Church of Ireland  Cross

A reflection on changing patterns of ministry by our student, Hazel Hicks

‘The understanding of the role of the Spirit mirrors the role of Jesus himself in John’s gospel, as the one who takes the tradition and makes it new, without contradicting or devaluing what has gone before’

As I read these words of John Witcombe, the author of my present study module on ‘The Holy Spirit’, I felt as if they were speaking to me and the new parish group of Kildallon / Swanlinbar. After 28 years as a Diocesan Reader I’m now training for ordination and as part of that training I’m on parish placement in the group. This is not contradicting or devaluing my experience as a Reader, rather it’s another step on my vocation journey, a step that was possible due to my previous experience.

The words also spoke to me about what the leadership team of the Parish group are aiming to achieve ‘taking the tradition and making it new’. Changes such as service times, Holy Communion on different Sundays, united services, not worshipping in their local church every Sunday and having a student on placement have posed challenges for some people.

The changes in no way contradict or devalue the worship or traditions of the past rather they take account of changing numbers of people who live in the area and attend worship as well as staff available to lead worship and provide pastoral care. The new grouping builds on the firm foundation of hard work and dedication by so many people and like Jesus in His ministry it takes tradition and makes it new.

In the team ministry each of the leadership teams’ gifts, skills and experiences are shared, valued and encouraged, which means that the parishioners benefit from a wide range of skills and experiences.

What the team are working towards is summed up by further words from my study and could well sum up Jesus’ ministry ‘reinterpreting the old to give it contemporary significance and that of revealing the new in a way consistent with the old’

Thank you to the leadership team and the parishioners of the group for the very warm welcome, support and encouragement which I have received, I really look forward to the months ahead, working with you as part of the group parish family. I have no doubt that like Jesus, you the parishioners will take up the challenge of change and ‘take traditional and make it new’ knowing that the Holy Spirit will lead us into new truth by encouraging and supporting us.

Fancy going for a bit of a jog!!Jogger

On 29th October this year, I will be stepping out, or should I say striding out, once again as I prepare to take part in Dublin City Marathon. You may have seen me out pounding the roads already, and wondered what I was up to – now it all makes sense. In running the 26.2 mile course I will be hoping to raise sponsorship for two very worthwhile causes, Macmillan Cancer Relief and The Jack & Jill Trust.

Macmillan improves the lives of people affected by cancer. They help with all the things that people affected by cancer want and need, from specialist health care and information to practical, emotional and financial support.

Amongst other things, the Jack & Jill Foundation “provides early intervention home respite to families with children up to the age of 4, with severe developmental delay who require extended care.”

Macmillan Cancer Relief serves those affected by cancer in Northern Ireland and is dependant on voluntary donations for 99% of its work. The Jack & Jill Foundation helps families in the Republic of Ireland and relies entirely upon voluntary donations.

If you would like to sponsor me please make contact and let me know as I feel it is important that people do not feel visitations in the lead up to the marathon have an underlying purpose. Or, if you would like to take a sponsor card and help to raise sponsorship for these causes then that would be very much appreciated.

There will be a social / fundraiser at some stage later in the autumn at which cheques will be handed over to representatives from both charities.

Harvest supper and concert

Don’t forget about our inaugural Group Harvest Supper and Variety Concert. This should be a brilliant night, but only if we all come together and contribute according to our abilities. For some that will mean providing supper as you may not be a “platform person” – we will be discussing arrangements for supper at the MU opening service. For others you just can’t wait to get that microphone in you hand to perform for us on the night! But whatever your gift or talent is we need to know about it, so please do let me know what you would like to contribute to the night – so far I still have 3 confirmed acts for the night – unless there are some more, it will be a poor show!! In an effort to try and move things along a little, someone from each Parish will be asked to rally support so you may receive a call asking for your support – please respond generously.

