Where do we place ourselves?
Church of Ireland  Cross
If you watch the news you can’t help but have heard about Swine flu. It has spread rapidly across the world. It could be highly infectious and it may affect large groups of people and folk are worried about it. We also have received practical advice some of which is shared later in the newsletter.
A natural consequence of all the advice and media is that everyone is thinking about where they go and who they meet. Should I go on that flight or to that meeting with a large crowd? Should I go or avoid? What’s the risk? Where do I place myself?
The question of where we place ourselves lies at the heart of our faith too. Are we placing ourselves in situations of risk where God can shape us and challenge us or are we just playing it safe?
As the summer draws in life in the church changes gear again and the question is asked; Where do I place myself?
In our Sunday worship do I choose the week that suits me and my preference, or do I come what may because Christ who gave all deserves our all. RISK and my life may change as I discover worship is about him and not about me.
In our Harvest celebrations do I place myself beyond my wee corner and join in worship in churches other than my own. RISK and my life will be richer in our fellowship as a group.
In our autumn Bible course do I run the risk of meeting God in a new way, perhaps even for the first time or do I stay at home where I’m safe and comfortable and the TV‘s good? RISK and my life may be forever and wonderfully changed.
In our prayer meetings do I face the fear of embarrassment in going to something new? RISK and enter into the fuel of the Christian life.
Do we choose a place where I risk offering our talents and gifts to God or do I hide them because I fear what others may say. RISK and we may discover God can use me so much more than I ever could imagine!
Christ has so much to offer us but only when we place ourselves in a position to receive.
I’m increasingly struck by the fact that Jesus placed himself in the greatest situations of risk and never played it safe. In this time of vacancy it would be very easy to sit back and wait for things to change, wait for the new Rector to come to wake us up again. Alternatively we can place ourselves in places of growth, challenge and life that shape a better future for us all . I pray we choose life!

A BIG THANK YOU

Missionary News from the Chaco
As we are all aware communication with Beryl is not easy due to the extreme rural situation in which she works. However the good news is that Beryl has received the money we donated in our Lent appeal. Beryl is tremendously grateful for the generosity of the people of the Swanlinbar Kildallon group of Parishes. The bulk of the money will be spent on pharmaceuticals so we can be sure it will be making a real difference in the lives of people with whom Beryl meets. Please pray for 35 year old nurse Wendy Power who is going out for 6 months to work alongside Beryl.
A Sams colleague Caroline White who is in a different part of Paraguay fowarded Beryl's news and commented, " I had a lovely time looking at the Swanlinbar etc website. What beautiful churches and counties you live in!"
Sams Update
Dennis Johnston our Ireland SAMS LINK is coming over again in September to update us and help us explore our link with Beryl further. The date will be announced shortly. Please come and support this meeting. To date the United Vestries have met with Dennis but this meeting will be open to all.

Saints Alive Life in the Spirit.

Having done Christianity Explored these last 3 years we will be exploring another course this autumn that I believe builds on Christianity explored very well. Having explored the life of Jesus in Mark’s gospel this course takes us into the book of Acts. It’s a gripping account of the growth of the early church that can teach us all so much.
At whatever stage of the Christian journey you will find this is a great course for you. If you are exploring what Christianity is all about but not yet committed to Jesus it’s for you. Similarly if you are a committed follower of Jesus wanting to grow in Christ this also is very much for you.
The course will be running in Ballyconnell Parish minor hall and this is for everyone in the group. It will run on Wednesday evenings beginning from October and runs for 8 weeks.
Meetings will start at 8.30pm with a cup of tea and informal chat, presentation sometimes using a DVD and discussion. Come along if you want to grow in faith.
Please let Richard know if you intend to come along as there is some material that needs to be ordered in advance for each participant.

Some practical advice regarding Influenza a(H1N1) Swine Flu.

Rates in Ireland are low so we need to keep a sense of proportion and common sense. If you feel ill and display influenza-like symptoms stay at home. Do not come to church services until you feel well. The symptoms to be aware of in the case of the H1N1 strain of flu include fever, cough, sore throat, muscle pains and gastrointestinal symptoms.
Wash your hands frequently with soap and water. Hand to hand contact is a way to spread the virus so please greet people with clean hands. This will minimise the risk this carries although the spread is first and foremost respiratory.
In Holy Communion Communicants may choose to avoid the common cup and receive the bread only. This is acceptable and may be advisory if there is a significant rise in infection locally.
Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing
Dispose of dirty tissues quickly and carefully
Wash hard surfaces such as kitchen worktops.
Tell our children and others to follow this advice.
The situation is obviously a changing one and if there is a significant increase in cases in Ireland advice for our context may change.

Joy and Tears Mixed Together

It was with great sadness that we finally said our farewells to Geoff, Naomi, Beth, Jack & Sam at the Sunday school Prize giving service in June. Yet through the tears and pain PRAISE GOD! It was a wonderful day with some 300 people jammed into the church. May I take this opportunity to say a big thank you to everyone who helped make the day so special. So many contributed in different ways not least the Forward group who organised a great BBQ to follow. The sun shone and the food stretched! God was so good to us.
With Geoff’s farewell it might be easy to overlook the Prize giving, yet the presence of the Sunday school and their contribution really helped our worship. A big thank you to the parents and Sunday school leaders for your help not just on that Sunday but throughout the year. Thank you also to all those who helped with presentations and speeches.

