a safe holiday. Edoh Clemence
Please pray that 6 year old Edoh will be able to reach and even exceed the standards required by her school in Togo.

During this time of vacancy I am delighted that we are able to have the range of services provided (See the back page of the Newsletter). Our thanks to visiting clergy for enabling this. I am though aware that some churches will not have a service. Whether or not we are still in vacancy, I hope that these will receive priority when we look at our Easter arrangements.
A highlight last year was our nativity service on Christmas Eve when the congregation joined in the drama of the night. It is a service we hope to have again. If anyone has sewing gifts that they would like to contribute or cloth materials suitable for nativity costumes (for children and adults!) please do have a word with me. Richard

Sustentation / Free Will Offerings

We really value the gifts of all our parishioners and friends of the various Parishes in our group - without your giving the work of the Church would not be possible. Once again can we gently encourage people to ensure that their offerings are with the various Parish Treasurers by the last Sunday of the year, ie 27th December - ideally the Sunday before - 20th December. If we can comply with this request then the Treasurers will have opportunity to bank your gifts before 31st December, the end of the financial year. This will enable us to produce a set of accounts based on the balance in the account at that date.
We are also greatly appreciative of the work of our various money counters, recorders and the parish treasurers, and would ask you to get your gifts to them rather than them having to come to you, a task which is difficult, time consuming and embarrassing for all concerned. Unfortunately, if your gift has not been lodged by the 31st December then it will not appear in the 2009 accounts. This is in accordance with new Charities legislation that tightens our recording procedures. Once again though, a huge thank you for your support in giving to the Church.

Safeguarding Trust

In the next month I hope to put a few folk through the Safeguarding Trust checks, so what is Safeguarding Trust all about?
Each week thousands of children use church of Ireland premises for worship and other activities like Sunday school, youth organisations and clubs. We have a Christian duty and legal responsibility to be sure they are protected from all kinds of abuse and also to promote their general safety and welfare.
Our children's ministry is only possible because of the commitment of adults who are prepared to work with children. They need the safeguard of guidelines which help them feel confident that their practices are good and that they are protected from unfounded allegations.
Safeguarding Trust provides such assurance for children and leaders in our church. It may sometimes seem a nuisance in administration and time but it is a vital resource for all those working with children in our church. It is also a public statement of the Church's concern for the care and protection of children and leaders.

Remembrance Sunday

If you worshipped at Tomregan or Kinawley Churches this morning I wonder how many of you thought of the names on the plaques commemorating the fallen soldiers and sailors. Have you ever thought of the people behind those names?
Each name is a precious life, we Christians believe. Each name reminds us – as it should – of the brutality of war and of the dignity of sacrifice.
Like with other such memorials I find myself unwittingly captivated, wanting to stray over each name and touch it, to connect with the sacrifice it represents. In what circumstances did they lay down their life? Was it heroic or banal? Or like the poet Wilfred Owen, who having been awarded the Military Cross was killed just a matter of days before the Armistice in 1918; was it like that a tragic death? What did they feel ? How were their family told?
The Island of Ireland Peace Park at Messines in Belgium is a place of simplicity, a place of tranquility. A path leads to a round tower, beside the path there are inscribed standing stones and stone slabs set into the ground. Along with the memorials recording in stark terms the suffering of the three Irish Divisions, there are recorded selections of words from those present.
The words include lines from two Irish war poets: Tom Kettle, the politician, economist, writer and journalist, who died in September 1916 and Francis Ledwidge, the peasant poet from Co Meath commemorated in Seamus Heaney’s “In Memoriam F E Ledwidge”, who died at the end of July in the following year.
Ledwidge’s words are the concluding lines of his “Soliloquy”,

    • It is too late now to retrieve
      a fallen dream, too late to grieve
      a name unmade, but not too late
      to thank the gods for what is great:
      a keen-edged sword, a soldier’s heart
      is greater than a poet’s art.
      and greater than a poet’s fame
      a little grave that has no name.

In the nearby town of Ypres, there is a nightly ceremony at the Menin Gate. Last Post is sounded at 8 pm, followed by the reading of Laurence Binyon’s “Ode to the Fallen” and then the Silence before the sounding of Reveille. The Menin Gate is a stone arch upon which are engraved 54,896 names of those Commonwealth soldiers who fell in the battlefields around Ypres and who have no known grave. Fifty thousand names cover a lot of space.
Let us Never Forget those who fought for us, so many of whom gave their lives to keep us free from Oppression and Tyranny. Lord, help us remember them.
The above is edited from A sermon preached in Salisbury by Canon June Osborne in November 2005 and a sermon for Sunday 8th November 2009 by Ian Poulton in Dublin..

Family Bible

  Ancient Relics

Visiting his grandparents, a small boy opened the big family Bible. He was fascinated as he fingered through the old pages. Suddenly, something fell out. He picked it up and found that it was an old leaf that had been pressed flat between the pages. "Mama, look what I found," he called out.
"What have you got there, dear?" his mother asked."
With astonishment in his voice, the boy answered, "I think it's Adam's underwear!"

Church of Ireland Cross   Prayer Points for the rest of November & early December  Church of Ireland Cross

Let us continue to listen to God in prayer and develop a daily routine of praying for the following on the day of the week indicated;

Sunday:
For our lives to be given wholly in worship to God. That God would continue to transform our hearts to follow him;
Monday:
For a new Rector for our group. That God would be preparing the person of his choosing. We also pray for our neighbours Rev Andrew Quill, wife Joanna and three children as they settle into their new home and church family;
Tuesday:
For the work of the Forward Group as they help support our growth as a church family. For renewed purpose in Christ and continued growth as a team through change;
Wednesday:
For all those struggling with illness and those who care for them. We pray especially for those who are receiving cancer treatments at this time;
Thursday:
For those who have been killed or injured in conflicts around the world, particularly those involved in peace keeping duties. May lives not be wasted, rather ways be found for each sacrifice to truly help make this world a better place;
Friday:
For families preparing for Christmas. That they would not be trapped by the financial pressures and hype. May the coming season be a time of real spiritual depth and meaning in the midst of the business;
Saturday:
For Beryl Baker in the Chaco region of Paraguay. For her health and safety in travel and wisdom as she ministers in dangerous situations.
