What is call? (A reflection on 1 Samuel 16)

Church of Ireland  Cross

I’ve been asked this question by a good number of people over the last couple of weeks as we all come to terms with the announcement that I have been called to minister in Shankill Parish, Lurgan. People are genuinely shocked and are looking for answers and I really feel rather inadequate in responding to such questions.
I have shared with people how this call has come out of nowhere. I have explained how I felt utterly inadequate at the approach of a prominent parish in our church to a relative nobody. I have explained how at a human level it just does not seem like the right time for the Group or indeed for our family. I have wept tears of pain as I have sought to explain that for me there is no earthly explanation why this should happen at this time and in this way. The only explanation is that God has called me in a very clear and distinct manner, such that failure to respond would be utter disobedience.
But what is call?
Well, in beginning to answer that question, I would like us to journey back to the early days of kingship in Israel. The first king of Israel, Saul, has lost favour in the sight of the Lord. The Lord tells his prophet Samuel to go to the house of Jesse of Bethlehem for He has chosen one of his sons to be the next king. Samuel is reluctant to do this – the time is not right as Saul is still king. But eventually Samuel finds himself gazing upon the sons of Jesse one after another utterly convinced that the next king must be in his presence – these are fine, strong, young men. But the Bible says, But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” Eventually, Samuel asks of Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?” Of course we know the story, that the shepherd boy David is in the fields tending the sheep when he is summoned before Samuel. Then the Lord said to Samuel, “Rise and anoint him; he is the one.”
This is an incredible story, but what do we learn about call in this passage?
Well, we learn that call is not about outward appearance – but it is about having a heart for God. We learn that call is not about right timing as man would understand it – but about God’s perfect timing.
We learn that call is about listening carefully for the still small voice of God in one ear and filtering the shouts of circumstances and reason in the other. It is not easy discerning God’s call, far less easy responding! But without obedience there will be no blessing. I believe that I am being totally obedient in responding with my YES to this call of God at this time when so many other things are screaming NO.
My prayer is that throughout this whole process we will continue to listen to the voice of God calling us all into deeper service and in responding faithfully and obediently we will continue to know His blessing in our lives and churches.

Birthday Approaches!!

We have chatted, laughed and joked over tea of coffee. We have listened to songs that help us give thanks to God and we have prayed - sometimes out loud if we felt able - sometimes in the quiet of our hearts. We have prayed for our concerns from news on the TV to families, friends and church. Now a year of prayer meetings approaches after Easter! How I thank God for helping us discover this place for prayer in the life of our group. Remember the rowing boat? Our church is like a boat with two oars. One is prayer, the other is our Christian work of loving witness and service. Both are essential. Otherwise we go around in circles or crash in to the riverbank.
One of the joys of praying together has been meeting in peoples homes. If anyone would like to offer their home for an hour's meeting in our second year please let me know. As the birthday approaches it will be a good time to review and look forward. More in the next newsletter.

EASTER

How do children share in the Easter story? It's the most important part of the Christian year and yet there is a danger our children miss out on experiencing its suffering, wonder, sadness and joy. Therefore without changing our present service format I would like to begin to try new ways to include as many folk as possible. May I suggest the following to help us explore Easter for all ages.

Jar of Grace

Jar of Grace nearly empty

How are you getting on with your Jar of Grace? I hope that you haven’t forgotten and get red cheeks when you read this! If you have forgotten, then please don’t worry, just get a glass jar and place it on the meal table as soon as you can. Then each meal time place some money in your jar and these daily offerings will be received at our Easter services and forwarded to our Mission Partner, Beryl Baker in the Chaco region of Paraguay. It is great that we have now made firm this partnership with Beryl and can partner with her in her work and ministry. Please do remember Beryl and those whom she serves by placing a coin in the jar at each meal time and saying a silent prayer for them.
(The Jar of Grace appeal, together with the loose offering at each of the mid-week Lenten services, in our Group of Parishes, will be going to the work of the “Chaco Project” a project sponsored by the South American Missionary Society).

Forward Choir

Many of you will recall that we have had two Diocesan celebration services in the Slieve Russell Hotel as part of our Forward! initiative. Well, there is another celebration just around the corner on Sunday 17th May at 3 pm, also in the Slieve Russell Hotel – more details of this will follow in subsequent newsletters. However, as part of the day, it is hoped to have a Diocesan choir leading the singing and to have as many Parishes as possible represented within this choir. Dean Raymond Ferguson has very kindly agreed to arrange some practice dates so that the choir can be well rehearsed for the 17th! Those who would like to participate in the choir must attend one of the following practices but would be welcome at more than one if they desire:

Monday 20th April 8 pm Florencecourt
Wednesday 22nd April 8 pm St John’s, Longford
Thursday 23rd April 8 pm Calry Church, Sligo
Friday 24th April 8 pm Kilmore Cathedral.

Confirmation

A number of parents have queried whether there will be confirmation in our Group next year. The normal cycle for confirmation would mean that there should be a service in first part of 2010. This will continue to be the case so anyone seeking confirmation should contact Richard as he will be carrying out the preparation from Autumn onwards. A date has yet to be set as the Bishop is still on sabbatical, returning at the end of this month.

