'He Died For Me'

Church of Ireland Cross

Cabbages For A King

I love Easter. Many times I tell people that it’s my favourite time of year. Why because it’s true! Everything about it points to new life and wonder. Recently I stumbled across a short story from the Christian writer Adrian Plass that speaks of that wonder. In his book, ‘Cabbages For A King’, he tells a very insightful story from a day he was cycling in northern France with his family. They entered a big church to look around. His daughter Katy aged only four stopped and was lost in thought staring at a life size sculpture of Mary, holding her son’s dead body in her arms.
Little Katy then asked her daddy, “Daddy why has Jesus got a hole in his side?” Caught a little by surprise Adrian tried to sensitively tell a four year old that a Roman soldier had put a spear in Jesus’ side. Katy was horrified.
Again she looked. “Daddy, he’s got holes in his feet. Why has he got holes in his feet?” Pointing to a small crucifix Adrian then shared how Jesus was nailed to a cross, and those were the holes where the nails were. This was slowly sinking in when Katy exclaimed in a broken voice, “Daddy, he’s got holes in his hands as well. They didn’t nail his hands as well, did they?”
Adrian her father was then forced to explain how, sadly they had.
Katy moved closer to the sculpture and put her arms around the figure of Jesus, resting her face on his knee. “Poor Jesus.”
Adrian then wrote, ”Suddenly I longed to go back to the time when I first understood.”

Holy weekThis year our Holy week is going to be an opportunity to consider Easter in an entirely fresh and unique way. It will be new for all of us as we seek to follow the story of the passion in real time. We will follow the events of the passion beginning in Tomregan and then to each church in the group right through the Thursday night and through the whole of Good Friday. A time table is below this article. If you manage to follow it right through you will no doubt sleep through much of Saturday, probably just like the disciples after their rollercoaster ride of emotions had come to a traumatic stop – Jesus buried in a garden. Rising again we will have our Easter Eve and Sunday services including the opportunity again to meet the sunrise with our dawn service.
I would ask each of you to make arrangements to go to as much as you can. Ask God to help you determine how much to go to. Encourage others to come too – perhaps family and friends who might not always make a normal Sunday.
We hope that a good few of you will seek to do the whole event - after all we may never have such an opportunity again. Even if you cannot manage it all - seek to experience key parts of the journey. Come to:

1. The Last Supper (Tomregan)
2. A part of The night with Jesus (Newtwongore, Corrawallen, Templeport & Swanlinbar )
3. A part of Good Friday at the cross. (Kildlalon )
4. An Easter service to celebrate the resurrection.

Families with children may find the Thursday evening suitable and hands on while the first part of our time at Kildallon on the Friday morning (8.30am - 9.15ish) with our short walk up the hill behind the cross will also be memorable to all ages.

Richard's signatureCaptain Richard Beadle
We are also after folk offering their help to make this happen. As you can imagine there are lots of practicalities to sort out and opportunities for music, reading, catering and transport instantly come to mind. Please speak to Brendan or myself if you would like to help in some way.
Church of Ireland Cross. We would love to see a really good turn out for what will be a really memorable event in the life of our Parishes. Brendan and I have no doubt that this can be an Easter that is hugely significant in our journey of faith.

Cavan General HospitalImportant Hospital News

Hospital SignKeen eyed readers of the Scribe will have read a piece from Canon Mark Lidwell that is worth repeating here. He writes “In the last month Cavan General Hospital has cited Data Protection as a reason for preventing Hospital Chaplains from having access to the list of patients. This has made my job almost impossible and protests have been made to the relevant authorities. What it means is that people going into hospital should let local clergy know if they would like a visit from them and also let themselves be known to me, or inform a nurse if they would like me to call. It is a very unsatisfactory arrangement and I apologise if I have failed to visit you, but it is a matter beyond my control.”.

Bereavement

CrossTommy Sherritt

It is with sadness and thanksgiving that Tommy was buried on his 100th birthday. Tommy not only lived to a great age, he also enjoyed remarkable health and quality of life until very recently. There are not many folk able to give up driving at 97! Our thoughts and prayers are with daughter Valerie son Norman in Kildallon and all the rest of the family who rejoiced in Tommy playing such a wonderful part in their lives.

Heavenly Father, give us faith and light in times of darkness. May our trusting in you help us live with questions unanswered. Grant us a certain hope in You, that will grow to surpass immeasurably the greatest depths of despair felt now. In you our Lord we put our trust.

