The Centre
Church of Ireland Cross

At a recent visit to a family I was hearing how the father in the family went to an event in England every month for thirty years. Imagine that! Going to the same event every month for 30 years!! Even Birthday and wedding celebrations in the family had to be fixed around this visit! EVERYTHING WAS FIXED AROUND THAT VISIT. I can’t help but imagine there would have been clashes over this date, yet everyone in the family understood this date was one that everything else worked around.
As I reflected on this, I began to ponder what my life and our lives are built around. Don't we all give our time and energy to those things that are most precious to us, to the things we value the most?
As I pondered, a song of worship started on the CD player in the car. It began with these words -

“Jesus, be the centre”
Be my source, be my light
Jesus, be the centre

Cross in a circleThat man I visited had a priority that shaped everything else. The song reminds us we too have a priority that shapes everything else - the life of Jesus. The enormous challenge for Christians is to shape our lives around His life, to put Jesus at the centre.
That’s easy to say but think about this for a moment. If Jesus is at the centre His ways should effect everything we do. If Jesus is at the centre we should be changing over time to become more like Him! In the Bible we see many pictures of Jesus.
Jesus was a man of prayer. He centred every thought and plan around the desire of His father. He sought only to do the will of His Father even to death.
Jesus was a man of courage, prepared to speak out against injustice and hypocrisy even if He made enemies.
Jesus was a man who offered friendship and hope. It didn’t matter if you were male or female, Jew or Gentile, rich or poor, widow or toddler, priest, prostitute or leper. Folk from all walks of life were drawn to Him and still are today!
Jesus was a man who spoke and acted with God’s authority and power.
Jesus was a man who came to serve.
I wonder how much my life is becoming more like that of Jesus? Putting Jesus at the centre surely means seeking to be like Him and that has to involve a process of change and transformation. It's not easy. There are bound to be clashes of heart and mind as so much of our lives revolves around the world and its priorities rather than God's. But let's be clear, Jesus is the most attractive life we could ever hope to meet. It's so worth it!
On Saturday 14th August we will have an away day as a group to help us build stronger foundations as a group of parishes working together. It’s all so easy to rush into planning more activities on such a day. Our priority though must also be to put Jesus at the centre to discover his heart for us. How does Jesus want to shape us as a church that we would better represent Him, that we would look more like Him? Please pray with me that we would allow Christ to build the church here in our group on the values of Cross in a circlehis heart.
Cross in a circle

Jesus be the centre.
Be the fire in our hearts.
Be the wind in these sails.
Be the reason that we live.
Jesus

Our vision day call for the coming year:
Acts 1 verse 8
“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you.
and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem,
and in Judea,
and in Samaria
and to the ends of the earth.”

Join the Away Day

On Saturday August 14th we will have an ‘Away Day’ for our group. It will take place in Kilmore parish hall. The purpose of the day is to look at our life as a group before God and with the vision day verse before us. Rev Brendan McCarthy will help us through the day as we have opportunity to worship God and seek his way forward. This day is open to all parishioners. It is important that men and women, different groups and ages in the life of the church are represented. It is also very important that each parish is represented by at least 3 or 4 folk. The more folk that can come along and contribute to the day the better. Our one united service over the summer will be in Ballyconnell at the end of August and will continue to build on the away day. To help us plan the catering we will need to know who is going. Please therefore let one of the following people know if you plan to attend. Gerty Woods, Lorna Graham, Minnie Mitten, Florence Bayliss, Linda Lovett.

Brendan McCarthyRev Brendan is continuing to gather information for a Parish profile that will help us look at our life and help a new Rector too. Many of you have already completed an opinion finder either at the Vision day or since. If you have not and would like to help please get a form in church or download a copy from the link below. Completed forms (these do not have your names) can be given to Brendan or Richard or simply left in vestries where they can be collected after services. Some folk have even posted them to the office. Harvest Concert and SupperHarvest Concert

It's not for a while yet. However if we can start thinking about possible contributions over the summer that would be great! I would especially encourage some folk who have not yet taken part in the concert! Perhaps you can join with some friends to take part in a short drama or song. Perhaps you could play an instrument or read a poem. It's always a great night and great fun in the middle of our harvest season.

The Word for Today

A number of men and women in the group find “The Word for Today” Daily Bible Notes, a very helpful way to spend a few moments each day. It’s great to spend time with our thoughts and with God. It can be so encouraging putting the business aside for a few minutes and reading a page from the Bible Notes. Sometimes the page will speak into our daily situation in a wonderful way. Below is a copy of one day from the Bible notes that I found very helpful recently. If you have not used Bible notes before it is a good insight into what they are like. If you would like your own set of Bible notes please have a word with Richard or with Beatrice Crawford who kindly distributes them.

