'Church is a bit like Being a Member of a Gym'

Church of Ireland Cross
Christchurch Catherdral, DublinVery recently the family and I were away near to Dublin. Whenever we go away we always try to get to a local church. It’s great to see other churches and experience faith in different settings. It’s a small world as we were asked if we knew of Kildallon parishioners having only mentioned living in Cavan!
Later I noticed the church newsletter carried the following Gospel one liner by comedian Milton Jones.
Church is a bit like being a member of a gym.
Some like the idea of going but don’t!
Others go, but aren’t really trained for anything.
Some actually use it to help them with the race they are running
.
Gym trainingI confess - I’m a member of a gym but don’t go! Often when we take the kids swimming I’ll look in and think that would be so good to do. Then practicality and excuses set in. I feel slightly guilty almost every time I go past!
Of course I need not feel guilty - the gym really is not a priority for me! It’s a nice idea. It might be good to do. When all is said and done it’s not a must in my life. That said it is important that I get exercise in some form! Though I might not make the gym, exercise and good food are an important part of well being.
RunnerIt’s very easy to think about the church in the same way we look at being part of a club. Like the gym it’s there to help us get into shape. While the gym primarily improves us physically the church is there to feed our hearts and minds with spiritual food. A good gym gives you a fitness plan to follow. The church helps point to Jesus and the plan that he has for each one of our lives. I wonder if you have ever wondered what God has called you to do for Him? What work has he created for you to do?
Hurdler Whenever we come together to worship God we have choices. We might go because we are expected to be there while perhaps dreaming of other ways of spending our time! We may go with no expectations or very few. Then again a far more helpful alternative is to go offering ourselves, asking our Lord God to continue to show us his plans for us as we seek to follow him.
The apostle Paul likened his faith to running a race. He is also aware that obstacles can get in the way. To the church in Galatia he wrote, “you were running a good race, who cut in on you and prevented you from obeying the truth.”
Paul encourages us to keep on track – keep running the race. “Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.”
Richard's signatureCaptain Richard Beadle
For most of us the gym is an optional priority usually declined. Following Jesus redefines priorities! Following Jesus the Church is so much more than an hour a week in a building. Church of Ireland CrossThe church is the people of God – you and me. Even more incredible is the thought that we can be Jesus’ hands and feet here on the earth today. What has God put on your heart as a way of serving Him? Are you running that race today?

Every Year the conference New wine takes place in Sligo. We have a particular interest in the conference in 2012 as the main speaker in the morning sessions will be our own Bishop Ken. Next year it will run from Sunday July 8th to Friday 13th. It’s a great week for all ages, full of great teaching and worship. Some folk visit for days, many folk go for the whole week. We're telling you about it now because it's always cheaper to book early. If anyone would just like to know more please have a word with Pauline Beadle and she will give the latest news.

Sustentation / Free Will Offerings

Money offeringsWe really value the gifts of all our parishioners and friends of the various Parishes in our group - without your giving the work of the Church would not be possible. In recent years we have gently encouraged people to ensure that their offerings are with the various Parish Treasurers by the last Sunday of the year. This year that is 25th December so it really would be ideal if gifts could be received the Sunday before - 18th December. If we can comply with this request then the Treasurers will have opportunity to bank your gifts before the end of the financial year, ie 31st December. This will enable us to produce a set of accounts based on the balance in the account at that date.
Once again can we publicly share our appreciation of the work of our various money counters, recorders and the Parish Treasurers, and would ask you to get your gifts to them rather than then having to come to you, a task which is difficult, time consuming and embarrassing for all concerned. Unfortunately, if your gift has not been banked by the 31st December then it will not appear in the 2011 accounts. This is in accordance with new Charities legislation that tightens our recording procedures. Thank you all once again for your support in giving to the Church. .

Bishop Ken ClarkeMission and Prayer

Scribe magazineScribe readers will no doubt be aware that the Bishop earlier designated this as a year of prayer in the diocese. At our Bishops invitation we had a special day of prayer recently visiting each of the seven churches in the group. May I thank you for your support in a most fulfilling day.
A few parishioners including some of our young people from the group also went to meetings in Killeshandra as they held a most memorable mission. I would want to thank our neighbours on a splendid week during which God was at work and many lives were clearly touched. They have given a glimpse of what is possible. Next year 2012 is the Diocesan year of Mission. What can we do?

Advent CalendarAdvent - Counting the days until Christmas

Advent, the period preceding the Christmas season begins on the Sunday nearest November 30, the feast day of St. Andrew the Apostle, and covers four Sundays. Because the day it begins changes from year to year, so does the length of each Advent season. In 2011, Advent begins on November 27th.
The word ‘Advent’, from Latin, means “the Coming.”
For centuries, Advent has been a time of spiritual reflection, cheer and anticipation. Christ is coming again!

Tomregan Hall Update

The refurbishment work on Tomregan hall is progressing.

Driving past you will notice the roof is missing on the old school side. The old gent’s toilet block has also been demolished.
Footings are presently being put inside for the steel frame that will carry the new roof.
Later there will be new toilets and significant changes to the kitchen area.
The pictures in the right are of the hall before alterations started and of the work in progress.

Many small groups are able to make use of the old Tomregan school including Happy Tots pictured at the bottom on the right..

House of Peace Orphanages, India - UpdateIndia

It was great to see a number of folk who have committed themselves to supporting children at the House of Peace Orphanage in India visited by the team last summer. Recently the plans to set up financial accounts for this work were approved by the Diocesan Finance committee. The setting up of accounts is now awaiting final approval from the Diocese on Wednesday 23rd November. We will then be in a position to start taking regular contributions from those wanting to support children from the beginning of the New Year. Anyone still considering supporting children can do so by contacting Brendan. If contact is made before Christmas this would help us enormously as everything is set up to run from January 2012. Thank you once again for your generosity.

Church of Ireland Cross   Prayer Points for November and December  Church of Ireland Cross

Let us continue to listen to God in prayer and develop a daily routine of praying for the following on the day of the week indicated;

Sunday: As Advent reminds us Christ will come again we pray that we would be ready and God would continue to transform our hearts to follow him ;
Monday: For the life of prayer in our group of churches. May your Holy Spirit both sustain and empower us as we seek you;
Tuesday: For our governments in the most difficult financial climate. Grant them wisdom in painful decisions and protect the lives of the most vulnerable and needy;
Wednesday: For all those known to us struggling with illness and for families in their loving and costly support;
Thursday: For families preparing for Christmas. That they would not be trapped by the financial pressures and hype. May the coming season be a time of real spiritual depth and meaning in the midst of all the busyness;
Friday: For the work of Open doors as they provide practical and prayer support to Christians persecuted across the world;
Saturday:

For Beryl Baker in the Chaco region of Paraguay and the work of Pastor Jay and The House of Peace in India. We especially pray for health and safety in travel as they minister in challenging situations.
