Church of Ireland  Cross

And one king shall be king over them all, and they shall be no longer two nations, and no longer divided into two kingdoms. (Ezekiel 37: 22b English Standard Version)

At different times in my life, on countless occasions indeed, I have just known that something is right. One such occasion was when I married my wife Naomi; another when I gave my life to Jesus; yet another when I felt God calling me into His full-time service through ordained ministry. And I have to say that when I first heard it mooted that Swanlinbar Group of Parishes and Kildallon Group of Parishes were, amongst other proposals as part of a Diocesan Review, being considered for amalgamation, I just knew that it was right.
Since that time I have genuinely been excited at the way in which things have moved forward, apparently slowly at times, but on reflection, for good reason. I have been excited about all the new possibilities for us in our church family as I have contemplated the many ways in which we can build the kingdom through this amalgamation. Of course I have had times when I have been bitterly, bitterly disappointed – the failure to appoint a curate-assistant to serve in our Group of Parishes is one obvious disappointment and I would be glossing over a natural human reaction if I did not make mention of that. But in the midst of disappointment, God has broken in again and again to confirm to me that this is part of His plan for His Church in this part of His Kingdom. I want to share one occasion when God really did speak to me in this way.
Those Vestry members who were able to make it to our planning meeting for my service of Institution will recall that one of the set readings for that day, Monday 30th April 2007, was Ezekiel 37: 15-28. You may well say, “So what!!” But when we examine this passage and its immediate context it helps us to understand how God is speaking to us through His Word and saying “This is good!
The prophet Ezekiel was exercising a ministry at a time when Israel and Judah had been separate nations with separate leadership for 350 years. Not since the rule of King Solomon had the nations been united under one king – but the sovereign Lord said that this was to change. No longer were the two to see themselves as separate nations – rather, they should conceive of themselves as one people, united under one King. The kingship spoken of is not an earthly kingship but rather a messianic rule over all the earth – Jesus, the King of kings and Lord of lords.

The Kingdoms of Israel & Judah
The New Grouped Parishes

I was blown away by the way in which this passage “cropped up” on the 30th of April, the first united vestry meeting of our newly amalgamated Group of Parishes. It tells me many things about how we should conceive of ourselves, our Parish, our Group.
Firstly, the prophet is saying something about identity. Identity is important to all of us. We have a name by which we are known, possibly even a passport or driver’s licence which are means of identification. Our identity is something which is asked for in many situations, for example if travelling with an airline, opening a bank account etc – identity is important. Ezekiel understood the importance of identity to the people, and he understood that their primary source of identity was with the nation. But the prophet was challenging that source of identity and saying that there would be a new leader of both nations and a new identity through the shepherd of the flock, that is the King of kings, Jesus. There is no doubt that we identify very closely with our Parish and our Group, and that is only right and proper. But if our identity begins and ends with a church building and does not see us a belonging to a world-wide family of believers who trust in Jesus then we will not be known to Jesus. It is crucial that we understand this fundamental truth that our identity must be in Christ Jesus. As a newly amalgamated Group of Parishes, we will be doing many things in the coming months which will challenge our traditional understanding of identity. But as we do so, we will not be taking away from the importance of the Parish Church in our lives, but rather understanding that we are part of a much larger family and that the wider family can bless us and we can be a blessing to them.
Secondly, the prophet is saying something about leadership. Leadership is something which is important in any area of life, whether it means a parent exercising leadership in the home or a Prime Minister leading a country! Leadership in God’s church is no less important. The northern and southern kingdoms had experienced a whole range of leaders since the last king of the united kingdoms – some of these kings were good, but in the main they were not, indeed some are recorded as “doing what was evil in the sight of the Lord.” The nations suffered because the leadership which was being exercised was not under the authority of God. Ezekiel prophesied that the nations would be united under one king “My servant David will be their king and they will have only one shepherd” (Eze 37: 28a). Jesus must be the one who leads in our church and Jesus must be the one we all follow. We need leaders in our church who follow Jesus faithfully, leaders who follow where he leads. We need leaders who learn from Jesus style of leadership and in turn lead like Jesus. We need these kind of leaders in our church so that more and more people might know what it means to be led by Jesus through trusting in Him. We don’t need pop star, celebrity leadership, but we do need Christ-like servant-hood leadership so that God’s kingdom might grow.
Our leadership team at present will be comprised of Geoff, George Browne, George Taylor & Hazel Hicks – the ongoing commitment remains to grow this team, not least through the appointment of a full-time member of staff who will live in Kildallon Rectory. In the meantime, we remain committed to delivering a whole range of Sunday Services, pastoral care and other ministries in the knowledge that we are known by Jesus through faith and have Him as our ultimate leader.

