Missing out!

Church of Ireland Cross
What a crazy end to the football season, we’ve just had. Chelsea are champions of Europe after a nail biting penalty shootout, while the big Manchester teams had an amazing tussle to win the Premier league. It was unforgettable stuff. If City won their match they would win the league. Manchester CityUnited had to win their game and hope City their neighbours would slip up. No-one could have predicted the drama to come.
It started as everyone expected with City winning and then incredibly City were losing and United were going to win the title. United were winning right to the end when with seconds left City scored two goals. Incredible! Yes, grown men were crying! Tears of pain were in a moment turned to joy for City fans. Celebration turned to weeping for United fans. I guess I should apologise for the painful reminder to our local United fans (Brendan and the Bishop amongst them!) but what a game!
Imagine though if you were one of the many City fans who refused to stay to the end of the match. You had a ticket. You were there in the ground but left early. You went distraught, upset and angry thinking only of hiding at home, kicking the cat and drowning the sorrows! As you left, you were to miss the greatest moment in the history of their club!
Years from now the City fans will still be talking about it. As others share the line, “I was there when ...” you will remember regret and foolishness! You missed it. You left before time.
It’s natural to go when we think it’s no longer worthwhile staying. Manchester City supporters who left the game early made the wrong call that it was not worth their while staying. It was a bad call and didn’t they mess up!
Crowds at the gameWhen I think of those City supporters who missed out, I’m reminded of the need to persevere in my own Christian faith. Am I a follower of Jesus to the end or just when I feel like it?
I pray for a faith in Jesus to see the things that really matter, to put my energies and time into things that will really last.
In the midst of struggles and questions I pray for a faith in Jesus that is so much more than entertainment. I want a faith that helps me through the uncertainties of life.
In a world struggling for purpose I pray for a faith in Jesus that helps me discover fully my potential and helps me make a difference, now and for eternity.
With the promise of some super children’s work this summer, I’m also reminded of the need to persevere for the sake of my children. I don’t want my children to miss out. May I seek to give my children every opportunity to grow in Christian faith. It really falls on me to give them the very best chance to discover Jesus. I can’t make my children follow Jesus but I can ensure they have every opportunity to discover Him.
Richard's signatureCaptain Richard Beadle
I am saddened when parents want the best schooling, best swimming, best soccer camp and so on, yet faith in Jesus worth far more than gold is not pursued fully.
This is a season of sporting pursuit. European Football championships and the Olympics in addition to the usual summer sports. It’s also a season full of opportunity to pursue the Christian life. Take every opportunity. Let’s grow as a church family. Let’s grow our children’s experience of faith. Let’s see our own faith grow. Don’t miss out.

Mothers Union logoMothers Union

Mothers' Union held a Mums in May tea party in Kinawley Minor Hall to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Mothers' Union in Ireland.

MU Mums in May meetingMrs. Margaret Crawford, on behalf of the Branch, welcomed everyone to the event, especially visitors and asked Mrs. Lorna Graham, Diocesan Marketing Co-ordinator, to explain about the 125th anniversary celebrations and what the funds raised were being used for. She explained that all monies raised from the tea parties will be divided between the Overseas fund, the Centenary Fund which supports Clergy in Ireland during their training and local projects in Ireland – dioceses will be able to apply for funding to support a suitable project which they would like to undertake.
She also provided some information about the Bye-Buy Childhood campaign which was introduced by Mothers' Union to challenge the commercialisation of childhood.
Please see below for more about Bye-Buy childhood.

Mrs Pauline Beadle then did a cookery demonstration, making several recipes while demonstrating the use of some of her Pampered Chef cookware. She asked several members of the audience to assist her, adding to the entertainment of the evening and we all learned some new cookery tips.
MU Mums in May meetingSupper was then served and everyone was able to sample Pauline’s recipes along with many items cooked by members from recipes out of the ‘Teatime Treats’ cookery book which was produced to coincide with the 125th anniversary celebrations.
Mrs Linda Lovett brought along the Enterprise Stall with many books, cards and gifts which were available to purchase on the evening.
Swanlinbar & Kildallon Mothers' Union are greatly indebted to Pauline for helping out with the cookery demonstration and making the evening such a success. The total amount raised was £111 and €154. The sum of €42.75 has also been given to us as commission from Pauline for sales of Pampered Chef products on the night.

