Culture Shock

Church of Ireland Cross

Thumbing through an old prayer journal I came across a list of things I thanked God for in 1997. One of sentences thanked God for the acceptance of our marriage by our families. Yes, I was newly married and one of the important things about the moment I joined my life to Pauline in marriage is that I also joined her family.
Yet joining her family was also I confess a culture shock for us all. Have you ever experienced culture shock, when the place you find yourself is so different to your home surroundings that you love and know. You seem to enter another world and you feel uncomfortable. It's a feeling some of you would know entering a large city or foreign country. When I first visited Malaysia to visit my parents in law I found it very difficult. The heat, the language, the food, the smells - everything was so different.
Our Family in MalaysiaMy family in Malaysia know that they live in a world that is foreign to mine - a world where I need help adjusting. To help me they take time and effort seeking to help make my stay as comfortable as possible.
They spot some of my struggles. They know I might struggle with chopsticks so I get plates, fork and a spoon. They make sure food is not too spicy and bring in special food for us to try that would be easier for me than the plainer food they would usually have.
They also make sacrifices from their normal routines. They know the heat is uncomfortable so we get the room with air-conditioning. A lot more conversations will be in English rather than in Chinese so that I can join in. They also sacrifice their car for a few days so that we can get about. I'm also very aware that my parents in law are very gracious when I make mistakes in this foreign land, such as when I forget to remove my shoes entering the house.
In so many small ways we are made to feel so special. Each time I visit I am made to feel more and more part of the family. I can honestly say that with each visit it gets easier and I enjoy my time more. They have welcomed me in such a wonderful and gracious way.
Presently I am doing a lot of preparation for couples and young people exploring baptism for infants and confirmation. Like my marriage they are publicly committing themselves to joining another life - Jesus. Baptism and confirmation are both a commitment to a life with him, a deep relationship with him, Like my marriage they also find themselves joined to another family - the family of the church.
As I look at our churches I confess that I don't see the number of families and young people out as I would long to see. Some I would suggest find experience of the church a struggle. Like me and my family in Malaysia, there can also be some sense of entering another world as they enter the life of the church. To those not used to church our ways can be so foreign and strange. It is so easy to feel out of place and uncomfortable. As I think of the welcome help, sacrifices and treats provided by my in-laws I am challenged.
How much do we need to make adjustments from our normal way of doing things to make newcomers and younger generations really welcome?
What sacrifices are we prepared to make in order to help our church to grow?
What efforts will we need to make to understand the needs of new generations whose world may be very different to that in which we grew up?
In what ways will we spoil the newcomers to make them really feel welcome?

These are challenging questions we must continue to look at together and do something about.
I am aware this Easter as last there are a number of services planned with younger families at their heart. These are essential that our young people and families can begin to experience the message of Easter for themselves. They may or may not be well attended but they are a priority nonetheless. These are a small step but important step on our journey as Christ's family.

Emergency Cover Thank you

May I say a big thank you to those who helped to make the Newsletter come out during my absence last month. I understand a great little team was in action! Thank you.

Looking Ahead - Vision Day

April 25th will mark our annual vision day. Please please make every effort to support the day. While we continue to pray for a new Rector it is so important we continue to plan ahead. The vision day is a unique opportunity in our year for the whole church family (of all ages) to look forward with a clear sense of unity and purpose.
The service will be at 3pm in Ballyconnell. We will then move into the hall where there will be food and opportunity to look at the past and coming year. Rev Paul Hoey will be with us to help us make the most of this key day in our year

Lent Jars of Grace

Jar of Grace fullIt is great to visit homes and see the jars of grace in action so to speak! I just read from a story from the youth Bible notes "Word 4U 2Day" that reminds me that how even our little can be huge to someone else. During one World War 2 mission an RAF pilot came under attack from Nazi anti-aircraft guns. These guns were deadly because they could fire very rapidly, they had a long range and worst of all, they fired 75mm shells that would explode on impact. Amazingly, even though his fuel tank was hit the plane didn't explode, and the pilot was able to return home successfully and make a bumpy landing. WWII Fighter Bomber

After the raid the pilot asked one of the crew to try and locate the German shell, so he could keep it as a souvenir. After investigating, the crew member came back saying he had found not just one but eleven shells in the fuel tank! They were all clean and harmless and with one exception empty. The exception carried a carefully rolled piece of paper. On it a message had been scrawled in the Czech language: “This is all we can do for you now.” A brave worker forced to work on an ammunition assembly line had disarmed the shells so they wouldn't explode and had scribbled that note. He couldn't stop the war but he could save one plane. He couldn't do much, but he could do something and he did.

Beryl BakerLast year Beryl used much of our gift for medical supplies for those whom she ministers to in the Chaco. Our seemingly small gifts could make a huge difference as they practically share the good news of Christ. Please bring your jars of grace to out Easter services.

Each coin, no matter how small can make a difference. Let us give together and pray together and together we can make a difference.

