John Denver penned a song in the sixties (I think) and the opening line went as follows “Gee, its good to be back home again!” I always look forward to going away for a break, but I’m not away for too long when I feel drawn back home once more. I had a great time on retreat in the mountains of Arizona. At 6000ft above sea level meant that the oxygen was thin and with temperatures around 115ºF during the day and 30ºF at night, it was a challenging experience physically. But one of the great things about the weekend was the fact that it gave me a great opportunity to spend time in solitude and do some much-needed reading.

At the end of my retreat, I had one day to do a bit of sight-seeing. We drove to the Grand Canyon and I walked on the Sky Walk, a glass walkway built out over the edge of the Canyon. They say that it could bear the weight of four 747 jets and that it can withstand an earthquake – at least that is what our tour guide told us. But when you are out there on the platform looking straight down 1000ft through a glass walkway, you forget all those things you have been told and just hold on to the nearest handrail for fear of falling!! A totally irrational fear yet it was completely paralyzing until I actually managed to edge my way into the middle of the walkway and trust the glass beneath my feet.

Embracing change can be a similar experience, as we cling to the things which we know have served us well in the past and continue to put our trust in them without really considering whether they will still offer the support they once did. But there comes a time when we have to let go of some of these things and walk boldly into our fear and trust that as we do so the fear will subside and our journey will be enriched.

As we continue to embrace change in our Group of Parishes, I am massively encouraged by the way in which many folk have embraced change readily. Others have embraced changes less enthusiastically, but paradoxically, no less supportively. In this whole process of change, it is crucial for all of us to talk about our experience of change, and to share our encouragements and challenges. It is also important for all of us to listen to one another.
As we continue to move Forward! I would encourage us all to do so reflecting on what the changes are all about. Are they simply just for the sake of change? Or are they responding to a world which increasingly sees little relevance in the church and where Christian moral standards are gradually being eroded?

Kidz Club

Our kidz club meets for the last time before the summer break on Sunday June 22nd from 3.30 pm to 5 pm. These are a key part of our children’s work that builds on the great work of the Sunday school. Alternating with Ballyconnell, this month we will meet in Newtowngore
Parish hall. Kidz club will be back again in September. May I take this opportunity in writing to thank Avril and Carol for their help leading and parents for your help getting the kids there.

 

Champion’s Challenge - Children’s Bible club

Monday to Friday 18th -22nd August.
My first contact with Church Army was 31 years ago at a holiday club!
While it was not life changing, I only remember positive things about it. It was a real highlight in the summer holidays!

This year we are having our holiday Club in Newtowngore Parish Hall
This five day Bible Club will take place 10-12 noon each day.
There’s a sports theme to our club this year as we explore some key stories from Jesus’ life and ministry. There will be fun, drama, games, craft, puzzles, songs and more.

It has been difficult choosing dates for the club this year. It seems there is a fair amount on for kids in July locally, so we’ve gone later when the kids are looking for things to do? (or parents are looking for things for them to do!) Providing you are not away on holidays please support this valuable work with the children.

Parents please help your children come along.
We can all pray for the work, that it would be God centred sharing Jesus. We want the kids to have a wonderful time discovering Jesus. Holiday clubs can sow seeds of faith for the rest of their lives.
Why not help with refreshments - it’s a great way to see the fun.
Help spread the word that the club is on.

Prayer meetings this summer

The prayer meetings across the group continue to be a joyful step forward in faith.
As well as our time of prayer they have been really great for helping folks to get to know one another better. Although we know some folks will be away through the summer, our corporate prayer will continue. Even if you've not been before why not drop in to one. You are all very welcome.

Growing leaders – A course which does exactly what it says on the tin!

Much is said in the world we live about the need for leadership, whether it be at local, national or world level. Everyone has something to say about leadership and whether it is effective or otherwise. Leadership in the church is no less subject to comment than any other area of life, indeed perhaps more so! But how are we facing up to the challenges of enabling existing leaders and encouraging emerging leaders in our Group of Parishes. Well, we intend to invest in our leaders through a course provided by the Church Pastoral Aid Society entitled Growing Leaders. In the introduction to the course the co-authors cite 6 reasons which have influenced the creation of the course;

