Riding Waves!

Church of Ireland Cross

May I begin by wishing you all a happy New Year. It’s certainly been a wet and very blowy start to the year! Like me you’ve probably been looking at the news reports on the coasts of Ireland and the U.K. Some of the pictures really have been quite amazing. I have been in awe at the power of the sea as pictures have shown it’s destructive might. Even cliffs have come crashing down and well known landscapes have been changed forever.
Stormy weatherAs a child I lived by the sea, both in Cornwall and in Kent. I was always in awe of it’s beauty and might. Of course living near the sea you are aware also of its dangers and the thrill of risks. Running through waves splashing over promenades was part of my childhood, smaller than those we just witnessed I add .
In the U.K. police have appealed to people not to go too close to the sea. Life is in danger. Some keen to take the best photographs have found themselves in danger. There have been rescues and lives have been lost.
In the midst of some of the most dangerous and powerful storms in my lifetime I am amazed today to learn that there are some adventurous Americans flying over to take advantage of these rare conditions. Conditions we describe as terrible, they look upon as perfect. They are surfers and this is an incredible opportunity! They want to make the most of it, even if it means surfing in the middle of a great storm.
I am reminded of words of wisdom that I once heard about our Christian faith. It takes a lot of energy and hard work to make waves. Surfers don’t make waves. They are never instructed in wave building. They are taught to surf waves as long as possible. They surf them. They work to a point. They swim out to the wave. Then they let the wave do the work. Their joy to hang on for the ride!
Surfing the big ones!Perhaps the most important task a Christian leader can undertake is to discern what The Spirit of God is doing. He’s the one who makes the waves!
Can we as God’s people and John and I as leaders see where God is at work in our locality.
Can we be equipped and encouraged to ride waves – to join in work that God is already doing, or about to do?
I am reminded of Paul’s letter to the Church in Corinth, where Paul shared about growth and the role we play. “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow.” (1 Corinthians 3:6)
We want to grow. Only God will make things really grow.
I hope and pray that in the coming months we will be equipped and encouraged further in God’s ways of working.
You might want to pray with me
.

Dear heavenly Father
Help your people in the Swanlinbar Kildallon group of Parishes to see how best we can serve you. May Jesus servant of all be our teacher.

From the youngest to the oldest may we feel loved by you.
May we know what it is to be dependent upon you.
Offering our gifts, may we know the joy of being used by you.
Give us eyes to see opportunities of your making, for only you can make things grow.
Help us Lord to be co-workers in the building of your Kingdom here in this place.
Led by your Holy Spirit, may we be encouraged and equipped in the coming year of 2014 we pray. Amen

Bereavements
Cross

We are very aware that for some of our families the New Year has been a painful time. It has been difficult to say goodbye to two parishioners whose presence in our midst will be missed greatly and were loved greatly by family and friends. Sarah Smyth (from Swanlinbar Parish) and Sandy Berry (Kildallon) were both great keen participants in Parish life. We also offer our sympathy to Joan Brooks and Evelyn Foster and their families following the death of their mother Gretta Keyes, who was buried in Drumlane on Christmas Eve.

A reading from 1 Peter 1:3-9 read at Sarah’s funeral encourages us as it shares of eternity. Peter speaks of new birth into a living hope, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead and goes on to speak of “an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade - kept in heaven for you.” God is faithful. May we not lose hope and know God’s peace in the days ahead.

Christmas Dinner
Kildallon/Swanlinbar and Killeshandra members enjoyed a beautiful meal in the Seven Horseshoes Hotel in Belturbet on 10th December. We were delighted to have Rev. Alison Calvin join us for the event. A warm welcome was given by Lorna Graham and Gladys Anderson - Branch Leaders. Following the meal everyone received a gift from the secret Santa and then Leila Beattie had everyone on the floor for some dance movements which were thoroughly enjoyed by both those taking part and those who watched. We finished off the evening with some Carol singing with Lorna Graham on the keyboard. Rev. Alison gave a short reflection on the true meaning of Christmas and the importance of keeping Christ at the centre of our lives this Christmas. This was a lovely evening of fellowship and fun with neighbouring branches.

money offeringImportant Giving News

Money, tax and good news don’t usually go together!
At a recent treasurers’ meeting with Rev Billy Stafford we learnt more about the new regulations relating to charities. The good news from the Southern Government is that money given to charity can be made to go much further.
There are significant changes from 2013 allowing an increase in the amount of tax refund churches can claim.

Old System
New System
The Church could only reclaim tax from those who paid tax under the PAYE system The church ONLY can reclaim tax on donations by all individuals – PAYE & self employed.
The individual had to give annual approval to the claim The individual can give approval for up to 5 years to reclaim
The tax reclaimable was dependant on the individuals marginal tax rate. All claims are reclaimable at 31%, provided the individual has paid more tax than the potential refund.

How does it work?

An individual makes a contribution of €250 or more in a specific calendar year. This can be a one off donation or made up of a number of donations.
The church must record this and the individual must give consent to the organisation to reclaim the tax.
The church submits a claim to Revenue who refund or decline to refund.

While this will not effect everyone’s giving (notably the many retired who give so generously) and we are further complicated by life on the border, it will hopefully be good news. 31% on top of donations received is significant. money

€250   given = €362 after donations receive tax refund
€500   given = €725
€1000 given = €1450

We hope this will encourage you and we will give further information soon.

Smile!

How about a Smile?

Alcohol, Cigarettes & Chocolate
On Sunday morning, the preacher brings in 4 covered jars with one live worm in each. wormIn one he poured whiskey, in one he poured liquid chocolate, in the third one he poured cigarette smoke and in the fourth one he threw in dirt. Result was nothing unusual. Worms in first three jars died. He then looked at the congregation and said, "I don't have to tell much. I believe you have learnt a clear lesson". Then he pointed at a little girl and asked,"Sweetheart, can you tell what have you learnt?". Without any hesitation she said, "If you drink, smoke and eat chocolate you'll never have worms".

WeddingWhy do Brides Wear White?
Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl whispered to her mother, “Why is the bride dressed in white?”
The mother replied, ‘Because white is the colour of happiness, and today is the happiest day of her life.’
The child thought about this for a moment then said, “So why is the groom wearing black?

Church of Ireland Cross     Prayer Points for January and February    Church of Ireland Cross

Let us continue to listen to God in prayer and develop a daily routine of praying for the following on the day of the week indicated;
In light of a season of thanksgiving let us give thanks to God;

Sunday: Give thanks To God. Praise him for his help through the past year. Thank him for the joys, his help and healing in times of trouble and suffering;
Monday: We give thanks for our schools and the gift of teachers. We pray students will absorb knowledge and the teachers will be able to impart it.
Tuesday: Pray at the beginning of this New Year for a real sense of God’s leading in all that we engage in as a Church and in our communities;
Wednesday: Let us again give thanks for all the doctors, nurses, social workers and others who minister to the sick, the injured and the dying, especially those who don’t think of their own rewards, those like Beryl Baker and Sue Trenier;
Thursday: Pray that we would see new works of healing in the coming year, healing of relationships, healing of hearts, healing of emotions, healing of physical pain. We pray for Christ’s renewing;
Friday: Pray for troubled parts of the world, Syria, Sudan, Afghanistan, Iraq that peace and security will be brought to them soon and their suffering will end;
