Amazing Grace

Church of Ireland Cross

Neighbours TV programme logo

On Easter Monday we went to Buncrana in Donegal for a few days. I have only been there once before on a wet day last year, yet it was inspiring. Two Christian friends have worked with the local community and encouraged the town to take hold of their wonderful link to John Newton the writer of ‘Amazing Grace’. This Easter they had an Amazing Grace festival, a series of community events to celebrate this connection with the world’s most popular hymn (with over 3000 recorded versions).
John Newton mocked Christians until he prayed to God in the middle of a storm in the Atlantic. Starving and with their boat near sinking they came into Lough Swilly and anchored on the shore of Buncrana. John Newton’s life was now forever changed and he committed his way to God. He went on to become a minister in the Anglican Church and helped encourage William Wilberforce in his campaign to end the slave trade.
John Newron on his slave ship‘Amazing grace’ was one of 300 hymns John wrote, often to go with his Sunday sermon in the village church. The famous tune came much later though, so it may well have been more like our canticle singing when it first appeared sung to a well known tune of the day that it happened to fit. John Newron
Amazing grace revisited John Newton’s experience in the storm. He never forgot what God had done for him. Undeserving though he was, his life had been saved.
John Newton’s life makes me think about so much. Mostly though, I think about grace.
Grace is an undeserved gift. John knew that before God there was no reason for his life to be saved. He had been a foul mouthed, blasphemous slave trader who ridiculed many around him. Even John concluded at the helm of the boat, “My sins are too great to be forgiven.” Yet God intervened.
His life was changed by God and then wonderfully given back to God. In God’s hands his life was then wonderfully used.
We may not be foul mouthed and blasphemous. We may not have been involved knowingly in the slave trade. We may not have ridiculed other Christians. Yet we can live lives so easily without God in every part.
Easter is all about grace. The cross is the place we are saved. The cross is our place of rescue.
May the joy and blessing of rescue revealed at Easter continue to reign in our hearts.

Amazing Grace (How sweet the sound)
That sav'd a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears reliev'd;
How precious did that grace appear,
The hour I first believ'd!
Thro' many dangers, toils and snare,
I have already come;
'Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
The Lord has promised good to me.
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.
Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease;
I shall profess, within the vail,
A life of joy and peace.
The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, who call'd me here below,
Will be for ever mine.

Bereavements
Cross

With sadness we extend our sincerest sympathies to the Kells family, his wife Irene, children Neville, Helen, Bryan, Sheila and Alison of Kilarah, Ballyheady following the death of Ivan Kells. Ivan will be remembered with great fondness by the many who attended the annual Bawnboy shows in which Ivan always put on such a great display of vintage farm machinery and old methods of working. As we remember Ivan there is so much in his life to give thanks to God for. May we be comforted in the sure hope of eternity and a life in all its fullness with our heavenly Father. .

Bereavement Prayer
Heavenly Father, give us faith and light in times of darkness. May our trusting in you help us live with questions unanswered. Grant us a certain hope in You, that will grow to surpass immeasurably the greatest depths of despair felt now. In you our Lord we put our trust.

Passion of ChristThe Passion

As part of our Holy week, Good Friday enabled a number of parishioners to watch the film 'The Passion'. It was a difficult film to watch which raised many questions. The film is brutal and shocking portraying something of the horror of punishment in Roman times. Amidst it all there were some incredibly memorable scenes that spoke powerfully of the characters around Jesus like Mary his mother and Simon who carried the cross. If anyone would want to view the film please ask Richard.

Thank you for your continued support for Beryl and her work in the Chaco region of Paraguay. Your support is so important to Beryl as she uses the money we give to purchase medicines for those who visit the clinic. The amount we send in a very real way effects the level of help she is able to give. If you have not yet given your donation it is not too late yet but please do pass in on to your parish treasurer.

90th Birthday Celebrations

There were wonderful celebrations on Easter Sunday as Shirley Graham's family celebrated her 90th birthday. It was lovely to see so many of the family able to be present. With five sons and five daughters and grandchildren and great grandchildren there's a number! We were reminded to thank God for the gift of life in all its ups and downs and give thanks to God for Shirley's good health and the blessing of her family near and far.

Easter in Kinawley

Following our Lent initiative 'Stories of Hope' in St Paul's and St Naile’s, members of both traditions met on Good Friday.