1. Leadership at every level is one of the key factors in growing healthy churches. It isn’t the only factor, but it is a crucial one. Leaders shape the church for good or bad. Initial research findings of the Natural Church Development Network indicate that “empowering leadership” is consistently the lowest-graded characteristic of English churches.
2. People recognize the “world is undergoing a major leadership shift” with a corresponding need for a “new kind of leadership” (Leighton Ford). The report Mission-shaped Church calls for the “development of leaders” as a priority in the life of every diocese. Chris Edmundson, Warden at Lee Abbey, concludes his analysis of the temperature of the church saying, “Fresh imaginative leadership will be required and will need resources.”
3. Christians in leadership roles throughout society need resources so that they may show and share the distinctives of Godly leadership.
4. Most denominations face a declining number of “professional ministers” and increasingly rely on lay people to take on leadership responsibilities.
5. We’ve yet to go a church where the overall leader says: “We’ve got so many leaders we don’t know what to do with them.” We often hear the opposite: “How can I find more people to take a lead?”
6. There is a great deal of confusion about what a leader is and how one develops leadership in a Christian context.

Leadership matters in our church so it is our intention to invest in a group of people already exercising a leadership role and identify some with the qualities to become leaders at some stage in the future.
The course itself will run on a monthly basis with ten sessions over a 12 month period. 8 of the sessions will be evening, lasting 2 hours and hosted in Ballyconnell Parish Hall. The remaining 2 sessions will be more extended, lasting 24 hours each, involving an overnight stay in a nearby guest house/hotel. There will be no charge for the course as we are actually seeking to affirm folk in the role they already hold and invest in them so that they might become more effective in their particular realm of leadership.
We will be hosting a taster event on Thursday 19th June at 8.30pm in Ballyconnell Minor Hall. If anyone is interested in the course then please contact Geoff for a chat about it and what is involved rather than just turning up on the night, but please note that this is not some form of extended Bible study but rather an intentional use of a tool to grow our church.

Ice Cream Party       Ice cream cone

A huge thank you is due to the PTA for Ballyconnell Central National School for all of the work and preparation which went into arranging the ice cream party on Saturday 24th May. It was a brilliant day for the large crowds which came and took part in all the fun of the day. Even passing motorists were able to enjoy the ice cream as sliders and cones were distributed to everyone who passed by. The total raised on the day was an amazing €2000 which will all go to the Down Syndrome Association Ireland. Thank you to everyone who supported the event in any capacity.

The Board of Management are pleased to announce the appointment of Ms Sabrina Faulkner (Killafinta, Ballyjamesduff) as Principal Teacher effective from 1st Sept 2008.
This appointment has come about following the recent announcement of the forthcoming retirement of Mrs Joan Patterson.

Girls’ Friendly Society

Last month the GFS took part in the Diocesan GFS Sports Day, held at Moyne Vocational School. It was a great afternoon with games that will stir many readers memories! Girls took part in running, 3 legged races, sack races and the tricky egg and spoon race. Well done to everyone who took part!.

Coffee morning for Bethany Wilson

Bethany will be travelling with a group from Ardess Parish, Clogher Diocese to China, between 25th June and 11th July 2008. During their time in, they will be working with children in a orphanage, showing them love of God in a very practical way.If you like to support Bethany, then you can do so by attending a fundraising coffee morning on Wednesday 18th June 2008 between 10am and midday in the Old School House, Swanlinbar.

The children kept insisting that they would take full responsibility for a dog if they were allowed to have one. Mother, however had other ideas.

“Remember the hamster,” she said. “You promised you’d feed it and clean out its cage. But what happened? How many times would that hamster have died if I hadn’t given if food and water?”
“Once?” hazarded the youngest innocently!

How to stop the Church Gossip, Mavis

Mavis, the church gossip, and self-appointed monitor of the church’s morals, kept sticking her nose into other people’s business. Several members did not approve of her extra-curricular activities, but feared her enough to maintain their silence.
Mavis made a mistake, however, when she accused Frank, a new member, of being an alcoholic after she saw his car parked in front of the town’s only bar one afternoon. She emphatically told Frank (and several others) that everyone seeing it there would know what he was doing.
Frank, a man of few words, stared at her for a moment and just turned and walked away. He didn’t explain, defend or deny… he said nothing.
Later that evening, Frank quietly parked his car in front of Mavis’s house … walked home … and left it there all night!!!

New Birth

Congratulations to Wendy & Tom Munroe, of Dundrum, Dublin on the recent birth of their first child, Ava Jennifer.