Sadness and Joy

Cross

Rhynn & Madeline HewsonIt was with great sadness that we said farewell to Rhynn Hewson. Rhynn was a well loved parishioner of Templeport who gave much of his time and energy to parish life. Rhynn had been unwell for some while and will be missed greatly by parishioners and his family. In the midst of the grief we especially remember Rhynn's wife Madeline who has also been unwell for some time.

Hewson twinsThe Hewson family became bearers of joy when Ivan & Lorna Hewson rejoiced in the birth of twins who were borne on Tuesday 23rd February. Both are doing great and we pray for the whole family in the time of huge change.

There was also sadness and joy remembering the life of Mary Jane (Cissy) McCaffrey. A parishioner of St Macartin’s Cathedral Enniskillen, Cissy died in her 107th year! The funeral service took place in Kinawley.

Coffee Morning and Cake SaleCoffee cup

A cake sale and coffee morning is to be held in Tomregan hall on Saturday 27th March from 10am - 1pm. All proceeds will go towards Forward funds which help to run special events such as the Sunday school prize giving, Barbeque and the Senior’s Christmas dinner. This is a whole group event in which we can each play a small part. Please come along and support this fun morning. Particular help is required with baking cakes!
Please bake as you feel able. Coffee and chocolate cakes, sponge cakes, carrot cakes all go down a treat at an event such as this while bread - soda bread, wheaten bread also go down very well. Obviously the more cakes we have the more we can sell. Please bring cakes for sale to Ballyconnell hall on the Friday evening from 2pm. If you are not a baker please still come along and support the morning if you possibly can. Your willingness and generosity are really appreciated. .

Nonagenarian celebrates Birthday

It was with great joy that Rosetta Arnold celebrated her 90th birthday on 18th February with numerous friends and almost all her family around including her sons and daughter from Canada. The celebrations went on for a week and culminated when 8 members of the ICA visited and spent a pleasant evening .
The photo taken at her birthday party in Lough Bawn Hotel, Killeshandra shows Rosetta with her birthday cake. (You may just be able to make out the candle figures ‘90’ in reverse)
It is a grand age and we praise God for Rosetta.

Hot Cross Buns

'Hot Cross Buns' is an English nursery rhyme, but was originally a street vendors' Easter song and street cry referring to the spiced English bun associated with Good Friday:

Hot cross buns,
Hot cross buns,
one ha' penny,
two ha' penny,
hot cross buns.

If you have no daughters,

Hot Cross Buns Recipe

Description

Traditional spiced, sticky glazed fruit buns with pastry crosses. Served as a classic Easter treat, the buns can also be enjoyed at any time of year.

Ingredients

For the buns
625g/1.3lb strong white flour, plus extra for dusting
1 tsp salt
2 tsp ground mixed spice
45g/ 1.5 oz unsalted butter, cut into cubes, plus extra for greasing
85g/3oz sugar
1 lemon, zest only
1½ tsp fast-action yeast
1 free-range egg
275ml/10fl oz tepid milk
125g/4oz mixed dried fruit
For the topping
2 tbsp plain flour
vegetable oil, for greasing
1 tbsp golden syrup, gently heated, for glazing.

Hot Cross Bun

Method

1. For the buns, sieve the flour, salt and ground mixed spice into a large mixing bowl, then rub in the butter using your fingertips. Make a well in the centre of the mixture, then add the sugar and lemon zest and yeast.
2. Beat the egg and add to the flour with the tepid milk. Mix together to a form a soft, pliable dough.
3. Turn out the dough onto a lightly floured work surface. Carefully work the mixed dried fruit into the dough until well combined. Knead lightly for 5 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
4. Grease a large, warm mixing bowl with butter. Shape the dough into a ball and place it into the prepared bowl, then cover with a clean tea towel and set aside in a warm place for one hour to prove.
5. Turn out the proved dough onto a lightly floured work surface and knock back the dough. Shape it into a ball again and return it to the bowl, then cover again with the tea towel and set aside for a further 30 minutes to rise.
6. Turn out the dough onto a lightly floured work surface and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball, then flatten slightly into a bun shape using the palms of your hands. Cover the buns again with the tea towel and set aside to rest for 5-10 minutes.
7. Grease a baking tray with butter and transfer the buns to the tray. Wrap the tray with the buns on it loosely in greaseproof paper, then place inside a large polythene bag. Tie the end of the bag tightly so that no air can get in and set aside in a warm place for a further 40 minutes to rise.
8. Preheat the oven to 240C/475F/Gas 8.
9. Meanwhile, for the topping, mix the plain flour to a smooth paste with 2 tablespoons of cold water.
10. When the buns have risen, remove the polythene bag and the greaseproof paper. Spoon the flour mixture into a piping bag and pipe a cross on each bun.
11. Transfer the buns to the oven and bake for 8-12 minutes, or until pale golden-brown. As soon as you remove the buns from the oven, brush them with the hot golden syrup, then set aside to cool on a wire rack.

Makes 12 buns. Preparation time over 2 hours. Cooking time 10 to 30 minutes.

(With thanks to B.B.C. Recipes)
