Church of Ireland Cross

Your call is important to us, please wait while we try to connect you! Have any of you ever heard those words as you have telephoned somewhere and had to wait forever to get to speak to a living person. Just recently I had to ring a premium rate number as I am planning a trip abroad. After over 7 minutes of hearing how important my call was at €2.50 a minute I was totally frustrated and fed up with waiting and actually felt like throwing the phone down. It wasn’t just the waiting that frustrated me, it was the cost and also what I could have been doing while I was hanging on the end of a phone waiting for a call queue to reduce. Life involves a lot of waiting and in today’s world we are not good at it. As we heard from Rico Tice in our Autumn course “Christianity Explored”, we like instant coffee, instant credit and instant food. No time for waiting in our world today. But as I write these notes a few days after the Ascension, that is exactly what Jesus told his disciples to do.

In the opening chapter of Acts, while Jesus was staying with the Apostles, “he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” (Acts 1: 4-5 English Standard Version) The waiting was necessary for two reasons. Firstly, the apostles needed to wait because it was a command of Jesus, and being a follower of Jesus calls for obedience to his words and way of life. Secondly, it was necessary because there was someone coming at the end of the period of waiting who would make the wait worthwhile and equip them for service and ministry. Of course as you all read these notes, in the church calendar the wait has just ended as we have marked Pentecost and the coming of the Holy Spirit. This is who Jesus referred to when he uttered his command to wait. The Holy Spirit came and transformed that early group of followers of Jesus and it is because of them and their patience and obedience that you are reading about Jesus today. But waiting was an essential part of the equation.

The temptation for me would have been to just get on with it rather than waiting. After all, look at all the work we could get done while we were waiting. Perhaps we could convince ourselves that Jesus would be pleased with us for using our initiative and getting on with the mission of telling a lost world about a wonderful Saviour. But the wait was important because it showed obedience and commitment to Jesus’ words and teaching but it also culminated in a wonderful baptism in the Holy Spirit which equipped those early Christians for a mission which would result in many of them losing their lives. That would not have been possible without God fulfilling his promise and the faithfulness of the people.

As I hunger to see more people making life-changing decisions for Jesus, I am greatly encouraged by this passage. I’m encouraged that waiting can be part of the process of blessing. As we wait for transformation in our churches, let us be both obedient to the Word of God and allow it to shape our lives through the power of the Holy Spirit and let us hold to the promise that God will build His church.

What is a Church Army Officer?

The sun is shining (at last!) and I'm finding my feet in this beautiful land. Thank you everyone who has helped the Beadle family settle here. I am aware that some of you have never heard of the Church Army before so here is a very short summary! Church Army was founded by an Anglican minister, Wilson Carlile in the 1880s.
It grew out of a desire to see the church reaching people it didn't usually reach the homeless, the poor, those in prison, the marginalised. Over 125 years on Church Army officers work throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland. Nowadays Church Army are at the forefront of helping the church discover new ways to make Jesus real in the lives of people who often have never heard of Jesus in a positive way. Some work in established churches, others in very new places where the church has not been seen.
Our motto is "Sharing faith in words and action." There is a quarterly Church Army magazine 'Share it', and prayer diary which helps give a far better guide to the work than my few words. If you would like to get one please just let me know. I'd be delighted to get you one!
My own work here looks to help support, encourage the work of the group in seeing our lives filled with Jesus. A key task (but not the only task!) will be developing the work with children and young families. I long to see the church grow, our lives changed as Jesus becomes more rooted in our lives.
A final thought. I am not ordained and am not training to be ordained. I may be confused with Rectors and curates but I shall remain a Church army officer. I'm not planning to get ordained. One is not better - they are just different roles in God's kingdom. I am licensed by the Bishop as a Church Army Evangelist. My licensing in Killdallon Church in January included these vital ingredients:
A commitment to Jesus - without him I've nothing to share
A commitment to evangelism - to help people become disciples of Jesus
A commitment to service - to share the compassion of Jesus.
A commitment to learning and worship - to continue to grow in Jesus.
I can't think of a better starting point and let's see where God leads! My work will have a different emphasis to a curate, I bring different gifts, training and life experience to the table which I pray will help enrich the life of our church and team.