Bye - Bye childhood Campaign
Bye - Bye childhood Some information about the Bye bye childhood campaign which was introduced by Mothers' Union to challenge the commercialisation of childhood. Childhood is now treated as a marketing opportunity and the Mothers' Union believe that children should be valued as children and not consumers. £350 million is spent in the UK each year on persuading children to consume and the materialism this encourages has negative effects on children's physical health, mental and emotional wellbeing, on their values, educational development and relationships with families and peers.
The advice of Mothers' Union is:
1. When next out shopping analyse your consumer habits, before buying think -
Why do I want to buy it? How often will I use it? Can I afford it? What will happen if I don't buy it?
2. Challenge retailers and advertisers who sell or advertise inappropriately to children. When shopping, if you see an item aimed at children that you believe is inappropriate for their age, or is of a sexualised nature for a child under 16, raise your concern with the shop manager or company head office.
3. Contact your political representative, many of whom are concerned about the commercialisation of childhood.
Members were also reminded to use the Postcards which are available to send to OfCom (UK) or the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland if they feel a programme or advertisement is unsuitable for viewing by children and teenagers and that it should not be shown before the 9pm watershed.

News from Beryl Baker                     (Written last month)Beryl Baker

Last Monday I felt free to come to town as the weather seems more stable after nearly a whole month of thunderstorms and a deluge of rain. Where I am the flooding has not been half so bad as the 1998 disaster but in other places it is even worse and many people living near the Pilcomayo river have lost their homes and livestock.
Estribo and La Patria are the worst affected of the Anglican Indian colonies as the roads are like rivers. The Emergency services are well organised and helicopters have flown in food and medical help and brought out seriously ill people. On the whole the Indians homes are o.k., it's just the roads that are causing hardship.
At the back of the ranch there is waist deep water in the houses and the families there have moved closer to me but the road was not passable until a tractor got through last weekend with provisions.
From Sunday onwards there has been a cold front and the rain has stopped. In fact the weather is beautiful at the moment but very chilly in the morning and night.
There has been a tremendous response from everyone to help the flood victims and after the water has receded and the mud dried out the ongoing needs of the people will be easier to assess.
Apart from my animals being terrified of the thunder the only really unpleasant thing for me has been finding leeches in my bathroom. I haven't seen any of these things since Makthlawaiya days.
Rhett (the ranch owner) returned to Paraguay last Friday and is gradually recovering and I hope to see him this week.
The Luis Palau Festival ( Luis is a world renowned Argentinean Evangelist) was a great success and attended by 30,000 people, mainly young people. Aminda, Ana and Brian from my Asuncion home went along last Saturday and returned home at 2 a.m. as the activities did not finish until 1a.m. as the response was so enormous to the Gospel message. Luis Palau was able to speak to the members of the Paraguayan Senate and the response was also very positive. I didn't realise that he is no longer a young man and he spoke for an hour standing up obviously anointed with the power of the Holy Spirit. 'The testimony of his son Andrew also made a tremendous impact.
This week is a week of catching up with people and getting things repaired.
My watch is again working and my glasses are wonderfully repaired and the people responsible were very keen to here about Jesus this morning.
Tomorrow, D.V. a new tyre will be fitted to the front wheel of the truck to replace the second hand one that was miraculously obtained on Maundy Thursday to enable me to get to the ranch after the original tyre completely disintegrated. I had just slowed down for a police check and the truck gently swerved to the side of the road.
Thanks to Ed Brice who was also returning to the Chaco from Asuncion I was not completely stranded in that isolated place. Just another example of the Lord's protection and provision.

lots of love and prayers
Beryl .

Sunday School Prize Giving and Operation Mobilisation Operation Mobilisation

On the sunniest of days we were delighted to have a team from Operation Mobilisation help us with our Sunday School Prize giving. After the service we had a chance to explore the Big Red Bus while the children had loads of fun with games, songs, puppets and crafts. It's left us really excited as we look forward to the team coming again in the summer to help lead our summer club. May I add a huge thank you to everyone who came and helped make the day happen and to the Forward group who helped organise the marquee and refreshments. It was so worthwhile. Thank you.