Harvest project

Our Group Harvest project for this year will be the Asia Floods Emergency Appeal through Christian Aid. It has been evident to all of us over this past summer how much harm can be done by rain. I have observed many fields literally tramped due to wet ground as farmers struggled to gather in the silage harvest. We have all seen the images on television of Sheffield and other major cities in England which ground to a halt due to flooding.
But how many of us will be aware of the utter devastation which has affected literally millions of Indians in South East Asia. Whole villages have been destroyed, hundreds of people killed, livelihoods lost ….and no insurance company to fall back on. For €70 / £47 four families can be fed for a week in Bihar, India. Just imagine the difference your gift could make to someone in the worst affected areas. Please give generously this Harvest as we reflect on what has been a terrible year for many, many people. All of our loose collections at each of our Harvest services will be going towards this appeal.

Group Youth Fellowship

Our first night for Youth Fellowship is tonight from 6.30pm to 9pm in Ballyconnell Minor Hall. The program for this evening is very, very informal – watch a DVD, eat some pizza and get to know one another a little better. Youth Fellowship is for the whole of our Group and for anyone from a neighbouring Parish who might like to come along. You need to be 12 or over and for those seeking confirmation next May, it is mandatory that you attend Youth Fellowship. Parents, please support this initiative by bringing your young people along as youth work is of primary importance in the Church and in the world we live today.
After the initial meeting of our new group on Sunday 16th Sept, there will be a break for the Harvest season, resuming at 6.30pm on Sunday 21st October at 6.30pm. The group will normally meet on the 1st, 3rd & 4th Sunday of each month from 6.30pm to 8.30pm sharp.

Confirmation

Since last writing regarding our forthcoming service I have only heard of one candidate who is seeking confirmation – I somehow suspect that there may be more, but I haven’t heard of them!! Please let me know if your child/young person is intending to present themselves for confirmation so that the necessary preparations can be made. And please also note that attendance at our Group Youth Fellowship is a necessary part of that preparation.

Meeting for all Sunday School Teachers

Would all Sunday School teachers please note that there will be a training evening at 8.30pm on Tuesday 2nd Oct in Ballyconnell Minor Hall. The purpose of this evening is to introduce all of our teachers to the new Scripture Union material which we will be using across our Group. The purpose of using this material is as follows;
Consistency of teaching across our Group;
The material is themed on the passages that will be read and preached on in Church thereby enabling discussion between parents and children regarding what they learnt in Sunday School;
Using the same material means that teachers will be able to support one another;
The teaching contained within the material is of a high quality.
Please support our Teachers in what can be a difficult leadership role. Affirm them in their work and bring your children along to Church each Sunday.
Sunday School will resume in our Churches following the conclusion of our Harvest celebrations in our Group.

Samaritan’s Purse Present

This is a Christian organisation who through an annual shoe box appeal, have touched the lives of literally tens of thousands of children from under-privileged and deprived backgrounds in Eastern Europe at Christmas time. You will find enclosed with this Newsletter, a leaflet which explains how you can support this extremely worthy cause, but in summary the following are some pointers;
Get a shoe box
Cover it in wrapping paper (wrap box and lid separately so that the lid can be lifted off);
Place a label on the outside of the box indicating what age group and gender the box has been prepared for;
Place suitable items in the box (details of suitable items can be found in the leaflet);
Place a donation towards covering transport costs in the box;
Bring you box/boxes along to the either of our United Services during October (14th in Newtowngore, 21st in Ballyconnell);
Pray that the gifts would bring joy to the lives of children who have little understanding of what that means. Please do support this worthy cause.