Kidz Club

Ask many parents and they would recognise the importance of Sunday school in the nurturing of faith in their children. The Sunday school is incredibly important. Yet for all the wonderful creative work of so many of our faithful Sunday School leaders, the small numbers of children and size of the rooms used are limiting factors in what can be achieved. Kidz club seeks to build on the faith filled building blocks of our Sunday School, not replace it.
It makes the most of space of our halls with noise and creativity that would not presently be possible on a Sunday morning. It also unites us as children from across the group meet together whether in Ballyconnell or Newtowngore hall.
April saw Kidz Club meet for the first time in Newtowngore. We had a great time looking at God's creation with games, songs and a feast of food. God made some wonderful fruit and in truth we were fairly spoilt!
As you read this we are back in Ballyconnell for our Kidz club Pentecost Celebration on the 11th May (the Sunday this newsletter is distributed). Our June meeting is a week later 22nd - due to the Sunday School prize giving on Sunday June 15th.
We will then have a well earned rest for July and August. Our September meeting will return to Ballyconnell as our monthly Kidz club alternates between the two venues. Please continue to support this essential work.
Next Meeting 3.30pm -5pm Sunday 22nd June Newtowngore hall

Pentecost

Prayer

Remember the boat - 2 oars - praying and working hard at the same time.
I have been overjoyed to see the start of our weekly prayer meetings this month. I really do believe missing it is missing out! As I've said before, few of us are very confident in prayer. I think we all feel inadequate yet God is so encouraging! I know some felt that hosting a prayer meeting or going along to one was new and risky, a "stepping out of the boat moment", yet God has been so good to us. We have chatted, laughed and joked over tea or coffee. We have listened to songs that help us give thanks to God and we have prayed - sometimes out loud if we felt able - sometimes in the quiet of our hearts. We have prayed for our concerns from news on the TV to families, friends and church. It's amazing how quickly the hour flies in!
So there will continue to be a prayer meeting in a home somewhere in the group each week. Times and days will vary so as many people as possible can join in this crucial work of prayer. Come along if you possibly can even if it may be very new to you. Everyone is very welcome.

Here are the next dates.
Tuesday 13th May 8.30 pm Templeport at Abraham & Carol Graham's home.
Tuesday 20th May 10.30 am Kinawley at Mackie & Vi Breen's home.
Wednesday 28th May 3 pm Killdallon at Valerie’s (next to Kildallon Rectory)
Dates & venues for the next Corrawallen / Newtowngore & Ballyconnell to be confirmed
Finally thank you once again to all who have offered their homes.

Bereavements

Cross

We extend our sincere sympathies to Carrie Howden and Robert Hassard on the loss of a sister and to Sylvia Breen on the loss of her father. All of them had reached a good age but the sense of loss is no less painful. May each of you know the comfort God brings those who grieve and mourn through His Holy Spirit.

Death of Mrs Talbot

And it is with sadness that I inform folk of the death of Mrs Rita Talbot. Rita was the wife of the late Dean Talbot who ministered in the Parishes of Swanlinbar and Templeport. She was a popular woman and will be sadly missed by many people. She passed away peacefully at her home in Abbeyleix, Co Laois in October 2007.