Letter from Beryl Baker

Casilla 1124, Asunción, Paraguay, Beryl
Wednesday, 15 February 2012, 0:54

Dear Praying Friends,
Beryl Baker Jesus said to his disciples, "The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest, ask him to send more workers into his fields."
The second month of the New Year already. A cool Christmas day with a lovely Christingle service at the Rio Verde church seems just like yesterday.
Now the days are anything but cool and the humidity is making everyone feel very tired. 10 days ago 247ml of rain fell at the ranch. Hallelujah!! Now thousands of mosquitoes are enjoying their wet breeding grounds and making their presence felt.
My helper, Brenda, departed at the end of November so now I really am on my own. Ana , from the house in Asuncion and her elder brother Miguel are looking after the animals in the Chaco while I'm in town. Please pray that I will be able to find someone who is free and willing to do this once a month.
On 24th December, Norma, a 27 year old Ministry of Health nurse who had been based in Rio Verde was travelling to her home in Villa Hayes when the front tyre of her vehicle exploded and as a result she was killed. Please pray for her family, especially for her two daughters who are both under five years of age.
Paraguayan preachers continue to come to the Rio Verde church where
the congregation enjoys everything in the Guarani language. Ed Brice
now has the role of co-ordinating these visitors.
The monthly medical trip to the Indian colony, La Patria continues.
Please pray for two young men Edgar and Rafael who have T.B. and Lidia
the health promoter as she administers their daily medicines, also for
Victoriana at Estribo with the same problem. Cirilo Benitez is
responsible for her care. Graciela Mayor from Jerusalem, Sombrero
Piri with cancer of the cervix needs your prayers, also.
Richard and team with Claire Holmes & Beryl Baker Two Rhodesian Ridgeback puppies that were left in the rubbish bin at
the entrance to the ranch are with me in town recovering. A starving black Labrador will also need a new home once she has been nursed back to health.
Please pray for Aminda's daughter Irene and her 18 month old son Enrique as they need somewhere other than my house to live and Irene needs to find employment.
Irene has become a Christian and now recognises what a mess she has made of her life and that of her 3 living children. The eldest is being cared for by her grandmother in Argentina, Brian lives here in the house with Amina and Ana but now there is little Enrique.
Sharon,72 years old today, continues with the Bible studies for alcoholics and drug addicts plus supervising the home for teenage girls and women that have been abused or have problems with alcohol and drugs.
The theme about more labourers for the Lord's harvest has been to the fore . It is worrying that no younger people are interested in working in the Chaco with the indigenous people. Finding people who will consistently do the will of the Lord rather than their own thing is now a big problem everywhere here.
Lyn Tedman, a teacher at the Anglican School, San Andres is now at retiring age,
faces a big op' and has recently been diagnosed with diabetes. Mags and Gwen, need grace, strength and wisdom for the new school year and Tim in the Chaco as he continues with the Old Testament in Enxet and all the visits he makes to encourage the Indians at Makthlwaiya and Estribo.
I praise the Lord for money that has been donated to pay off bills for medicines and for the purchase of more as the Ministry of health's input is far from adequate.
The future is in the Lord's hands and I need to know clearly the way ahead.
"The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face to shine upon you.
The Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace" Numbers 6;24,25,26
Love and prayers,
Beryl.

Beryl Baker Easter Day Collections

JKar of Grace fullJar of Grace nearly emptyLent is the time of year when we think of nurse Beryl Baker in very practical and specific giving and prayer. As well as our grace jars which some parishioners give to as a regular pattern of lifting Beryl before God, our Lent midweek service collections also go to SAMS for needed medical supplies. With our passion in real time in Holy week this year there will be fewer collections. Loose plate collections on EASTER day will therefore go to Beryl’s work. Grace jars are also collected on Easter Sunday. Our United Service on April 29th will give thanks for our link with Paraguay through Beryl.

Safeguarding Trust

Safeguarding Trust logoPeriodically we remind members of our parishes that we have to follow code of practice called Safeguarding Trust . This is the policy of the Church of Ireland to set standards for the welfare of all children sharing in its ministry with a view to protecting them from physical, sexual and emotional harm.
Safeguarding Trust means for the thousands of children using Church of Ireland premises for worship and other activities like Sunday Schools and Sunday Clubs that they are protected from all kinds of abuse, and that parishes are consciously promoting their general safety and welfare. Children’s ministry is only possible because of the commitment of adults who are prepared to work with children and who have been selected, appointed and trained in Safeguarding Trust to feel confident that they are adhering to good practices and that they are protected from unfounded allegations.
Presently we are reviewing and updating all our safeguarding trust procedures. Any new work with children will need to ensure that leaders have gone through Safeguarding Trust. For example if anyone is wanting to help in the summer Holiday club they will need the relevant training and checks as soon as possible. Ideally such a process should start three months before the club starts so that we have adequate time.

Some St Patrick’s Day Smiles

Paddy ShamrockLegend has it that St Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland. It is also claimed that he had a way with words, and used the three leaves of the Shamrock to explain the Trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

Question: Does March 17th commemorate St Patrick's birth or his death,
Clue: the Irish love their wakes. Answer: St Patrick died on March 17th 461 AD.

It often happens that there are not many Irishman celebrating St Patrick's day in Ireland. The reason is simple they will all be at Cheltenham Festival for the racing craic!

Celtic Blessing

May the road rise up to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine down upon your face.
And the rain fall soft upon your fields
Until we meet again
May God hold you in the hollow of his hand

Another Irish Blessing

May the Irish hills caress you.
May her lakes and rivers bless you.
May the luck of the Irish enfold you.
May the blessings of Saint Patrick behold you.

Church of Ireland Cross   Prayer Points for the Remainder of March and April  Church of Ireland Cross

Let us continue to listen to God in prayer and develop a daily routine of praying for the following on the day of the week indicated;

Sunday: We pray for our Lent and Easter Services. As we follow the way of the cross may we truly deepen our spiritual lives and meet Jesus;
Monday: Continue to give thanks for the work of the South American Missionary Society. We pray for all those Richard met with, last summer in Paraguay including Beryl Baker;
Tuesday: Pray for those suffering because of strife and civil unrest in the Middle East and elsewhere in the world;
Wednesday: Pray for our Jar of Grace this Lent. May it help us grow in loving those who are poor materially and help us grow in appreciation and thanksgiving for what we have;
Thursday: Pray for the government in the South. Grant them wisdom as they seek to govern in this difficult financial climate. We pray too especially for our local representatives;
Friday: Pray for future plans for work with children and young people in our group. May our work with them grow so that more children and families share in the life of Jesus;
Saturday:

Pray for those who have lost loved ones and those suffering the pain of illness or depression. May we see love, support and healing through words, actions and miracle.