Appointment of Church Army Officer to Ministry Team

For anyone who has not already heard, it is with much pleasure that I announce the appointment of Captain Richard Beadle, Church Army, to the position of Evangelist in our Group of Parishes with effect 1st January 2008 – this is fantastic news for our Group. Richard is married to Pauline, a qualified midwife, and they have three children, Ruth (5 years) and the twins Alisha and Asher (3 years). Initially this appointment will be for 3 years, subject to review upon conclusion of that initial contract.
Please remember the Beadle family as they prepare to leave their current position in the Shankhill Rd, Belfast, that they would have a good ending, and for them as a family as they contemplate this big move and what represents a huge step of faith that The Lord is in this decision. Please also pray for the folk who will be preparing their new home for them, that all would go smoothly.
And pray for Geoff as he continues to communicate a vision of one Group with a leadership team serving that Group.

Richard Beadle

Parenting Course

Having attended a conference recently, it became apparent to me that our Church needs to support and equip or parents in whatever way we can. Many would say that it has never been more difficult to be a parent, either of young children of teenagers. Much of this support would have taken place at the School Gate in years gone by, but now many of us are too busy to get out of our cars to talk to one another, rushing off to the do the next task in an increasingly busy world. We need to help our parents to address this malaise.
Commencing 23rd Oct 2007, our Group will be hosting a parenting course for the whole community in Ballyconnell Minor Hall. The course will be under the auspices of the MU, facilitated by Ann Howard, but is absolutely open to non-members and indeed people who are not members of the Church of Ireland – we simply want to help parents to deal with the challenges they face today.
By coming along you will not be admitting that you are a bad/inadequate parent but rather that you take parenting seriously and want to learn from others who perhaps have experience of a situation which might help you in dealing with something you are facing today. Throughout the course the following guidelines will be adhered to;
No one will be asked to disclose any problems they are currently facing;
No one will be told that they are a bad parent;
No one will be asked to contribute to discussion if they are not comfortable doing so;
Good practice will be affirmed;
The course runs over 4 weeks (23rd Oct, 30th Oct, 6th Nov & 13th Nov all at 8pm) and there is no charge for it though people would be encouraged to make a voluntary donation towards the travel expenses of the facilitator.
If you are interested in attending then please let Geoff know as we need at least 5-6 people to make it worthwhile. If you intend to come, then bring your friend/neighbour along as well.

75th Anniversary Service for St Paul’s, Kinawley

The 9th of September was a very special afternoon for the folk of Swanlinbar as they celebrated the 75th Anniversary of the St Paul’s Chapel of Ease, Kinawley. The Church was literally packed to overflowing on what was a beautiful afternoon. People came from far and wide to recall and celebrate a Christian witness in what were on occasions the toughest of times. There were poignant reminders during our service of just how difficult times were with the dedication of gifts in memory of two members murdered by terrorists as well as gifts in memory of loved ones. Bishop Ken spoke sensitively about the issue of suffering and gave us some pointers when considering how we might make some sense of the difficult question “Why do bad things happen to good people?” He suggested some words from a Graham Kendrick song which are a comfort to him and others when reflecting on such times “For this, you have Jesus”. And he challenged us to continue the mission in the coming years and once again, “For this, you have Jesus”.
Thank you to everyone who made the day so special, to those who provided a lovely tea following the service and to everyone who worked so hard in preparing for the day.

Update on work in Churches Hammer

Both St Peter’s and Tomregan Parish Churches have commenced the major works of replacing the wooden flooring in their respective Church buildings. At the moment the work is more advanced in Templeport but both Churches should be ready for the Harvest celebrations (pews may not be in place, but the floors should be completed (DV)). This has been a complicated process with a number of difficulties arising at various stages, but I would like to thank the Vestry members of both Churches for their commitment to the task and their focus in seeing through these matters. Thanks are also due to the workers who have given of their time so generously in order that the Churches might be prepared for the contractors arrival. Thank you too to you the parishioners for your patience and support throughout this work.

Corrawallen sponsored walk

On the subject of work and thanks, a huge thank you is due to the folk of the Corrawallen community who supported so generously the sponsored walk on Sunday 26th August. All the walkers are included in our photo, some having just completed it, but the majority just before commencing. To date the total sponsorship amounts to €10,000, which is a fantastic amount for a small community. Well done to everyone who took part and thanks especially to the providers of refreshments , both en-route and at Matilda’s home at the end of the walk. All of the proceeds will go towards the cost of the recent refurbishments to the Parish Church.