Sunday School Prize Giving and Group BBQ

Make a note in your diary, hide your umbrella and get your sun cream ready!! Sunday the 15th June 2008 will be the day of our Sunday School Prize giving service and Group BBQ. As promised last year, the service will held in the Parish Church Kildallon at 3.00pm and then followed by a Group BBQ and fun day for our children, including a bouncy castle at the Rectory in Kildallon.
Anyone who attended last year’s service and BBQ, I think would agree that it was a great afternoon and a nice way of thanking our children for their commitment to Sunday School throughout the year – it was also a great opportunity for the adults to chat and catch up from they last saw one another.
Over the course of the last year, a great deal of time, money and effort has been spent in refurbishing the Rectory in Kildallon and both Richard and Pauline are only too delighted to open their home in this way and say thank you to everyone concerned.
This service and BBQ is another way in which we can build the body through fellowship. Someone commented to me very recently that there is a greater sense of fellowship in our church, a comment which I find very encouraging. Please do come along on the day and be part of that fellowship as we seek to build the kingdom of God and move Forward together.
There will be no charge whatsoever for this as our Forward steering group have spent wisely and are in a position to subsidise this particular venture. Please do make a big effort to travel the extra distance to support the children on this important day. This will be the only service in our Group that day.

Swanlinbar Parish Outing

This is an annual event in the calendar for Swanlinbar Parish, but is open to everyone in our Group and indeed beyond. In previous years, a coach-load of folk have gone to Blanchardstown, Rosses Point & Sligo, Cultra & Bangor. This year, the plan is to head for Coleraine and Portrush. It will be possible for people to take in a bit of shopping in Coleraine and also Portrush, or to simply go to one location or the other. The outing will be on Saturday 31st May and the cost will be £8 / €10.50 (more details regarding pick-up points to follow in weekly News Sheets). Anyone wishing to go should contact Mary Thornton on 048 6634 8662 as soon as possible as the coach fills on a first come, first served basis with no preference given to anyone.

Swanlinbar Kildallon Group Youth Fellowship

I was a bit disappointed with the numbers at our last meeting of Youth Fellowship – 3 young people turned up. But I do want to thank those who did come as we had what I would honestly consider to be the best night so far! People often comment in parishes that there is nothing for young people, but then when there is something for young ones it may not always be well supported. I would encourage parents with secondary aged children to consider bringing them along on a Sunday evening. The program varies with a movie night, a games night and a Bible night each month – something for everyone! It meets on the 1st, 3rd, 4th & 5th Sunday of each month between 6.30pm & 8.30pm in Ballyconnell Parish Hall. Everyone is most welcome to attend.

Thanks from Gill & David Heyworth

Just a line to say a most sincere thank you to everyone we have met over the last 6 months and who have made us feel so welcome in such a short time. We enjoyed the services at Ballyconnell, Templeport and Newtowngore - we never managed to attend at the other churches. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers as you move forward in your plans for the Parishes, so that they thrive and grow. We will take with us very many happy memories of Cavan, the people and the beautiful countryside - a real taste of rural Ireland - we know it will stand us in good stead in rural France.     Thank you from us both,         Gill & David

New Birth

Congratulations are in order on the occasion of another arrival in the Hewson household, Ballinamore. Lorna had another little boy, well quite a big boy actually, as Alastair was born on Tuesday morning weighing in at 8lbs 14ozs. We wish every blessing upon both Ivan and Lorna as they now nurture Holly, Andrew and Alastair and provide a safe, loving environment in which they might grow and develop.

Swanlinbar - Kildallon Group Office

By the time you read this, the computers will be in situ, the copier in place and the admin assistant will have commenced her work DV. We welcome Phyl Canty to our team. Phyl is originally from England, having moved to Corlough around 2 years ago – she worships in Templeport Parish Church. Her interests include reading and horses and she has a lovely Labrador called Tatum. We all wish you well Phyl as you adjust to working in a new context and get to grips with Geoff’s little quirks.

New School

McGovern’s really have made an excellent start to our new school in Ballyconnell, ably assisted by Adam and Kenneth as our photos show at the cutting of the sod on 18th April. You would not recognise the site now, it’s completely cleared and the concrete foundations should be poured by the time you read this.

Please do keep praying for safety for all involved in this work as a building site can be an extremely dangerous place. Watch this space each month as we give you regular updates on the building progress.
