The Stones in Your Life

Church of Ireland Cross
Stones in a jarThe story is told of a professor who stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty jar and proceeded to fill it with stones. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.
The professor then picked up a box of smaller pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the larger stones. He asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.
The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous "Yes."
The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.
"Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.”
Sand falling through fingersThe large stones are the important things - family, your health, your children - things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.
The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, and your car.
The sand is everything else -- the small stuff.
"If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the larger stones. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you.
Pay attention to the things that are important to you. Play with your children, take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner.
There will always be time to clean the house and rewire the lamp."
Cup of coffee Take care of the stones first -- the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand."
Sand reminds me of Lent and the forty days Jesus spent in the wilderness seeking his heavenly Father’s will for his life. Surrounded by sand are we prepared to seek the things that really matter? What place has Jesus in your life? Talk is easy. What place has Jesus really got - is he really first? Discovering his life and purpose for us takes time, yet is of immeasurable worth. What steps are you taking to make the most of this season that takes us straight to the heart of our faith as we journey together to the cross. Easter is without question the high point and most important date in the church year. May it’s message continue to change our lives.

Peace ChoirExciting News

If you read the Scribe you will know that the Omagh Waterford Peace Choir will be coming to visit us on Maundy Thursday in Holy Week. This is a great opportunity for us to hear one of the best choirs in Ireland. Later in the year they are due to sing at the Waterfront in Belfast and the Oddessy. We will be holding this special service on Thursday of Holy week in Swanlinbar at 8 pm. This is a wonderful opportunity that we are unlikely to have again. We encourage all our parishioners to come along as well as any other folk who have not got their own service to go too.

Grace Jars

Beryl BakerJar of Grace nearly emptyAs we continue in the season of Lent may we encourage you in your giving in the grace jars for Beryl Baker.
Each time you sit to have a meal, I would invite you, along with every participating home in our Parish Grouping, to place a coin in the jar and say a simple prayer for those less fortunate than ourselves. Please do try and remember this each meal as a note shoved in to make amends for forgotten coins and prayers really is not quite the same as regular giving and prayer. On Easter Sunday we will collect in all the offerings and give thanks to God in this grace giving.Jar of Grace full
May I take this opportunity to make one gentle request on behalf of all those who have to sort out the jar contents. Could you please only put Euro and Sterling currency in the jars. We are not intending to collect foreign currencies. Living on the border we already have two and that can at times be confusing enough! Thank you for your understanding.
Richard is planning to see Beryl in July in Paraguay. Next month he hopes to finally meet up with the rest of the SAMS team that he will be traveling with and gain a bit more information.

Pancake Party

Pancake Fun

Tossing a pancakeJust a few days ago we held a Children’s Pancake Party. It was a great success and so good to see it so well supported with some 60 children in attendance. There were lots of games and food and all the children had the chance to make their own pancake. Special congratulations go to Ewan Garland who won the competition for flipping the pancake the most in a minute. Many thanks to all who helped make it such a fun afternoon.

Pictured are the GFS following their recent enrolment service held in Newtowngore. It was a memorable service with a superbly acted drama on the Good Samaritan performed by girls. In a twist on the story we know so well the victim was a clown and the Samaritan a cowgirl! The GFS are in great shape and a fine reflection on the hard work of all the leaders through the year.

SmileTime for a Smile!

What do You do All Day?

HouseworkA man came home from work and found his children outside, still in their pyjamas, playing in the mud, with empty cereal boxes and chocolate wrappers thrown all around the front garden. The door of his wife's car was open, as was the front door to the house and there was no sign of the dog. Stepping into the entry, he found an even bigger mess. A lamp had been knocked over, and the throw rug was wadded against one wall.
In the front room the TV was blaring loudly and the family room was strewn with toys and various items of clothing.
In the kitchen, dishes filled the sink, breakfast food piled high on the bench top, the fridge door was open wide, dog food was spilled on the floor and a small pile of sand was spread by the back door.
He quickly headed up the stairs, stepping over toys and more piles of clothes, looking for his wife. Panic was setting in, had something serious happened.
He was met with a small trickle of water as it made its way out the bathroom door. As he peered inside he found wet towels, scummy soap and more toys strewn over the floor. Unrolled toilet paper lay in a heap and toothpaste had been smeared over the mirror and walls.
As he rushed to the bedroom, he found his wife still curled up in the bed in her pyjamas, reading a novel. She looked up at him, smiled, and asked how his day went…
He looked at her bewildered and asked, 'What happened here today?'
She again smiled and answered, 'You know every day when you come home from work and you ask me what in the world I do all day?'
'Yes,' was his incredulous reply.
She answered, 'Well, today I didn't do it.'

Thanks to Alice Gould

Church of Ireland Cross   Prayer Points for February and March   Church of Ireland Cross

Let us continue to listen to God in prayer and develop a daily routine of praying for the following on the day of the week indicated;

Sunday: We pray for our Lent and Easter Services. As we follow the way of the cross may we truly deepen our spiritual lives and meet Jesus.
Monday: Continue to give thanks for the work of the South American Missionary Society. We pray for all those Richard will be meeting with, in the summer in Paraguay including Beryl Baker.
Tuesday: Pray for the team from this group visiting an Indian Orphanage this summer. We especially pray for the team in their preparations that truly they will grow as a team able to encourage one another;
Wednesday: Pray for our Jar of Grace this Lent. May it help us grow in loving those who are poor materially and help us grow in appreciation and thanksgiving for what we have.
Thursday: Pray for the newly formed government in the South. Grant them wisdom as they seek to govern in this difficult financial climate. We pray especially for our local representatives.
Friday: Pray for the work with children and young people in our group. May our work with them grow so that more children and families share in the life of Jesus.
Saturday: Pray for those who have lost loved ones and those in the pain of illness. May we see love, support and healing through words, actions and miracle. Please also pray too for those in Japan & Pacific after Tsunami strike.