Good Friday Walk

At 10am between thirty-five and forty people gathered and walked from St Paul’s and St Naile’s to the Enterprise Centre for a service. A part of the cross was brought from each church, along with prayers written in the days before. Having thought about the divisions in our nation, between communities, churches and families a member of each congregation joined the cross. When we come humbly to the cross divisions are broken.
13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
14 For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility. Ephesians 2:13-14

After the service we had planned to take the cross up Benaughlin Hill, local to Kinawley. In hindsight we probably could have done so as 17 hardy souls went to the summit including a number of young people representing the future of Kinawley. We had a short service slightly sheltered just below the summit and the written prayers were burned. Having as a group experienced the walk, it would be good to take the cross to the summit next year!

At the Beacon

Easter Morning! It was wonderful to see around 60 brave individuals of all ages braving the cold to welcome the dawn. Thanks to the generous support of Fermanagh Council for our Easter activities, we were delighted to have a beacon burning as we arrived. The beacon, a powerful symbol of the light, love and hope of Christ breaks into the darkness of our hurt, pain and sin. Christ breaks into the darkness of the world. Our reading reminded us that Christ rose while it was still dark! He comes in the midst of our pain, sin and division. It is a powerful reminder of the need for our churches to persevere and continue working together. Christ comes in the midst of our hurting and divisions and makes the difference. After the service we walked through the village to the new Kinawley Community Centre for a welcome breakfast.

At the Cross

This has not been an easy journey for some and I would want to thank all those who have taken steps however large or small in our journey through Lent and Easter. While our Protestant and Catholic churches have many differences we seek to build on those things we can share in. Easter and Christmas are our best opportunities in the year as we point to Christ and his life given for us.

If you missed weeks from the Stories of Hope you will be able to download and hear recordings at www.kinawleychurchestogether.wordpress.com The web site includes many more pictures and information on this work in Kinawley.

Fermanagh Rural Community Network Fair

Fermanagh Rural Community Network FairA Health and Well-Being Fair was held in Kinawley Minor Hall under the auspice of Fermanagh Rural Community Network (FRCN) who recently worked on the MARA (Maximising Access in Rural Areas) project in a number of communities in County Fermanagh, one of which was the Kinawley and Florencecourt Electoral Ward. This was an information day with display stands representing a broad range of organisations, including the Housing Executive, Rural Lift, Lakeland Community Care, Library Service, Aware-defeat depression, Rural Support, Chest Heart and Stroke Association and the PSNI. Fermanagh Rural Community Network Fair
All participants of the MARA Project were invited to the Fair which began with a lunch, including stew and desserts followed by tea or coffee, provided by the ladies of Swanlinbar Parish; this was much appreciated and enjoyed by all.
After lunch, representatives from the organisations spoke about the work they do and everyone was free to obtain further information from those they were most interested in.
Fermanagh Rural Community Network also provided funding to the hosts of the Fair; this enabled them to run four evenings in Kinawley for the local community to attend. Fermanagh Rural Community Network FairTwo evenings of Social dancing were held, Liam Jones demonstrated an amazing number of items in a very short period of time during a cookery demonstration (they disappeared in an equally short period of time when everyone sampled them for supper!) and the final evening was a flower arranging demonstration by Pam Thornton.
Sincere thanks to all the ladies who contributed to and helped serve the lunch and also to FRCN for funding the events.

Time for a Smile!

A Special Hymn

Glass of beerA preacher was completing a temperance sermon; with great expression he said, "If I had all the beer in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river."
Wine bottle with glass & grapesWith even greater emphasis he said, "And if I had all the wine in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river."
And then finally, he said, "And if I had all the whiskey in the world, I'd take it and throw it into the river."
Drinking at the riverHe sat down.

The song leader then stood very cautiously and announced with a smile, "For our offertory closing song, let us sing Hymn Number 677: "Shall We Gather at the River."

Let us continue to listen to God in prayer and develop a daily routine of praying for the following on the day of the week indicated;
In light of a season of thanksgiving let us give thanks to God;

Sunday: Pray for the leaders in those countries and their neighbours where violence and excess zeal outweigh wisdom, sense and political negotiation;
Monday: Pray for favourable weather for farmers, fishermen and all those who depend on the weather this Spring, that crops grow and animals flourish;
Tuesday: Pray for Beryl Baker and others who bring healthcare to the less well off that through practical care and words of healing may they share Christ;
Wednesday: Pray for all those who look after our security and the peace of this and all other nations in times of social unrest and conflict;
Thursday: Pray for those who are suffering grief and pain from losing loved ones, especially those in our own community as well as those known to us. That they would experience Christ's presence in the darkest times;
Friday: Pray for the work of vestries as they are underway again. Grant wisdom, purpose and success in all the parts of Church life
Saturday: For all those who are sick or troubled – pray for healing in their lives and peace for all those who are anxious.
