Different Lenses<empty>Glasses

Those of you who use glasses will be aware what a difference the lenses make. Different Lenses give you an entirely different view!
Many of you will know my wife Pauline’s parents visited us for three weeks recently. It was their first visit to Ireland coming from hot and sunny Malaysia. I am thrilled to say they hope to come again! I was fascinated by the differences they observed as they compared our way of living with their own. Yes the weather was different and very cold! It took courage to leave the house even during our grand warm September spell. They had to adjust to short trips being 10-30 minutes to get anywhere instead of 2 minutes in town living. They struggled with the cost of things even in the north. They saw our homes and were shocked at our wealth and possessions, for example the toys the children had, not understanding how we scrimp and save. Malaysia is a modern country and my in laws are not poor, yet they thought we lived like dukes! Of course my parents in law had never met a duke, but coming from such a different place they looked at our world as though through a very different set of lenses.
We may not recognise it. It is so easy to always compare our lives with others who have more, yet materially we are so rich. Materially it is true we are so rich when compared to the majority in our world and it is only by grace that we are born in relative wealth and not crippling poverty.
Many poor families would regard things like a T.V. as essential. In other parts of the world this would be an amazing luxury! How grateful are we for what we have?
How good it is then that we as a group are taking active steps to involve ourselves personally with folk in Paraguay. Through Beryl Baker our SAMS link we want to help make a real difference in the lives of folk who have much less than us. Our recent missionary meeting with SAMS (details page 4 & 5) was brilliant though in truth it might have been better supported. It really helped encourage us with new ways in which we can practically support their work. If you missed the meeting it’s not too late. Make sure you catch up so that we get as involved as we can in changing lives very different to our own.
Of course the greatest change we long to see here and abroad are lives knowing and following Jesus. Our practical care is a sign that our talk of a Saviour Jesus who is interested in lives is real. Jesus fed the hungry miraculously but pointed to a greater need - himself! As Myrtle our harvest speaker in Ballyconnell reminded us Jesus is the everyday vital food we need for our lives.

Prayer Meetings Change with the Weather!

With the weather likely to change making driving a little more hazardous through the winter months we are looking to make some small but significant changes to our weekly prayer meetings.
While folk may travel to different parts of the group to pray we will halt that expectation for now. Instead the emphasis will be on the local folk to each prayer meeting supporting their meeting. In order to make these meetings a priority they will all be in the evening. The change to evenings may make it easier for folk to come even if you may have never been to any of the previous meetings.
This will sharpen us in our prayer as we will pray more specifically for our individual churches, our lives and mission sharing Christ in our local communities.
Our local prayer meetings start in November. Meetings will still be quite informal in nature with refreshments to start. Everyone will be very welcome. We will continue this pattern through November and 1st part of December and then review how we are doing.

Great News

It was a joy to hear that the vacant parish of Derrylin is to be vacant no longer! I am sure you would join me in expressing delight in welcoming Rev Andrew Quill, his wife Joanna and children as our neighbours. Andrew and the family will arrive in November. Meanwhile we also continue to pray for our nominators and our own longing for a new Rector- the person of God‘s choosing in God‘s time.

Missionary Meeting
SAMS logo Dennis Johnston

What a great evening! It was a real delight to have Dennis returning to share with us. He also brought a colleague, Moira Lindsay (photo left & teaching sewing below) who saw Beryl this summer in Paraguay! Moira has visited Paraguay three times and shared a presentation of her last visit. Her visit to Beryl was only a small part of her visit so we got a real glimpse of SAMS work in Paraguay. Moira went out with a team that were involved in a number of different projects. These included teaching basic sewing skills, running children's clubs, helping people who needed glasses and helping repair some homes.
We discovered more about Beryl. A great disciple who lives a lonely life as she is in such a remote place in the Chaco. Her medicine which we have helped provide is vital to so many. Even in hospital you have to buy all your own medicines including things like needles and tubes! She is presently hoping to train someone to take her role on in the next few years. Beryl has already been in the Chaco some 30 years!
We discovered some practical ways to help that we can co-ordinate in the future
Collecting blankets. To my surprise it can be very cold in Paraguay in their winter (our summer!).
Collecting old glasses. Glasses are often beyond the means of many of the local people - our throwaways a real gift! These can be taken by visiting SAMS teams next year.
A thought for the future? It would be fantastic if one or more individuals wanted to join a team visiting Paraguay with SAMS - perhaps in 2010/2011. Teams usually are away for about three weeks. We might visit Beryl for a couple of days as part of the trip a she is so isolated.
Dennis also presented each church with a certificate thanking us for our support of Beryl. This will be on display in each of our churches as a reminder of this precious link.
We may not all have made the meeting for whatever reason but please don’t miss out in involving yourself in any way you are able. Let us make our link with Paraguay the very best!

Confirmation 2010

Just a reminder about confirmation preparation. A number of parents asked about it before the summer. Richard is just double checking and making sure no one is left out. Please speak to him if you have not done so already this autumn.
Also let's not assume confirmation is only for teenagers. If you are an adult and were not confirmed but would like to explore confirmation for yourself please let Richard know. Adult preparation would be separate from the teenagers.

Harvest Collection

Many thanks to everyone who has given so generously to our harvest collection for the work of the Church Army. The total collected is approximately €2323. I know it will greatly appreciated. I hope that the visit of Church Army folk may have helped us understand a bit more about their work with those in the church and those very much on the fringe who do not know the love of Jesus.

Harvest Supper & Concert

Well once again we had a great turn out with almost standing room only. What a fun night for the church family in the midst of our harvest season. There were delightful contributions from pupils from Ballyconnell Central and Newtowngore schools while parishioners of all ages acted, sang, shared poetry making it a great night. While we might have had slightly fewer acts this year it remained a splendid nights entertainment. A big thank you to all those who helped make the event such a success. Thank you to all the brave participants. Thank you to the schools for taking time to be with us. Thank you to the Mothers Union for the food and tea and to those who prepared the hall for our use. THANK YOU. So start planning your contributions for next year?!!

Lesson in Lying

A minister told his congregation, "Next week I plan to preach about the sin of lying. To help you understand my sermon, I want you all to read Mark 17."
The following Sunday, as he prepared to deliver his sermon, the minister asked for a show of hands. He wanted to know how many had read Mark 17. Every hand went up. The minister smiled and said, "Mark has only sixteen chapters. I will now proceed with my sermon on the sin of lying."