For many the farewell journey continued to Lurgan to Geoff’s institution. Thirty parishioners went on a coach and many others went by car. It was so helpful to see Geoff and the family welcomed into their new local church family. Everyone was struck by how different the church was and a few joked that the huge Jethro community centre bore an uncanny resemblance to Swanlinbar Sunday school hall! It all seemed so large and grand yet it was immediately evident that Geoff was God’s man for this place and was fitting in very well indeed. Now we pray for God’s choice to replace Geoff and continue to hold Geoff and the family in our prayers.

Prayer Meetings

Increasingly I am convinced that the work of prayer is the indispensable lifeblood of our group.
Prayer is not just something we can do. IT IS THE BEST THING we can do as we seek a life of faith. Be assured everyone is very welcome. Nobody has to pray out loud unless they want to. The meetings are very informal in style with a welcome cuppa to start.

Ballyconnell and Newtowngore Parish Halls

Our 1st meetings with the Rural Development Council grant administrator have taken place. This looked at our training needs that will help us improve our halls enormously. Completing the training which will involve one evening a month is essential if we are to enter into strand 2 where we should access 60,000 euros for each hall. Both parishes will need a committed group of folk (not necessarily vestry members) who are interested in developing the hall prepared to join in the training. If you are interested and would like to know more please have a word with Roy Mitten (Ballyconnell) or Florence Bayliss (Newtowngore/Corrawallen). It really is a small commitment for such a reward. Let's make the most of this tremendous opportunity.

THE BULGARIAN WOOLLY PROJECT

A BIG THANK YOU TO YOU ALL

Matt and our Bulgarian interpreter and partner, Magdalena, took us to the 'Internat' (residential children's school for mentally handicapped children aged 4 - 18) in the town of Svilengrad, near the Turkish border.

On the right are Magdalena and Mila Pisyoseva (Director) of the home, where we left a generous amount of clothes, toys and school material.

Greg Herb of the American Peace Corp pictured left with some of the children in the classroom works at an orphanage in the town of Veliki Preslav, on the north-east fringe of the Balkan range. It houses about 80 children age range of 4-19, and is in great need of support.
The boys sometimes have to wear girls' clothes to keep warm. He also received quite a lot of your gifts.

Some of the things were taken to other US Peace Corps Workers - Kelsey in Topolovgrad and Alexa in Pishtigovo. Remaining school books, pens, crayons, etc, were given to the very deprived primary school in Biser.

More information, photos and maps may be found at: www.magbaztravels.com/content/view/824/196/

Here is an email Greg Herb sent to me soon after my return:

Hi Patricia!

Thank you so much for the materials that you and your church have collected and sent over here to the orphanage in Veliki Preslav, Bulgaria!

I truly appreciate the amazing gift you all have given to the orphanage here, and the kids here have definitelyenjoying these donations! A large part of my work here at the orphanage involves groups to get the children caught up in Bulgarian, maths, and other subjects, as well as simple art, sports, andto occupy their free. It is so rare that the children get new things, and the clothes, games, and other supplies that you have sent here have really made a difference in the amount of things we can do together. These supplies are definitely making a difference in the quality of life for the orphans in here in Veliki Preslav.

It is so exciting to know that people in Ireland are willing to help those less fortunate in Europe and around the world.drive towards volunteerism and compassion for others who areless fortunatesomething thatbecoming somewhat rare these days in our increasingly fast-paced lives. With your help we are able to give opportunities to children who have not been given the chance to excel and thusly are improving the future of Europe as a whole. The "Woolly Project" is one of the greatest things that I have had the pleasure of being involved in, and proves to me that there are people out there who really care about the less fortunate around the world.

You can catch up with my service and experience as a Peace Corps volunteer in Bulgaria at greginbulgaria.blogspot.com. I love meeting new people and anyone is free to contact me at greginbulgariaatgmaildotcom. (To reduce the Spam or rubbish mail please change the at to @ and the dot to a . in the email address)

How about another Smile?

The Joys of New Birth

A four-year-old boy accompanied his pregnant mother to the gynecologist's office. When mother heaved a sigh and clutched her stomach, her son looked alarmed. "Mommy, what is it?" he asked. "The baby brother you're going to have is kicking," his mother explained. "He's probably getting restless," the youngster decided. "Why don't you swallow a toy?"

I was born by cesarean section . . . but not so you'd notice. It's just that when I leave a house, I go out through the window.

Giving birth is like pushing a flaming log through your nostril.

The mother of three notoriously unruly youngsters was asked whether or not she'd have children if she had it to do over again. "Sure," she replied, "but not the same ones."

Taking care of your baby is easy, as long as you don't have anything else to do.

A baby is God's opinion that the world should go on. -- Carl Sandburg

Church of Ireland Cross   Prayer Points for the rest of June, July and the begining of August  Church of Ireland Cross

Let us continue to listen to God in prayer and develop a daily routine of praying for the following on the day of the week indicated;

Monday:
Pray for the appointment of a new Rector who will help lead our Parishes forward in discovering Christ and his ways more. We especially pray for our nominators who have the difficult task of seeking the person we pray of God's choosing and anointing.;
Tuesday:
Pray for those struggling with the pain of illness. As we pray for healing we also pray for families who share in the pains, joys and care;
Wednesday:
Pray for farmers in this worrying time of wet weather. We pray for spells of dry weather for growth and a bountiful harvest;
Thursday:
Pray for those who are missing loved ones through the pain of death. We ask that the sure and certain hope of Christ would lighten our darkness!
Friday:
Pray for young people as they receive exam results. Grant wisdom to those making difficult choices. We pray for all who are experiencing change of class, school, college or employment.;
Saturday:
Remember those far away. For Geoff and family in Lurgan, Beryl Baker and Wendy Power in the Chaco region of Paraguay;
Sunday:
Pray that our life of worship to God would truly grow. May we come with expectation of meeting with Christ and his renewing.