Below are some of the pictures taken on the day, click on them for larger versions which will open in a new window (or new tab).

IndiaIndia Update

ICMC Report for April and May 2012

“Thus saith the LORD, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the LORD thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go.” Isaiah 48:17
We are so grateful to the Almighty God for His wonderful doings during these two months.
Board exams for Std X were started on 4.4.’12. All the exams were over on 23.04.’12. We had a wonderful service on 6.4.’12, the Good Friday. The seven utterances of Christ on the cross were meditated calmly and many of the participants were touched by the scene of the cross. Easter Sunday was celebrated very well. The message given by Rev.Dr.Jay was fantastic. As usual we provided very good meals and sweets to all the children. Easter cake was cut and distributed to the children. Mr. Mark Groening from Canada arrived House of Peace on the 6th and left 12th. His short visit was useful to us all.
Dr JayOn the 21st of April all the ICMC schools were closed due to summer vacation. Many of the children were taken by their relatives, parents and grandparents for the vacation and will be returned in the first week of June.
Maintenance work which consumed a lot was going on in the three places.
On 25.04.2012 Rev. Basil Bright, our younger son was engaged with Joy Agnees who is a medical doctor. God willing their marriage will take place on 12.07.2012.
On 29.04.2012 all the children who stayed at the orphanages were taken to a water theme park with Mr.Ian and they enjoyed so much. Mr.Ian is taking care of the children at the Promised Land.
We had Timothy school graduation on 04.05.’12. By God’s grace it went well.
In the 2nd week of May we had VBS program for five days, it was a blessing to many children. May was very hot here. On the 22nd +2 results were published. We got 98% result only. One girl failed in accountancy.
On May 14th our daughter Dr. Neva met with an accident. Her car was broken into pieces but she was saved by His grace miraculously. We all are so thankful to the Lord for His protective hands upon her.
On May 24th B.Ed exams were started. 2 of our House of Peace students have written their exams. Please pray for their success.
All our village churches and Day Care Centres are going on well for His glory.

May the Lord bless you all!
Yours in Him,
Mrs. J. Christy
Secretary, ICMC 1st June 2012

Talking About Death

Three buddies were talking about death and dying.
One asked, "When you're in your coffin and friends and family are mourning you, what would you like to hear them say about you?"
Pine CoffinThe first guy says, "I would like to hear them say that I was a great doctor of my time and a great family man."
The second man says, "I would like to hear that I was a wonderful husband and school teacher who made a huge difference in our children of tomorrow."
The last guy says, "I would like to hear them say LISTEN, HE'S MOVING!!!"

BicycleSpread it around!

Little Johnny had been a very naughty boy so his father was surprised when his wife suggested that they buy him a new bicycle. "Do you think it will improve his behaviour?" The father asked. "No," replied his wife grimly. "But it will spread it over a wider area."

Church of Ireland Cross   Prayer Points for the remainder of June and early July  Church of Ireland Cross

Let us continue to listen to God in prayer and develop a daily routine of praying for the following on the day of the week indicated;
In our year of mission let us pray on each day for one another.

Sunday: We pray for the opening of God’s Word into our lives, through our services and in our homes;
Monday: We pray for each of our churches as they seek to grow as a family. For a deepening of relationships in moments of joy and celebration, pain and disagreement;
Tuesday: We pray for the work on our halls. As our eyes are often drawn to the needs of getting the work done and paid for, may we continue to keep their long term use for your kingdom in mind;
Wednesday:

We pray for safety on the farms during a busy season with much machinery in use;

Thursday: We pray for the summer children’s club led by the team from Operation Mobilisation. May it be spiritually significant in the lives of children and helpers;
Friday: We pray for families who are able to get away – for precious times that build bonds of love;
Saturday: We pray for those married in a year when a number of parishioners have got married. May love, faithfulness and openness in words and action grow even in joy and sorrow.