This is the page from the 29th June:

House on a rock“Any one who listens … and Follows … is … Like a person who builds a house on solid rock" Matthew 7:24 NLT

John Ruskin said, 'The highest reward for man's toil is not what he gets for it, but what he becomes by it.' It's said that when Michael Eisner, head of the Disney Corporation, had plans drawn up for a house, one wall was so thin it almost buckled under its own weight. Another software billionaire's house had pine siding that rotted before the house was even completed. So, were they just too busy to notice? Architects say that people find construction details boring; they'd rather spend their money on glitzy stuff. Yet it's the foundation that determines the strength, stability, and ultimately the value of the house. Are you putting all your efforts into maintaining an image while neglecting foundational things such as your attitude, your integrity and your God-given purpose? Jesus said, "'These words I speak ...are foundational... work [them] into your life ... like a smart carpenter who built ... on solid rock ... nothing moved that house..."' (Matthew 7:24-25 TM). Houses built on sand are quick, cheap and easy; they provide temporary comfort and instant gratification. Building on rock is hard; it takes time, effort, foresight and perseverance but the results are worth it. If you're not sure what kind of house you're building, watch what happens when the storm hits! A house built on rock will withstand the same storm that levels those built on sand. Simply stated, there are no shortcuts. Character is the result of commitment, consistency, and building according to the principles of God's Word. When you make these things the foundation of your life you'll make it through any storm.

It is with sadness and shock we remember William Armstrong Bell. While William had moved to Fivemiletown many years ago he still maintained his links to Tomregan over the years and will be sadly missed. We do pray for William's wife Vida and the family as they try to make sense of his sudden death..

The Sunday School Prize Giving and Barbeque

It may not have been the warmest day but it was still a splendid day. It was great to see a good crowd out and the children contributed enormously to this special day in the life of our group. Our thanks to Rev Brendan for his help in the service playing the guitar and getting us involved in quite a bit of exercise! Some of the congregation were brilliant keeping up with a couple of tricky songs!
Thank you also to the forward team for their help providing the BBQ at Kildallon Rectory. These days don't just happen, they involve a lot of time, commitment and physical work! Thank you.
Below are just a few of the photographs taken on the day. The full set may be found here. The index page should open in a new window

Baptism

On 27th June we celebrated the baptism of Nathan Cormac Percival Dunleavy in Kildallon church.
It was great to so many folk of all ages in church and the service had a very real sense of joy. We pray for parents Cormac and Michelle. Parenting is never easy but as they seek to grow following Jesus they will help Nathan get a great future foundation.

Ballyconnell Community BBQTomregan Hall

Many thanks to folk who came and supported this community event to raise funds for the important redevelopment of Tomregan hall. It was a great event and it was super to see the crowd clearly enjoying the evening. Our thanks are due to all those who helped put this event on. It was a great effort and €1875 was raised.
We continue to pray for the redevelopment work of the hall. An application for the next stage of funding has now been submitted. We also pray for Newtowngore as they continue a similar process of funding applications for the important redevelopment of their hall.

Below are some of the photographs taken on the day. Click on them for slightly larger versions. They should open in new windows.

Lorraine is in Kenya!

kenya-mapKenyaLorraine Spotten will be in Kenya as you read this - there for a month. She helps at an orphanage and HIV Clinic in Limuru about 30 miles north west of Nairobi. In Kenya AIDS is largely responsible for creating more than a million orphans, of whom only 5% receive any form of support. Volunteers like Lorraine play an invaluable role in helping these children - with ages ranging between 4 and 15 - in the orphanages and homes. In addition to HIV and AIDS the children have often been affected by abuse, poverty or sickness and are in need of love and attention (TLC). Some particularly suffer from developmental problems and need individual attention to stimulate them. It is so good to hear Lorraine is taking this opportunity.
Lorraine has asked us to say a big thank you to all those who have helped her raise some €2300 for the trip.

The New Minister Called

A new clergyman was visiting in the homes of his parishioners. At one house it seemed obvious that someone was at home, but no answer came to his repeated knocks at the door.
Therefore, he took out a business card and wrote 'Revelation 3:20' on the back of it and put it in the letter box.
When the offering was processed the following Sunday, he found that his card had been returned. Added to it was this cryptic message, 'Genesis 3:10.'
Reaching for his Bible to check out the citation, he broke up in gales of laughter. Revelation 3:20 begins 'Behold, I stand at the door and knock.' Genesis 3:10 reads, 'I heard your voice in the garden and I was afraid for I was naked.'

Birthday Card!

Inspirational speaker Dr. Wayne Dyer still remembers the card his kids gave him for his 64th birthday. The front said, "Inside is a message from God."
Pleased they finally appreciated his work, he opened it to read, "See you soon!"