Aid for Orphans in Bulgaria

After Easter, Patricia Tribelhorn of Templeport Parish, will be travelling in her motor home to Bulgaria. At first glance you might think that is an unusual holiday destination, but Patricia is not going for any holiday!
In December 2008, Patricia first heard of a project called The Bulgarian Woolly Project Team. Essentially this project gets aid to the most needy children, including orphans, in deprived areas of the country. Her heart went out to these children and their plight so she determined to do something about it. Patricia intends to take as much aid with her as she can and you can help her in the following ways:
You could knit a woolly hat, mittens or scarf;
You could buy a pair of woolly tights for a little girl;
You could buy a rubber, pencil, sharpener, crayons and exercise book for use in school;
You could send a soft toy;
You could send a jigsaw puzzle;
You could send good, clean, warm children’s clothing;
You could send a reading or colouring book.
There is lots you could do and Patricia would very much appreciate any help you feel able to offer. If you would like support this worthy cause then give Patricia a ring on 049 9523536, or her mobile number 087 9203301.

Vestry meetings

Would all church members please take note of the following meetings of the general vestry of each Parish and, if possible, make it a priority to attend or send an apology (if your name is proposed for election and you are not in attendance and have not offered an apology, then technically your name cannot go forward);

In order to hold office within the Church of Ireland, and indeed have voting rights at the annual Easter Vestry, each member should be a registered vestry member. The register of vestry members is revised once each year and is now open for that purpose. Anyone wishing to have their name included on the register must complete a declaration. If you wish to be included on this list of vestry members then please contact Geoff and he will arrange for the relevant declaration to be completed.

George Hamilton IV Gospel Concert

Sincere thanks are due to everyone who came along on the evening of 14th February to Templeport Community for our Country Gospel Concert with George Hamilton IV. George was so gracious in his manner and delighted us all with a selection of good old fashioned country numbers, gospel songs and favourite hymns. When we sang that beautiful hymn “What a friend we have in Jesus” I felt as if I could have reached out and touched the Holy Spirit, such was the sense of presence of God. What a man, and what a blessing to us all. The evening was organised at extremely short notice as George had a spare night in his itinerary which cropped up unexpectedly.
Through his willingness to serve and your generosity we were able to raise just over €1, 125 for St Christopher’s Hospice, Cavan. Thanks are also due to the team of volunteers who helped out in preparation for the evening.

There are lots more pictures taken at the concert on the Group News Page at:

Group Dinner

Our Forward! steering group have decided to organise a dinner /dance for the whole of our Group in the Seven Horse Shoes, Belturbet on Friday 24th April 2009. The whole idea of the evening is to bring us all together for a social evening, with the emphasis on fun-raising rather than fund raising! The evening will commence at 8pm with a 4 course meal including soup, beef main course, desserts and tea and coffee. Our after dinner speaker has yet to be arranged but the emphasis will be on light entertainment with a spiritual message to conclude. And the evening is just beginning with dancing to Nigel Livingstone, formerly of Kildallon Parish. If anyone is interested in attending then they need to get their tickets early as they are being sold on a first come, first served basis at the bargain price of €25 each. Anyone wishing to buy a ticket should contact a member of the Forward! steering group below:

Mission Update

At the recent meeting of our United Vestry it was agreed unanimously that we establish an indefinite link with Beryl Baker of the South American Missionary Society. This represents a huge step for us as a Group in so many different ways as we learn more of her work and in so doing become much more involved in how God is at work in His church in another continent. In real terms what this means is that once a year, our Lent collections and Jar of Grace will be forwarded to SAMS to support her in her work – be assured that her project will receive every cent/penny of the money you give. Additionally, we agreed to send 11% of the monies raised to pay for the operating costs of SAMS. This will come from Parish funds, so if the money raised throughout Lent is €3, 000, we will send a further €330 in total from Parish funds. This is not asking Parishes or people to give more money, but simply being much more intentional about how we distribute money we are already raising.
We hope to establish personal contact with Beryl in the very near future and perhaps get an update on her work for the next newsletter. But in the meantime do continue to pray for her and those whom she encounters in her ministry.

Compassion Update

Our Sunday School have decided to sponsor a child through the Christian group, Compassion. Compassion do great work with children throughout the world, including provision of health care, education, Christian teaching and clothing. This is an initiative which is being supported by each of our Sunday Schools throughout our Group. In this way we hope to build a sense of shared ownership of a project and nurture within our children a Christian sense of our duty towards our neighbour. The world we live in today is very “me-focussed”, through this development we hope to challenge this way of thinking with the love of God for all people.
If you are a parent of a child attending Sunday School, we would encourage you to support this initiative by sending 50¢ / 50p along with your child each week they attend. Please do not see this as a fee but rather a love offering which will be a blessing to someone in a much less fortunate situation than all of us. The cost of sponsorship is €30 per month, something which is easily manageable for us given the great attendance at our Sunday Schools recently. We hope to publish some details of the child we will be sponsoring in the next month or so.

Thursday:
Pray for the planting of faith memories in our children and young people that share hope, wonder and joy;
Friday:
Pray for those who share in pain of lost loved ones. That they would experience Christ's presence in the darkest times;