Sunday School Prize Giving and Group BBQ

Make a note in your diary, put your umbrella out of sight and get your sun cream ready!! The 4th Sunday in June will be our Sunday School Prize giving service for 2007. The service will held in the Parish Church Swanlinbar at 2.30pm and then followed by a Group BBQ and fun day for our children, including a bouncy castle.
I appreciate that this will mean a considerable amount of travelling for many people, but it is not without good reason.
Last year, the Swanlinbar Group of Parishes spent a considerable amount of money in relaying the Rectory lawns in Swanlinbar. Naomi and I would now like to take this opportunity of opening our home up to the whole Group by way of saying thank you and letting people know that the Rectory is open to them – not a closed shop!! We very much appreciate all that is done for us and simply want to use our home to bless people who are a blessing to us. This will also be an ideal opportunity for us to get to know folk from the Kildallon part of the new grouping in an informal atmosphere. It will also enable folk from both parts of the group to meet with one another for what may be the first time. I would intend that this would become an annual event with the venue moving to Kildallon Parish Church and Rectory next year. There will be no charge whatsoever for this as our Forward steering group have spent wisely and are in a position to subsidise this particular venture. Please do make a big effort to travel the extra distance – if you are from the Kildallon end of our grouping, you won’t have as far to travel next year!
This will be the only service in our new grouping of parishes that day.

The New Group

The Grouped Parishes of Corrawallen, Kildallon, Newtowngore, Swanlinbar, Templeport, Tomregan, do not have a name, as such, at the moment but we would welcome suggestions for a group name which each Parish in the new grouping will be able to relate to - that should be easy!! The plan is that all submissions will be presented to an independent panel who will decide which name best suits our new grouping given all factors. Please let Geoff have your submissions as soon as possible.

Monthly United Service

I understand that the pattern in Kildallon Group has been to have a united service on the 5th Sunday of the month. I am proposing that we now come together on a monthly basis at 1100 for a big family celebration followed by a cup of tea and plain biscuit. The service itself will be based on a Service of The Word with a blend of contemporary and traditional music to cater for all tastes – I need your help to make this happen though!! If you have an interest in music or drama or would be willing to read a lesson at this service, then I would love to hear from you. I specifically need people who can play instruments and sing (not necessarily at the same time!!) to lead our worship. This service can be a real blessing to our church family, but only if we participate in it – worship was never intended to be a spectator sport. So come out of the pews and give me a call so that we can move forward together. The first such service in the Kildallon part of our Group will be on Sunday 8th of July at 1100 in Newtowngore.

Student placement within Parish Grouping

I am very pleased to be able to tell you that we will have a 2nd year student from Oakhill Theological College with us for part of his training commencing Sunday 3rd June. The student’s name is Andy Clark, son of the new Rector of the Belturbet Group of Parishes, Steve Clark. Andy is married to Kirsty and they have one little girl, Emma. Andy will be shadowing Geoff for his two week placement, asking lots of questions, and hopefully getting lots of answers. Please make Andy and the family most welcome when you meet them and give him every support and encouragement you can.

Re-painting of Corrawallen Parish Church

The re-painting of the Church has commenced sooner than we expected which means that with immediate effect there will be no services conducted there until further notice – all services will now take place in Newtowngore. We hope to have normal services resumed within a couple of weeks in time for Sunday 10th June.

Proposed service pattern for our New Parish Grouping

I think that most people would accept that it is inevitable that there will be changes in many ways as we move into this new era in the experience of our various Parishes. One of the areas that I am very conscious of requiring delicate handling, is the provision of Sunday services. In formulating a worship pattern which values the traditions and yet seeks to move Forward with the times I had at the front of my mind a number of important factors, namely;
There is no guarantee that the second full-time member of staff to be appointed will be an ordained minister – we have given very serious consideration to, and will continue to explore, the appointment of a Church Army Officer. Church Army Officers are not permitted to preside at Holy Communion, Baptise or pronounce God’s absolution / blessing. At present we are very fortunate to have the ongoing services of Revd George Browne on our leadership team - George is able to provide all these services. I have constructed a pattern of services which is sustainable with one Minister and a team of Lay/Parish Readers given the foregoing;
We need to do more things together and get to know the wider family better – introduction of a monthly united service in each part of our Parish Grouping (I will say more about this service in another part of the Newsletter);
We need to make use of the whole range of services available to us in our Prayer Book (use of modern language Holy Communion and Morning Prayer services to be phased in where not already in use).

With all of the foregoing, I have produced a template for a standard month with 4 Sundays.

I would welcome your constructive comments, but please do understand that I am seeking to manage change for a whole group of parishes with the best interests of each one at heart.

40 years of faithful service marked by presentation

Our photograph shows Geoff along with Stanley Moffitt displaying a gift from the people of the Parish of Swanlinbar, upon the occasion of his retirement from the position of Honorary Secretary of the Select Vestry for the Parish. Stanley had held office for over 40 years, served under too many Rectors to recall and probably worn out a good number of pens in doing so!!
I would like to thank Stanley for his lengthy and faithful commitment to the office and to wish him a happy retirement – Stanley will not disappear from Vestry life altogether as he was re-elected to our newly elected Select Vestry.

Bereavements

Our Group of Parishes has been touched significantly by loss since our last Newsletter. Clive and Leeanne Gould lost their little baby Amy Elizabeth. Marie Howden of Brackley, Templeport has lost both her mother and father within the space of a couple of weeks, both very suddenly. Cyril Foster’s mother Florrie, slipped away peacefully following a short illness; Cyril’s aunt, Isobell Kirby died in her 101st year in Florida and Evelyn’s cousin Ralph Eccleston of Derrylane Parish, died aged 43.

Loss is never easy to come to terms with, no matter what age the person is, or how much time the family has to prepare. But the darkness of loss does turn to light as days go by, but that takes time and it needs us to be there for those affected in the midst of their grief. May we all be a blessing to those affected by loss and may they each know the comforting hand of the Lord upon their lives at this time.