Christianity Explored

So far, 11 people have indicated their intention to come along to Christianity Explored, which is most encouraging. It is still far from being too late to let me know if you would like to come along – indeed, it is not essential that you do so, just turn up on the night if you wish. The course commences on Wednesday 19th September at 8.30pm in the Minor Hall, Ballyconnell. I promise anyone who comes along that they will not be asked to say, pray, or do anything that they are not comfortable with – it will be entirely up to the individual how much or how little they contribute each evening. If you aren’t able to be make it to every evening that is also fine and should not be seen as a reason for not coming, although it has to be said that the more you can commit to, the more you will get out of it. The course content and times are shown in the table.

Bereavements

Our sympathies are extended to the Rea family, formerly of Kildallon Parish, in the loss of their brother Willy, of Kildallon House. Willy passed away peacefully in St Christopher’s Hospice following a relatively short illness. The committal was in Kildallon grave yard following a service in the Parish Church.

We all feel for Kelly Richardson of Newtowngore Parish in the loss of her grand father in Edinburgh. Kelly’s father died when she was a young child and her grand father was more like a father to her.

William Ross of Umera slipped away peacefully in the early hours of Wednesday morning past, following a very short illness. William was a quiet bachelor who was deeply respected in the community for his humility.
Loss is often difficult to come to terms with but we pray that all those grieving the loss of loved ones would know our support and the comfort of God’s Holy Spirit in the days ahead.

Training evening for people working with children & young people

Safe guarding trust is something which the Church of Ireland has been committed to for a good number of years now. In doing so we ensure that the organisations which meet on Parish premises or Parish groups which go on visits/trips are providing the highest level of care for our children and young people. We remain totally committed to the provision of a safe environment and the care of the young people, children and adults at risk in our organisations. In pursuance of good practice, The Panel, consisting of Miss Beatrice Crawford (Kinawley), Mrs Norma Richardson (Newtowngore), Mrs Linda Lovett (Templeport) and Mr Kenneth Magee (Kildallon), together with Geoff, have carried out a complete and comprehensive review of procedures and policies in place in organisations and on our premises. The outcome of this review is that a number of matters have been updated and it is intended to brief all adults involved in work with our young people, children and adults at risk at a training evening to be held in Ballyconnell Minor Hall on Tuesday 4th September at 8.30pm. The purpose of this review has been to ensure that we are caring for all those in our care as well as those who are responsible for their care. This meeting is extremely important and records of attendance will be kept, so please make a special effort to come along if you are a leader in an organisation working with any of the foregoing groups. If for any reason you are unable to attend, then please let Geoff know in advance.

Outgoing Answering Machine Messages (2)

"Hi. This is John: If you are the phone company, I already sent the money. If you are my parents, please send money. If you are my financial aid institution, you didn't lend me enough money. If you are my friends, you owe me money. If you are a female, don't worry, I have plenty of money."

"Hi, I'm not home now but my answering machine is, so you can talk to it instead. Wait for the beep."

"Hello. I am David's answering machine. What are you?"

"Hi! Kathy's answering machine is broken. This is her refrigerator. Please speak very slowly, and I'll stick your message to myself with one of these magnets."

Wednesday: For Christianity Explored - for Geoff & Abraham and all who come along each week, that it would be a real time of growth and blessing;
Thursday: For those who feel unloved for whatever reason - that we as a Group would be able to minister in power with the lavish love of God so that their hearts might warm towards Him;
Friday: For our Youth Fellowship, especially Avril, Gwenda & Isla - that young people would look to them as good role models and grow in their relationship with God;
Saturday: For Richard, Pauline and the children - pray that God would straighten out the bumps and bends which might present themselves as they prepare to minister in our midst;
